Two Boats in the Top Fuel Class.....Damm...:grumble:

The Spirit of Texas headed back to Dallas, the front part of the fiberglass shell held together by eight pieces of black duct tape.

Daryl Ehrlich speeds off the line kicking up a wall of water as officials look on at the 26th Annual Augusta Southern Nationals.
In the top fuel hydro division, Daryl Ehrlich won the crown after Scott Lumbert?s boat flipped.
Tony Brucato, top wins against John O'Hara.

Driver Scott Lumbert trekked back to Illinois kept together by a dose of aspirin. He was left shaken and stirred Sunday after losing control of his 8,000-horsepower boat in the elimination round of the Augusta Southern Nationals.

Lumbert, bidding for his fourth consecutive win this season over rival Daryl Ehrlich and his boat, Problem Child, envisioned the showdown going better than it did. An aggressive play early flipped Lumbert's day -- and his boat -- upside down.

"Today, we were going for the gusto. I had to beat him," said Lumbert, who walked away with soreness to his neck and shoulders along with a bruise to his shin. "We'll be back."

After featuring strong winds and disruptive alligators the first day, the 26th edition of the annual drag boat races saw benign conditions on the final day of competition.

Early in the day, Ehrlich piloted Problem Child to a winning time and speed of 3.905 seconds and 232.702 mph in the top fuel hydro division, the top division in drag boat racing.

"We're happy with our run," said Ehrlich, who lost a blower belt along the way. "I battled a little bit out there."

Ehrlich couldn't see what transpired with his competitor. Lumbert gunned the Spirit of Texas at the start, but the boat dug into the water, lifted into the air and flipped. Lumbert never freaked out.

"If I start to panic, they're going to panic," he said of his rescue crew. "I don't want that to happen."

Both drivers remained as the show ran past 7 p.m. Ehrlich held an exhibition run to close the show, firing his boat down the 1,000-foot course in 3.812 seconds at 234.30 mph.

It was an anticlimactic ending, with Lumbert on the sidelines. Problem Child and Spirit of Texas were the lone top fuel hydro boats in attendance. In fact, they're the only two current boats in their division on the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series.

Ehrlich said the economy has kept some top fuel hydro competitors out of the water, though more teams are expected to join the circuit later this year. Both drivers believe the number of top fuel hydro drivers likely will triple for next year's event.

"You get your peaks and valleys in racing" Lumbert said. "It's on the way back to the peak."
