Meant to post this yesterday.
May 2nd is always a mixed emotions day for me.
It marks the day that I lost my second Dad(my dad passed in 1977 as a CHP after complications from a roadside encounter) Dick Waldrip 17 years ago.
He was my mentor and racing partner for 25 years and have known him since I was 10.
A nicer man you will never meet.
I miss him every day.

Then on the other hand there’s Dick VanBeenan.
Known him since I was about 10 as well.
He’s owned 22 different VDrives , circle raced and was the 30th original member of the NDBA.
He has just turned 85 yesterday and is still charging hard.
He’ll be up in Carlsbad with me today for some bench racing, lunch and a few cocktails.
I’ve been a lucky guy to have these two men in my life!👍

Thanks for sharing these very private memories and honoring your dads. Both contributed their love, knowledge, and wisdom to your life, which helped mold the talented and productive man you became.

Yesterday was a bittersweet day for me as well. It was the 72nd anniversary of the day my Mom and Dad married. They had a special love for each other that was apparent until the day my Mom passed in 2011, and for the rest of Dad's life, he had a emptiness that couldn't be resolved. Dad joined her eight weeks ago, on March 9th. Now they're reunited in the love of Jesus they shared, and that thought is a comfort I'll carry for the rest of my life.

It an interesting story.
The boat is CeeBee Marine flatbottom rigged in 1970 with all CB marine running gear.
It sat in storage for years and the family that inherited it took it to a couple boat shops to get it running.
Everything was original and in great shape.
So after Carburetor/Distributor rebuild along with fresh fuel, fuel pump, wires, impeller and fresh oil it was ready to run.
Both shops could get it to pop and bang but never idle.
Friend of the owners asked if he could bring it down and if I could figure out what was wrong.
Got here on a Saturday about 10am.
We had the same issue.
Checked wires, fuel, everything I could think of still wouldn’t run.
So a half hour or so in, on another attempt, I looked down at the dampener and it was turning backwards!
It had a reverse cam in it!
I reversed the wires and she fired right up.
Had it running in an hour.
We ended up buying the boat and used it at the river for a year and sold it.
She was a sweetheart.
I know a few people have tried a reverse cam in a circle boat(makes sense to drive off the flywheel end instead of the snout) but it just never has caught on.

Gone about as far as I can go on the Long Deck.
Waiting on a V Drive shaft from JJ Beaver.
Got three straight weeks on the road so hopefully by the time I get back the shaft shows up and I can get going on finishing this thing up!

The owner is a Fire Captain and I came up with the name…Five Alarm Fire…that I had my lettering guy draw real quick with a sharpie.
Five Alarm for what he does and then Fire in honor of the LongDeck that changed Circle Boat racing forever…Cold Fire.
The idea will be to a tribute nod to Cold Fire by using the original style cursive font.
Owner liked it…

A few of the B boat purists that noticed the large emblem on the dash will no doubt be offended that I didn’t use the badges that are correct on this boat.
They are tiny little ones barely visible on the gunnel below the Stack Tanks on the OG Cold Fire in the last post(I have 2 matching pairs)
I had this one from a 1962 Biesemeyer and thought it would be cool to mount it in the classic place on the dash.
Hopefully I won’t be banished by the Team B-Boat guys!😂

Lost a great dedicated racer Saturday.
Win Phillips.
He raced Laveys in the 70’s with Paul Grichar engines.
Grich and Win were close friends.
Win owns a ranch just outside Story, Montana.
I was fortunate enough to take a fair number of trips with Grich up there.
It truly was his favorite place in the world.
He told me if he could instead of boat racing, he’d rather spend all his time on the ranch with Win.
I’ll bet Grich had the Lavey prepped and on the ramp when Win got up there!
RIP my friend!

OK, I got to ask...what's with the wood, and the tarp ?
At first I thought it was a display for a car show, but that looks like somebody's garage, or at a warehouse.
Whatever the case, nice looking Boat !

Lower River story : Young Coast Guard crew broke their Spectra Jet so I offered to tow them back to the marina with my flattie. I put it to the wood and got them on a plane, when we made it to the marina they said if they knew we were going to tow at speed they would've put the lights and siren on. They were a great bunch of guys.

Needs a lot more turn buckles. 😎

Great job Dave! Looking good!!!!!!!
I would have liked to have added a couple more in the middle of the boat, but these 3 hole turnbuckle pads are super rare and I had to use them.
Used a lot of the OG parts from 1975.
I searched all my contacts looking for a couple more but no luck.
