I know this isn't political, bare with me. My 15' F150 makes a clunking sound at slow speeds. making me insane. Its dull thump, like a full can of beer was rolling around in the back. You cant feel it as much as hear it. Ive read its a C clip in the rear axle, leaf spring issues, 2 piece drive shaft, etc
Anyone have this issue? 4 door 2wd, no lift. 20k miles eco boost. Im a freak about rattles and noises so this is killing me.

Slow speeds turning?

Is it an "open" differential or limited slip?

Under warrantee still?

My 2011 eco boost f 150 2wd did it sooo bad sometimes coasting from a stop on a slight downhill it would damn near snap your neck. Dealer told me it's normal and can be toned down via computer which they did and seemed to reduce the frequency of it happening. I had it for 4 years and loved it as my run around work truck but just traded it in on a new Chevy 2500. That clunk was one reason I traded it rather than sell private party, but I did get 16,500 on trade with 80 k miles.

not turning so much. More accelerating to about 10 mph. No clue the rear end gears or anything. Limited slip yes, it has the lock out switch, I havent tried that yet to see if it goes away

I know that clunk, my F250 work truck has done that a few times, violent bang into gear

Remove rear driveshaft and grease slip joint with special grease that Ford has ...there's a TSB about it

Beat me to it.

GM has a special grease for this as well. They had the clunk from the slip yoke going into the transmission.

Be persistent and fully expect them to say "within factory specification." I am really struggling with Ford right now over a dual-clutch issue and expected better.

Mine does the same thing. Its really noticeable when going downhill with the cruise control on. Ill try greasing the yoke.

I work at a ford dealership the issue you are referring to really only applies to 2 piece rear driveshafts. It is most noticeable on take offs from a stop. There is a special grease kit with a new clamp for the slip joint boot. If attempted at home make sure to index the shafts to each other as I'm sure people know but they are a balanced unit so if reassembled not clocked properly it will cause you big head aches..

I'm not doing it myself! Drop it off. That is what I've read also.

I have the exact noise you discribe on my 2016 f150, have you found a solution. I’m confident it is the axle play, causing the axle to move in and out slightly just enough to make the clunk noise. Seems like it either needs tighter fitting c clips on the axles or a very thin washer on the axle but the dealer just says it’s a normal noise.

They said it's normal. The drive shaft was pulled apart and greased. But that's not the noise. It's axle play, some slop in there some where. Super annoying to me, my wife can't hear it!

I had the same issue, slip yoke was assembled without grease so it wore the splines out. They replaced my slip yoke under warranty and it fixed the problem. Unfortunately, it is starting to come back and the warranty has since expired.

I’m the exact same way it’s driving me nuts, I read on another forum that someone had the dealer measure their axles and found a discrepancy in the casting causing too much play. I’m sure it’s the axle also I can lift the truck and replicate the noise by pushing and pulling on the rear wheel. I’m headed to another dealer tomorrow to see if they can fix just wanted to see if you ever found a solution.

My 2012 F150 Plat 4x4 EB only clunked on one 110 degree off camber corner I encounter leaving my house. It seemed all dependent on if it felt the speed required a mid-corner shift. Although it did it for 5 years consistently, same corner, same shift, if I altered the speed enough to prevent a shift, it was fine. But it was more than a clunk, it was a fuckin BANG !! Otherwise, I never noticed any gear train clunks.

They say it is the rear leaf springs and they are replacing them, I don’t think this will solve the problem but that’s what they want to start with....

I had the exact noise you described, like a can of beer rolling back and forth in the bed. The dealer replaced the rear leaf springs and all hardware and it completely fixed the noise. I’m under the 36,000 miles so it was covered under warranty. I was sure it was the rear axle but the springs fixed it.
