I’m at another event with Scott Pruett. While you and me get to deal with endless waiting lists, Rolex Ambassadors get custom engraved watches hand delivered and presented by the president of Rolex…this one celebrating his 50 years of racing 😍

I went to my local AD to get the Speedy sized, and got talking about the Cartier Santos, they only carry the Cartier line at the Mission Viejo store, but that store manager was coming up to Brea on Thursday, and they offered to have her bring some up for me to look at. I went back on Thursday to look at them, I am very pleased, probably a future purchase, but that store manager wore her Santos as well that day considering our appointment, trying to sway me of course.

Apparently the Rolex manager of the market/region came into the store while we were there, and she was embarrassed to not be wearing her Rolex and told me so. I said it just loud enough, "just tell him that you have been on the waiting list for 3 years and decided to do business with someone that wants you as a customer" :). I am sure it didn't help my cause, but I will try the nuclear option when presented the chance.

Santos Large is a super cool piece, easy change integrated bracelet, under 10mm thick case, most comfortable watch I have ever worn, and easy link changes as well, not tools required. I think on the black strap, it could do double duty as my dress watch.

I’m a fan of the Cartier watch line. They have some cool shit and it’s close to my heart as I bought my then fiance a replica happy sport with floating diamonds when we were super young and broke. It’s long gone, probably broke after a year lol.

Now I’m shopping for a real one to surprise her. Sweet watches.

The engravement might make it tougher to trade up for an Omega.

No, close, Swiss Watch Gallery in the mall, jewelers touch does have in house watchmakers for servicing, but I don't know if they are an AD to sell anything new, they might have some used inventory. Their website is now help, pages not found for watches they carry. Definitely not Rolex, you are either Rowland Heights, where you can imagine a certain clientele is getting preferential treatment, Swiss Watch Gallery, South Coast with literally zero chance, and then Hyde Park jewelers in Fashion Island, same thing.

Ruh Roh . . . . .

Makes perfect sense. EVERYTHING seems to be made in or partially made in China. I can say, the SUPER high end replicas are very difficult to tell apart with the naked eye. But they're also still pretty rare and still cost a lot of money (for a fake, or should I say, according to the video above, just not blessed by the authorized manufacturer). The basic replicas that run 200-1k you can tell pretty easily if you know what you're looking at. and when you get them in your hand you can really tell pretty quickly. Buddy used to do business in China a lot and would bring back counterfeit watches all the time. And I've seen some on this thread even. I've also found the statement, "if you question if it's real, its not" to be true. When you see a real high-end watch, there's no second guessing it's validity.

But to the point of this video....It's the same shit with "made in America" stuff. Every American made vehicle uses parts from China. Really anything that is complex has parts made in China.

Definitely. Super clones at the 1k price range are challenging to tell from photos, but luckily we have so many other senses. How different movements feel when you wind them is almost like a totem from Inception, they just don't "feel" right :). Same with the particular look of Rolex Stainless steel, Omega's use of co-axial escapements, different quality of lumes, you know without knowing how you know. Stupid hobby :) Machining and polishing are still the most indicative though.

I still don't understand a grown up ever wearing a clone, to me it would be like putting a 500 cowl on an outboard that is not, or DCB stickers on another cat, etc. I would be a lot prouder wearing a decent hamilton than a fake rolex. Homage's are a different conversation. Fair play if you want to, but, its a big world out there watch wise, plenty of cool stories on their own at each price point.

Watch collections are personal achievements for me, because no one in their right mind Should pay the money we do for these timepieces when one watch would suffice. That being said I would feel like a fraud if I were to own a clone, which would say much about the person owning one.

My thing is, if you like the look of a Rolex but can't afford one and want a counterfeit, that's cool, whatever, you do you. I totally get your opinion and agree but also, I'm kind've indifferent to it. Doesn't affect me either way. But true watch people will know it's not real. Don't fuckin' kid yourself. And don't try to pass it off as real when it's not. THAT to me is lame. and like you pointed out. You know. And if you're questioning it, it aint real. It is super weird how you just know. Your'e right, the polish on the stainless is nicer, the ceramic is nicer, the crystal is nicer. True Rolex's just POP more. Counterfeits are more dull. More time you have with them, the easier it is to see just by looking at one from a couple feet away (or in a photo).

yep, like buying a gold olympic medal for something you never won. My degree is from UCI, I am proud of that, why hang a diploma that's fake from Harvard?

I would actually tolerate clones more decades ago, as everyone "needed" a watch, lets go before the quartz crisis. So you had to have something on the wrist that everyone was wearing, and you wanted to fit in.

Nowadays, hardly anyone wears watches, let alone us idiots that pay more than 400 bucks for one. "No one would notice you NOT wearing one" I guess is my point, so a fake is just a straight unsupported flex. Again, its an incredibly silly use of money, so I guess that's why we can't take anything more ridiculous coming into play :)

So, I thought of this post. My 12 year old was in the car and said out of the blue. “Dad, I want a nice watch for my birthday (it’s in Sept) to wear like yours. Not like a Rolex or anything but something silver with the hands.”
So, I’ll Take him to my buddies shop and see what kind of cool / non high end watches he has. The next gen of watch appreciation seed is taking root. 😁👍

I am not sure what his interests are, but Hamilton is in so many movies, and even some video games, its a cool "story" as well to go with them. See what he likes, and if hel likes divers or field watches, there are tons of cool stuff by numerous brands as you know. Happy hunting.

Yeah my buddy has some standard stuff under 150. There’s actually some really nice looking inexpensive watches that I’m guessing will last for the next 250 years. lol.

Just googled watches under $150. Some cool stuff. I think I like the nicer swatch watch stuff just for nostalgia reasons. I lived through the years of people wearing 6 swatch watches on their arms and shit in the 80’s. lol

Cool stuff though.

Son preppy?

The most preppy watch you could wear -by far- is the classic Timex.

Many would point to the Timex Weekender as the one to get.

Inexpensive, can collect straps.

Or Seiko x Rowing Blazers if looking for a bracelet:

Mmmm not so preppie I think. But those are all good looking watches.

I’ll let him decide. 🤷🏻‍♂️

casio duro is an awesome 3 hander for under $150, Seikos definitely on the list. That Gshock 2100 is $100 in resin, you can get in steel case, like mine, for $150. Timex, citizen, bulova, all have cool stuff. Bulova has tons of American history, and the devil diver, more expensive is the best looking orange watch out there.

Macy's will probably have some steep memorial day sales coming up, you might see 25-50% off watch brands like this as well.
