Never had acid reflux (balogna burps) till I started Cialis , Cialis apparently relaxes your sphincter at the top of your stomach , one nite woke up in a panic to get Alka seltzer Now I keep it by my bed
The medication for my reflux is the first and only prescribed medication I take, I'll be 48 in Sept. Both my parents were on high blood pressure and cholesterol meds in their early thirties, I think I'm doing pretty good

People don't do physical work or exercise anymore so fuk em, it's their choice.
I dont think its thier fault. The food pyramid is a lie along with most other nutritional information you have been taught. Eat the opposite of what your dr tells you.

You are told not to eat fat but to have vegetable oil. That eating fat will raise you cholesterol and kill. And dont forget to take a statin to keep cholesterol down. Have you ever thought why does every cell in your body need cholesterol and your body makes it but we seem to think a pill is needed to stop it

You have been told a calorie is a calorie as if your body is bunson burner, the way calories are measured. But it is hormones that tell your body to store fat.

Beef consumption has been on the decline for 50 years but heart disease continues to grow even with better medicene and treatments. Shouldnt heart disease be going down.

If you go low fat it means you are replacing it with vegetable oils. Oils are high in omega 6's which are inflammatory thus bad in high quantities. They have no nutritional value. What you want more of is omega 3.'s. if you eat a standard diet you get a 20 or 30 to 1 ratio of 6 to 3. You want closer to a1 to 1 ratio. As we have gone low fat people are fatter and fatter.

Then there is diabetes. We think of sugar as driving blod sugar. But grains have a higher glycemic index than sugar. Sugar is made up off gluclose and fructose. Fructose is processed by the liver and doesnt raise blood gluclose. On the other hand grains are all gluclose and raise your blood gluclose faster and higher than sugar.

If you are over weight you have diabetes or prediabetes. This come from what you eat and not so much how much.

If you want to be healthy eat a low carb diet. That is 50 grams or less of carbs. That in itself would mean you are not eating processed foods. You need 1 gram of protien per 1 lb of your target weight. If you weigh 250 but want to weigh 200 then eat 200 grams of protien. The rest of your calories comes from fat.

You should learn what your a1c level is. A level of 4.9-5.1 is good. From 5.7-6.4 you are prediabetic. The higher you are in the range the more likely you are to have coronary calcification. Above 6.4 and your diabetic. If you are diabetic your dr will think an a1c between 7-8 is good but that is damaging your body and is slowly killing you. (Edit If 5.7-6.4 is bad and should be lowered then 7-8 is exponentially worse. Diabetes and prediabetes can be reversed with keto. Has your dr told you)

Isn’t fat good if you’re on a keto diet lol
Fat is good. Eggs are good. Steak is good. Seafood is good.

Vegetable oil is really bad and its in everything processed. Grains/flour is bad and it too is in everything processed. Sugar is bad and it is also in every thing processed.

If you cut out processed food that only leaves whole food that look like how they grown or slaughtered. Only fats and protien provide essential nutrients. There are no essential carbs.

Recently 2 separate Harvard researchers published papers concluding that a keto high fat diet is good for mental health. It has been reported to help parkinsons and dementia. It has long been known as a treartment for epilepsy.

The more you look at keto the more you see a standard diet is making you sick and that keto helps prevent or reverse metabolic diseases.

Grits . Depends on the rest of your diet. One recipe i read was made of cream , butter and grits. Depending on how much you ate your carbs would be below 50 grams and would be most or all your carbs for the day.

Some people are spit on olive, avacado and coconut oil. Most seem to think they are good because they are onega 3. I did hear dr chaffee espouse they are not as good as people think. Dr chaffee is a neurosurgeon and is super fit. He falls in the all meat crowd. I see a lot of merit in that.

Thanks for posting that. Where do you get your info? Not questioning, asking, because I'm trying to learn more. Any boards/blogs to follow?

My diet/weight never really changed, but at age 50 I became type 2. Lately I've been trying to get a grip on it, but seeing the highs, and now the scary lows if I take newly prescribed glipizide, in addition to regular metformin. It's frustrating because the Internet is chalked full of conflicting info.

