I recently came into possession of a musical fidelity tri vista 300 receiver coupled to a musical fidelity A308 CD player and musical fidelity tri vista 300 power supply. They are hooked to Vandersteen model 5 carbon series speakers. I’ve been told best of the best and the prices I’ve looked up is jaw dropping.

my dilemma is I don’t really have the room for this set up at our house not to mention we live on the beach in a 100 year old house that is “damp”. I was thinking I could put it in the havasu house we’re gonna buy but 1) we may rent it to friends and friends of friends for vacation rental and 2) I don’t think the heat would be good for the speakers and components.

So, I guess my main question is would the heat and dry air in havasu fuck this system up?

Nicely played 2TankFF.
Lol. It’s not for sale.

Already have a good friend that wants to buy it.

I’d rather keep it for a few reasons - I enjoy crisp clean sound, I would never spend this type of money on a stereo (even if I can appreciate the quality) and it’s somewhat sentimental to me as it belonged to my father.

So I really would like some input on if it’s a good idea to have it sit in a house that inner temps could get crazy hot. If it is not a good idea then that would give me some direction on getting it out to my buddy who will care for it as should be.

YEAH!!! now you understand my concern.

My buddy that would like to buy it is really into stereos. Owns an ungodly amount of classic merantz and pioneer stereo units. He said it’s the set up that true audio files dream of owning.

Like I said, I’ll enjoy the shit out of it and actually still have all my CD’s. but conflicted on keeping it in the heat of havasu. 😬

F* that. After I learned how to operate it correctly - I wouldn't let anybody touch it, not even the wife. Or kids until they reach age 40.

And I'm not kidding. :)

Congrats bud :)
LMFAO. that’s classic.

So again, I have a delema. 🤦‍♂️ first world problems I guess.

And thanks.

Do you plan to let it got very hot? We keep our place at 85 during summer. With windows closed and good shutters, our AC bill out there isn’t more than $100 or $200 if we are there for 2 weekends. It seems to help everything inside from drying out like walls, floors, door jams etc. everything seems to go to shit if you let it sit at 100 degrees. A little AC seems worth the money.

^^^ I agree. We set the AC at 85 when we are gone and remotely turn it to 73 when driving out. Electricity is 1/3 the price out there compared to our California house.

Good point. It all new to me! I don’t know about this shit yet!! 😁😁

But yeah I’m just curious if equipment like this will be ok with sustained temps of 85 or so. Or will it mess with the components. I just don’t know. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Decent selection of Bourbon

One chair dead center..

I have a bunch of my old CD's, as well. I was just telling my wife I should dump them as I stream everything now. Are CDs like old vinyl, sentimental, sound quality...I hate dumping them but I never use them?

The humidity, or lack there of, is hard on the surrounds on speakers, and the insulation on wiring. The surrounds would be the most effected I'd think.
Please take care of that equipment! That is some seriously beautiful stuff.

I don’t think we’re there yet with CD’s. I just happen to have put all my CD’s in a rack behind my safe out of site so they’ve been there for 15 years. Otherwise I would have probably pitched them. But now, they may come in handy. This stereo isn’t made for streaming or blue tooth or record or radio for that matter. CD Is what it’s designed to run.

Not sure CDs are the right media for that system
It was built to run CD’s. The cd player is super high quality as well. It does have a selector and you can run other media but th way it sits now, the three components are all it has.

I am lacking on the appropriate amp to drive my speakers.
Bowers & Wilkens 803s. This is a internet pic of what I have. I also have the center channel. Running the 704’s (i think) in the rear.

The vocals of these speakers are top notch. They have awesome bass. But need a bit more for some music.

Running a Nakamichi (sp) amp at the moment.. .damn good for the money… when I say they set the stage… I am not joking… close your eyes and the music gets 3D. Seriously amazing speakers. I will get a decent amp some day.

There is a legit hifi shop in DTLA called common wave hifi, maybe give them a call and see what they say.

And down the rabbit hole you go.

You can stream "lossless" music that is supposed to be the same quality as the Master Tapes used to make CD's.!

I stream Tidal "MQA" thru a DAC that folds/unfolds MQA files.

Careful with that "BT" word around audiophiles...

Why is it hot inside a Havasu house? Unless the power dies maybe.

You can always lock up controls in a cabinet for renters/guests not to be able to access. Speakers.. well you will deal with certain things but you can maintain them. @Shlbyntro can attest to when we swapped out the exterior speakers that they were DONE... (20ish years old at the house they were toast..) But they were fine till about 5 years prior. The interior stuff I added had a long warranty, and even when the house is empty for months we keep the temps pretty normal...using shudders, sunscreens etc. If you intend to let the house bake without keeping it at reasonable temp..id bet the speakers will be the least of your issues.

When I can wrestle the controls away from MaK wanting to play cocomelon and baby shark shit..I enjoy cranking it up loud...its worth it IMO.

That's why I don't like old speakers. Rubber surrounds for the win.
I'd want to keep an eye on humidity levels even with rubber surrounds. More than heat, I'd think the humidity drying out things would change the tone and flex.

@Tank , you need a walk in humidor for listening...it would be a thing of beauty!

Lol. I’m good. I’ll appreciate it for what it is. No need to delve in deeper.

Since I live in the most mild climate on the planet I’d be willing to hold it for a little while. I’d put it right next to Captain Fantastic and Asteroids. 😁

Yeah. I don’t have a problem keeping it at 85 when we’re not there. I don’t think I could leave this equipment out period if others were renting the house though.

This is the stuff I’m looking for advice on. Is it worth it to have this stuff out there? I don’t really want to have it be a huge pain in the ass.

Well, it really depends on how much time you'd get to utilize the stuff. I think it would also depend on the design of the home in question. It may be possible to have the equipment safely set up in a linen closet, locked away, and the speakers run in either the master, or the living room. In either case, the AV surround sound could be wired into other, more subtle/modern speakers hidden away.

Honestly, I'd just setup a dehumidifier in the beach house, and enjoy it at home. I am a music person, multiple "binders" of CD's, and multiple iPods. My gym room in the garage has subs and a center channel, and my shop has 15's, mids and tweets in the corners (haven't been able to effectively do staging...never staying still). Whatever you do, find a way to put the equipment to use.

My amp took a dump during COVID. Went to replace it and the supply was thin. Ended up spending WAY more than I intended on a Cambridge Audio Edge amp. Never knew an amp could make that much of a difference. Great sound. Dam thing has to weigh about 50 pounds.

I’ve got Dahlquist DQM-9 studio monitor speakers on which I had to take out a loan when I bought them in the 80s.😀

Overthinking it… if it has such value to you because the sentimental value, put it in a closet and leave it. I have a kenwood that was my dads that has made it through bullhead garage heat, Las Vegas garage heat, now in Bakersfield. Thing is on almost 99% of the time. Now granted your system is pricey, don’t forget people have that price in their boat stuff all the time. Also don’t rent to people that you would second guess, gonna mess up more than your stereo. Just my thoughts.
