I’m not sure if anything has changed much from when I was in, but we’d lose 2 to 3 aircraft each deployment. My second one in 94’ we lost 3. An F14 ramp strike at night, an F18 I launched went in due to an accident, and an helo SH-60 was lost due to an accident to. No one killed thank god. All accidents or equipment/machinery failures. Lots of stuff can go wrong in a hurry on a flight deck. I’m thinking the media is making a big deal out of what normally happens.

Seems like the epitome of organized chaos. I think I've read the deck is near 11 acres? Jets and helicopters talking off and landing, heavy equipment, weaponry and a lot of manpower. A whole lot can happen real quick.

You mentioning the equipment losses, and now being broadcast, could be the media again. "See, we need transgender admirals" kind of BS.

Yep. The most recent loss was caused by an arresting gear failure. That system undergoes frequent and systematic maintenance checks, so I imagine the failure was due to an unexpected condition.

Considering the repeated extreme stresses on the gear, a failure probably isn't a complete surprise.

Somewhere in the archives of RDP, there was a pic of one of the hook deals that catch the wire. I think it was used as a door stop or something. The inmate said they would get changed out periodically, as they would wear down from use. Just odd to think about something so strong, being a consumable in some respects.

I believe it's 4 and a half acres of US sovereign territory. 🇺🇸

Found it

Something else kind of interesting for some of you maybe. As a troubleshooter on F-18s I was tasked with changing tail hooks when they wore out. Normally we just chuck them overboard because they were no good anymore. But I did manage to save a few. This one’s a doorstop at my house. Scratch marks on the bottom are from the flight deck of the Kitty Hawk.

I feel bad when an empty beer can blows off my pontoon boat.