1 Coke zero after coffee in the morning 3 times a week, a 3-4 diet Sunkist a week. So that's about one per day.
Artificial sweetners are a really bad thing. When you intake something sweet your tastebuds tell your brain that you are eating something with sugar, your brain relays that info to your pancreas so it will release insulin to deal with the sugar but there is no sugar. Believe it or not sugar is better than artificial sweetners, artificial sweetners contribute to insulin resistance as well. I was a diet soda drinker for years (2-3 a day) and gave it up after I got covid as artificial sweetners now taste like shit to me, I then read an article about how artificial sweetners screw with your insulin production and blood sugar. I also drink my iced tea with no sweetner/sugar either. I now have 2-3 sodas a week but they are almost always sweetened with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.

If you give up diet drinks watch your blood sugar levels as you change over, maybe even talk to your Dr. or a nutritionist first. I like the carbonation in soda but can't stomach soda water so I compromise with a couple regular sodas a week.

Thanks. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know shit about nutrition and I need to look at drink labels with more scrutiny. And I need to learn more about nutrition; I'll see what Kaiser has to offer.

The whole BMI is stupid. I am 5'9" and weigh between 177 and 180. Chart says I am overweight.

I play an hour of pickleball every day. Monday through Sat I play 2 hours of sand Volleyball in the morning. Mon, Wed, Fri I play 2 hour of sand volley ball in the afternoon. I actually have to eat more on days when I play afternoon VB, because I am burring a bunch more calories. Per the apple watch on those days I a burning over 3000 calories on those day. On the other days I am burning about 2200 - 2400.

I eat very little processed food. I do have to add salt as I sweat like a pig when I play sports. I also drink at least 8 16.9 L bottles of water a day. On afternoon days it is 10-11 bottles. But the gov, says I am fat.

Was listening to a podcast a while back about survival.

People talk about prepping, guns, hunting, bushcraft etc…

Some very smart men basically said sure that stuff is good but if you are fat you’re dead if shit hits the fan.

I guess the good news is there will be a lot less competition if things go bad…lol

The sad thing is, YouTube will have better info to offer than Kaiser.

If you go to you tube you will find a number of drs. I would start with dr ken berry. He cites a lot of studies or experience as a dr. Drs ekberg and berg are good to. But with you tube you then get other similar content. There is also dr chaffee and dr baker. Dr sean omara is a good one but a little different message. His backround is with mri scans and what is happening from visceral fat but it is keto There are other drs too. Most of the drs have had health problems that got them to look at the diet.

There are other lay people with youtube channels that chronical thier experience. One is "my zero carb life". This woman tells about being early 20s and having health problems and weighing at least 250 lbs. The dr told her to quit eating carbs, no other directions , and sent her home. She literally quit eat carbs 20 years ago. She is slender, pretty and looks healthy today. Anoth er guy, ferigno sp?. He went on a carnivore diet and shows what he does. There are others. I dont watch this type of video often but they can be good

The first keto diet was invented by the mayo clinic to help diabetics. I belive thats where the name came from but i could be wrong. Keto has been around since the cave man. Keto really refers to the bodies natural state of producing ketones that the body uses for energy. The body uses either ketones or gluclose but not simultaneously. Thats important to remember.

Gluclose has to be kept in a narrow range in your blood or its very bad for you. Because of that your body prioritizes getting it out of your blood stream with the help of insulin. Because of the immediate danger to your life (think death) of to much or to little gluclose the body prioritizes control. It does not mean that is the perferred fuel as some wrongly think.

WHen fat and gluclose are both present the body has to literally save you life but burning or storing the gluclose. The storage is the job of insulin. If fat is also present it cant be used and must be stored, as fat. If you always have high gluclose and insulin you can not burn fat. Do you think you body has a way to store fat but not be able to use it.

Ketosis is you bodies natural way to burn fat. Go way back to our cave man days. They had feadt or famine. The body would store fat and then use it. It didnt keep adding fat. If he was fat and out of shape how would he kill a deer or buffalo. Could he get away from wolves, mountain lions etc. What if they went 3 days without eating and needed to hunt. The carbs in thier system would have been long gone.

If you have excess fat you need to help it get to its natural fat stores and that is by ketosis. That is by limiting your carbs and cutting out processed food.

How to get into ketosis. First less than 50 grams of carbs a day. The lower the better at this stage. I would say to shoot for 0-20 grams per day. Protien is building blocks for bones and muscle dont consider it fuel. If you are over weight then pick your desired weight . Get 1 gram of protien per pound of desired body weight. Keep your muscle mass up with the protien. Fat is your fuel. Dont shy away from natural fat. If you have dairy then full fat. Dont skin you chicken, eat the fat with your steak enjoy bacon. Enjoy butter

Skim milk is high in carbs/sugar
1/2 and 1/2 is low in carbs.

