Hello and good morning to all. I’m buying a 2007 Essex 24 Valor with a 525 Merc and racing drive. Boat has 320 hours on it and has been stored indoors its whole life. The boat has tons of options on it and is in MINT CONDITION. The trailer is also mint. Not sure if the top end has been done but over 1/2 the hours are at idle. I’m paying in the $50K for the boat. Give me your opinion. Boat also had an extensive maintenance file.

Thanks Ron

Sounds good hopefully it was taken care of. When I bought mine back in 06 the owner had all receipts and his garage was emaculate. I had 14 years of trouble free boating other than water pump and batteries and starter typical wear parts.

Seems like a solid buy assuming it is mechanically good to go. From an ROI standpoint in 2 years it will be a 20 year old boat with 400 hours on it, not the end of the world. If it isn't an odd color or overly tribal flamed it would be a plus, but not a deal killer IMO.

The 525s are great motors and last a while if taken care of. Having the maintenance file is great piece of mind as well. I got a file with everything ever done to mine and it’s awesome to have. Essex makes a good boat and if it’s as immaculate as it sounds, it seems like a good buy.

But I’d agree we need pics!

My biggest concern would be the life span of the 525. I believe there is info on here regarding the standard recommended valve train and total rebuild hours, which of course aren't life or death numbers, but they are published for a reason. Has the owner given you any info on where the valve train was gone through already?

Oh I been waiting for this.

You could have bought it for 40k before a flipper bought it. 20k savings of what its now listed for.

Pedro from Saleen owned it. He said some guy told him it was for his son. Anyways, not the story. I was set to buy the boat. But I was not close enough I guess.

The current owner is a flipper. With no history.

How do you know it’s a flipper with no pics? If it’s listed by epic Bernie does a ton of consignment which he did for me. So maybe current owner is listing it through Bernie. Reguardless Bernie stands behind his deals he’s a straight up dude and there is a reason he is one of the bigger consignment dealers in havasu

Why do you seem so upset about it? Sounds like you didn't offer enough and other guy did. Once the $ is exchanged, it is now his to do with what he wants. If he seen more value in it then what he paid and the seller was happy then it sound like a smart move to me🤷‍♂️ and sounds like you low balled it.

If that is the boat, it appears to show as new. Very clean. Maybe you can reach out or give the OP the info from the guy you were trying to buy it through so he can get the back story on the engine maintenance. It appears the year and engine numbers don't match which could just be the OP trying to keep his find a little secret... lol... hard to do on this site with all the background knowledge.

If it hasn’t had the top end done, it’s going to soon. It’s a great motor with tons of room for mods later.

Ballpark, what's a top end refresh cost on a 525?

Another thing to check for is on a 525 you are supposed to check and replace the oil in the fuel pump housing on a rather frequent basis.

Its Pedro from Saleen Fiberglass. He owned it and sold it.

They should have just done the top end when the motor was out recently to do the engine bay work and sea deck.

From what I know about the 525, you may want to redo the top-end. $5000 seems like insurance to avoid the whole engine getting bombed. sorry

Sounds like a good boat with the right power. Sux to hear about the flipper but its just a dynamic of the market... there are flippers in houses, golf carts, cars, and motorcycles... its unfortunate but something that needs to be considered when shopping. The last two boats I bought were on the market less than a week. Good deals are gone quick so when you see something that is a competitively priced for the market you jump on it, don't spend a lot of time going back and forth on price or it will be gone.

Not sure why so many people dislike flippers, if you support a capitalist society than then their actions are completely justified. The market will speak for itself whether the flipper will make a profit or lose, It is their gamble.

It’s one thing to be an honest flipper, it’s another thing to lie to the original seller so you can flip…

My reply was not for their personal character but rather than the process of being a flipper. The character is to be judged by the buyer which will ultimately effect the flippers possible profit.

Yeah a couple well known flippers. I know one picked up from OG owner 115k lied to the guy then listed for 149k. Has another also picked up for 55k listed at 79k now. Cool you want to make a little money, but don't lie to the seller, and don't overprice the shit out of it when you flip it without doing any major work/mods to justify it.

I see both sides but if the flipper knows the real value and can get it why not. If you were to sell your vehicle would you let it go for what it’s worth or lower than its value cause you don’t know the true worth of it?

This 100%. Don't be a scumbag and say that the boat is for your Son and its PERFECT for him and you are so happy to be able to pass it down. 3x I have heard that now in this market.

If Arizona had brokerage laws on boats like 90% everywhere else, this wouldn't be an issue. But not the case, these Instagram Sellers just keep doing what they are doing.

Definitely a scumbag move, and it happens with cars and homes too.

These scumbags come up with awesome stories that make the sellers feel like their item is getting sold to someone who will love and take care of it, and most of the time give them a great deal because of it.

Then a short time later it’s posted for way more than it was sold for.

Honesty is a rare commodity these days…

Dear lord…. Dude comes here asking about a boat and it turns into a bash session. This is also why I have passed on the last few good deals here because I get sick of the crucifix that comes when I go to sell.
So true. There is an item here for sale right now that I would like to buy because I think I could flip it. But good lord imagine the hate I would get.

This bullshit about sellers selling for less because the flipper lied about it going to a good home is the most bullshit thing I have ever heard. I give 2 shits what you do with it after I get my money and that’s how it goes.

I almost didn't start my "restoration thread" cause I'm sure there will be individuals that come along asking why certain things were done or "next time you can do it better if you do it this way" comments. To each there own. RDP isn't any different then any other social media site...

And that’s you lol. I’ve personally bought two cars at smoking deals way under asking because the sellers liked my story. I could have turned around and flipped them for market value but I’m not a dick. I also was able to secure my last rental because of a “sweetheart” letter I wrote, which the owner specifically said that’s why he chose us.

Unfortunately, because of flippers writing fake “sweetheart” letters home seller are now starting to not accept them.

As far as the boat in question goes, I think the OP got a lot of info that will allow him to put an offer in he thinks is fair. It’s a nice boat with a great engine package.
