My daughters '12 Camaro, engine knocks when cold. Been to dealer twice, replaced some injectors, still not fixed. Car is at Dealership again and they put some dye in it, not sure what this test does. Dealer is talking about replacing one of the heads or entire engine depending on what this test shows. There is a bulletin out about this, but seems like they are trying to bandaid the issue. I'm reading stuff on a Camaro forum that it's very difficult to get them to replace entire engine under warranty. Anyone else here having this problem with a 3.6L V6 ?

"show me the exact area where the noise comes from, and what parts are making that noise, along with why it is now making noise". Inspect your torn down engine, take lots of photos and 'expect' a new long block when they can't answer and show you all there answers to your questions. DO NOT fall for "it's carbon on the pistons", and you need to pay us to clean it out. That is a BS diagnosis, and never cures the problem. You DO NOT want a fixed internal part, you want a new long block if the noise comes from inside.

There's a "Customer Satisfaction Recall Program" for that engine.
They know it has issues,, don't let them dick you around.

I had a knocking issue with a 1997 GMC PU. They first tired replacing the crank and bearings. The tech and service advisor showed me how the clearance on the rear main was about .002 loose base upon the plastic gauge not crushing enough and GM only authorized a crank kit. I laughed and told them to call me and let me know what they were going to do when that didn't fix it. The next day they called and said they ordered a new complete engine.

In my case it was piston slap and I knew it the whole time. It sounds like this could be your issue too if it is most pronounced at a given RPM. If it is, new engine, and get a factory rep involved.

All LS based engines (exc the 350) had slap. My 2002 5.3 does it and it's getting worse as the miles roll on. Proven not to cause a failure.

You would think by now GM could sort this out.

The 3.6L V6 isn't LS based, but regarding the LS engine piston slap issue -

Yea, they are noisy. Its mainly the earlier LS based engines Pre 2004. They added teflon coated piston skirts, and altered the injection timing at idle to quiet them down a bit on the later motors. Its a short skirt piston design so they tend to be noisy when cold for the first 30 seconds or so, until the combustion heat expands them.
