That’s the one thing I really wanted of my grandpa’s for the exact same reasons as you. The sound of it opening, hearing the flint, smelling it burning, and hearing it close; all very distinct senses.

I’ve been thinking about buying one to have even though I don’t smoke 🚭 Now you’ll fire me up to get one!

Quit smoking 27 or 28 years ago. Still have one in my dresser drawer.

I had heard that Zippo will restore their lighters for just return postage.
Dunno how true that is.

We don't make that promise lightly. We know that behind every Zippo Windproof Lighter sent for repair is an owner depending on our promise to get it back in working order. Whether a Windproof Lighter is 5 years, 25 years, or 50 years old, it will serve as a dependable source of flame for years to come - we guarantee it!

Have one in the camper. Helps with lighting the cigars.
Also carry one on guys golfing trips, same reason.

i don’t smoke, but maybe 3 to 4 cigars a year

A rare stogie is the extent of my smoking. Can’t stand cigarette smoke. I’m sure I have an old zippo lighter in a drawer somewhere in my office or at home, and I know I have a zippo brand tape measure, little six footer if I recall correctly, tucked away in a drawer in my desk.

my grandfather smoked cigars. First rule he always said. “Don’t light your cigar with anything but a match”. The lighter fluid will ruin the cigar.

totally get that. For the expensive cigars follow that theory.
for the cheap ones I don’t even finish, zippo gets the job done

,,,, and you light the cigar with style. Wave the flame around the tip a bit. Show some Panache'.
Winston Churchill style.

Carried a Zippo for many years, eventually changed to a Bic, got tired of burning my leg because of overfilling the damn things. Quit smoking nine years ago, but sometimes still start to reach for a lighter to burn a thread or something. :D

Managed to overfill mine on a regular basis too. Would think I would have learned my lesson but Noooooo.

Not a Zippo but this sat on my grandfathers living room table for as long as I could remember.

That’s awesome! Glad you have that to remember him by.

My sister ended up with Gramps’ Zippo, and she’s a smoker, so I’m cool with that. I’m pretty sure that if I drove over there she’d let me light it for memory’s sake.:)
Gramps had all sorts of stuff he got when he was in the Philippines during WWII; coolest thing was a homemade knife that had a bunch of airplane windshield cross-sections for the handle. Someone spent some time on that. It disappeared when he passed.

That's very cool. I've got a vintage one that might be cool to get working. Brand new in box.

Edit: what I have is an old Scripto. Dad worked for Union Carbide/Colliers in Brea back in the 50s and 60s so I assume that's where it's from since it says something about fertilizer inside it.

I never had one but was around plenty of them.
The feel, the smell, the replaceable flints...
can’t be described.

I have owned and lost way too many. I still have a few. Carried one daily for a few years but now they are just fun. I love the history. One of the better date coded items. Guys will say their father or grandfather carried it for years and you look and find it was made in 1999. Or guys don't know and you find the old logo and you tell them it is older than 1954.

Bought a brand new one for myself when I was 18. It was a GM Licensed Chevrolet lighter. Damn thing disappeared about 10 years ago. Wish I still had it.
