A few years ago I had an opportunity to buy a barn find schiada, and I made sure to not let this one pass on by...

The way the story goes is that in 2020 I had caught wind of an all original 21RC that was tucked away in a warehouse for 30 years. The owner was the original owner and had every stitch of paperwork right down to the original order sheet, a copy of the original bank loan pay off sheet and every piece of paper that involved the boat.

Well, 2020 the owner and I just couldnt meet on a price he was still very emotionally attached to the boat because his wife was the one who ordered the boat from schiada in 1974 and she went with some weird options, small block 350, mercruiser TRS drive with left hand rotation, and an interior configuration that is basically 6 jump seats with a modified passenger lounge.

Let's fast forward to October of 2023, I decided to call the owner and see if he was ready to let the boat go. I showed up to the warehouse with cash and ended spending hours listening to stories about that boat and the time it spent on lake mead. I have to say it was a little tear jerking seeing the owner get so emotional watching the boat get hooked up to the truck.

Right after I bought the he boat i contacted spindler to see if I could get more information on the boat. I found out that this boat is actually the oldest 21 RC around with a vin tag of 002 and was delivered in May of 1975. Hull number 1 from the mold ended up catching fire on mead in the 80s and boat #3 actually lives in parker.

Today is the day, I decided for my birthday this year im going to bring the boat back to her former glory. I turn 39 today and I have always had a love for schiadas since I first saw them at the LA boatshow when I was around 8 years old. My wheels came in last week, and I drove out to my parents house and threw them on and repacked the wheel bearings, I'll pull her back to havasu Tuesday to officially start the boats restoration.

I love this. That particular set up is an ideal boat for Havasu on calmer days!!

It's a beautiful boat. Possible it's "oddity" of the outdrive setup and interior are what make it so special. No changes made through it's life. The previous owner may have raised his kids with it, and now a new family has it's turn. It'll be young again.

Exactly...

It only makes 300hp will all 8 cylinders set on kill, it's not a v drive, and the colors are something off an forienger sound track...

But the history and the fact that it was the first stern drive to roll out of schiada and that it is the oldest 21RC with all the paperwork make it that much cooler in my mind

On a side note, I contacted thr original owner who now lives in Utah and he is going to send me some pictures of the boat from back in the 70s.

He also told me that at one point he had thought about putting his wife's ashes in the boat and intentionally sinking it on Powell that way the boat and it's true owner could all rest in peace, (im glad he decided against that idea!!)

Either, way I promised to name the boat Darla and have her name put in gold leaf on the transom when it's done to pay respects to Darla.

... and I did promise to have mark there in the boat with me on it's maiden voyage after restoration

What all needs to be done to it? Pics look like it’s in in pretty fair shape as is.

Mainly cosmetic, I am going pull the tanks and have them boiled. The fuel system needs a refresh

Awesome find and a great story with the history of the boat, naming the boat, and restoring it. BTW if that’s your Chevy dually towing it out of the barn, that thing is sweet . Good luck with restoration and if it’s any sign of your dually she’s in good hands .

Thanks, I put that dually together last year. Took me while to find a super low mile lbz duramax.

Besides, lowered duallies and schiadas, that's a combination designed by the river gods themselves!

The vacuum gauge is a curious one...never seen one in a boat before. In applications with wheels, one would eyeball that to keep fuel mileage under control. They spec'd this boat with a small block in 1975, (before I was born) so I imagine the wife was concerned about cost of operation....which is odd...considering they went to Schiada instead of Tahiti...means they weren't broke or cheap, just frugal.....but I bet things were tight, and they scraped together whatever was required to buy the best quality money could buy at the time leaving not much left over. Cool boat that tells a cool story. Enjoy it.

I thinknyour right, the paperwork shows the boat was ordered end of 74 with a purchase price of $5800. I bank i Fullerton carried the note until October of 78 when the boat was paid off

‘74 was the gas crunch so the small block makes sense. Nice boat!
