In the 80's (I think) everybody bought a conversion van. I remember the guy on TV car dealer ads saying just pay list price for the shell of the van (his words) and they would throw the conversion in for free. We didn't have one though.

I'd like to have an old van like that to pull a matching flattie out to Billy B's show

Man you read my mind!! I'd love to pick up a shorty and lower it on Torq Thrust wheels with a matching float. 😍

My wacky neighbor has a 3/4 ton window van which he uses for deliveries. He hasn't taken care of it and it has created a sore spot with my wife. He delivers fruits to homeless shelters and churches using big brown banana boxes....so she has nicknamed him "Bananas." 😁

So, whenever I point out a clean van or bring up the idea 4Waters mentioned, she just looks at me, rolls her eyes and says "OK Bananas." 🤣

I cant win. 😁

Currently in MX, and I'm loving the old VW vans that are still on the road here. Although there's less and less as the years go by.
I'd rock one in Sask (in the summer).

I looked a little closer at your pics & I see why you bought that one.
Other than paint and trim - that's in nice shape. Many miles?

Don't care on the miles. It is really clean body wise. Minimal rust which is a big issue with them.

I had many, "If the van's a rockin', don't come knockin'. The best if you can locate it is the early Dodge 3/4 ton B200 in 127 wheelbase. If not seconf best is the B100, ahlf ton in 127" wheelbase. they had a bit more room in back.

Dodge had the best hands down for a number of reasons, but mainly the driving position. Just climb into the Chevy or Ford, because of the engine location, on many years the driver sat off center to the steering wheel and you feet had a 10" well to lay flat. the Dodge was centered and had a much wider opening for your feet. the best year was 1972/1973, pre smog pump, although they are exempt now. in 1974 they went to a plastic grill, before that an aluminum grill.

I found this very rare 1974; https://losangeles.craigslist.org/ant/cto/d/lancaster-1974-dodge-100-obo/7421637528.html

My buddies. He had one back in high school. View attachment 1078159 View attachment 1078160
Mine was a '72, jet black, painted by Parker's auto body in Santa Ana. Same side pipes, mine were hooked up and Cragar's all around. N50/15 Micky Thompson's on the rear. Interior was more or less with the same with the octagon entrance to the bed. Many, many good times with that van at Crazy Horse at the "Van-Ins". South Coast Vans club.

The side pipes are hooked up to Electric cut outs. Quiet when you want and rumble when you need.

One of my master bmw techs drove his early 70s ford van to work for 30 years. Complete with shag carpet kit and windshield dingleberries.

That 1974 may be a deal, just try to find one that is not butchered or all rusty. Or even locate one at all. Most are 1990's, often house painters use them, the old ones can take a 360 crate engine, no emissions.

They are becoming popular again, And a lot of them are rusted out big time. The 8k is probably a fair price nowdays. The reason I bought this one was the lack of rust. Less engine and trans I paid 3k for it.

I would avoid the early fords. Very difficult to work on, better dodge or Chevy. All the dodges had good rear ends, remember not much of a load, and all had 2bbl carbs, so I would insert a new 5.7 or a fresh 360 crate. Trans is bulletproof 727, these run 300k, just keep them up. I had 3 dodges, never one issue. Also rare to find early ones with in dash factory ac, it was pricey. The Sun roofs, all leaked, so if painting just fill the hole.

I ram as a privateer at Laguna Seca in my early years, all in a 1973 B200 and a fast Kawasaki.

My first real tow vehicle, in November of 1976 ordered a 77’ 3/4 ton short wheel base GMC Van small block 400 with AC, cruise control, boy was I styling. Did my own conversion captain chairs and a fold down in the back. Added a Playcool for those hot nights a the river! That van went all over the country with the Wife and 3 Kids. Kept it until 1989 when it was replaced with a Suburban 3/4 ton 454 shit gas was cheap!

I had a 78 Tradesman that picked up for $900 a few years back. Threw some torque thrusts on it and a few other things and drove it around Prescott for a while. They are super fun and get a ton of odd looks/comments lol.

late 70's early 80's my brother, cousin and a couple friends all had these, looked way cool with all of them pulling flats up to the river, I was just a pup but got to tag along a few times and roll with them before Mom and Dad got there.