I mix my protien powder with 1/2 and 1/2. Taste like a milk shake

Dont make a fruit smoothie or a juicer for veggies.

Keto flue is not an illness but rather your body adjusting to not eating poison.

I recommend an electrolyte for minerals that most of us are deficient off. I get mine from dr berg.

Vitamin d3 and k2. I also get dr bergs. I take the 10,000 iu but the is a 5,000. This is a fat soluable vitamin. I take it with a meal or with an omega 3 supplement

An omega 3 supplement. Deficient in omega 3 is the equivalent of being a smoker.

If you are on a diabetic medicine you will very quickly need to adjust your dose. Follow your gluclose very closely.

Educate yourself and dont let your dr tell you its bad. Your dr works for you

i hope i wasnt to long but this hasnt scratched the surface.

You were in the prediabetic a1c range for 10+ years. It is a slow progression. Your insulin was going up as it was controlling gluclose. High insulin is bad. I am sure your dr said hey you fasting gluclose is in range. That test is a point in time and means little. Your a1c is a 3 month average and tells the real story. A high a1c is saying a lot of damage is occurring and you are on your way to type 2.

What your dr should have done is scared the hell out of you and told you to go on a low carb diet .

Like in another post i talked of a1c. If you are not at the 4.9 end of the range you are moving to the diabetic range.

This is awesome and a great starting point. Many, many thanks for sharing your knowledge; it is appreciated.

Time for me to study up. I would rather listen to vinyl and watch music vids, but I suppose I won't be able to do either if I'm dead. Lol, but not really 😵

Thanks again bud :)

At Kaiser I went in at age 45 and they said everything was good. We had to get Obamacare for a few years, and at age 50, I left a routine checkup and was told I have full blown type 2.

I'm back at Kaiser, and now I have the routine doctor shuffle (here today, gone tomorrow), but my current assigned doctor is in fact scaring the shit out of me. He put me on lipitor to reduce the chances of a heart attack, or stroke. I'm like, hey wait a minute, what's he saying...

I/m not blaming my healthcare provider, but I've pretty much surmised I need to educate myself and not rely on them. It's my health, and my responsibility.

Thanks again bud, your easy to understand comments have given me the building blocks towards finding good info.

Research cholesterol and statins. My opinion is not needed and bad for you. I wont take them.

I'm 47, 5'10" and 225. Definitely not in the shape I was, but weight has been consistent for 20+ years. I know I'm overweight, but currently still do a lot more physical activity than most, and eat better than many as well. Sadly, a few months back I went in because I knew my blood pressure was pinned. On meds for that, but thinking of asking the doc to lower the amount soon. Feels goofy now when I stand up sometimes...which was a sign years ago that my blood pressure was low. I cut out all soda and energy drinks, and only one cup of caffinated coffee in the morning now.

This summer, my youngest wants to bulk up. 15yo 6'4" and currently 210. He wants to wrestle 215 or heavyweight. My wife wants me to start working with him. It will be both good for me, and help him. I used to be pretty good at that part.

BMI charts are BS. There is no way possible that someones height and weight can determine their level of obesity. Bone density, muscle density among other factors will change the BMI number massively. There are tests that can measure body fat accurately like Dual Energy X-Ray or Hydrostatic Weighing.

Bottom-line is this, Americans have never been more over weight or unhealthy. The combination of food additives and lack of nutritious food, lack of exercise, lack of sun light, lack of sleep, stress and medications are all contributing factors. The design is simple, poison people with food, send them to the doctor, prescribe them meds and the food industry gets richer, healthcare gets richer and big Pharma gets richer.

It's your life, your health, how do you want to live?

If you think healthy food is expensive, what's the cost of illness. If you think lifting weights is dangerous, try being weak. If you think exercising is time consuming, so is waiting in the doctors office. Most disease is related to lifestyle. You decide that lifestyle. And excuses are like assholes, everyone has one!

Have a great day!

I've been on a program for a few months now. Just weighted myself, 188lbs.... I'm 5'8, 57 years old.. I'm down 32 pounds since my colonoscopy last year and I feel great and have lowered my blood pressure and cholesterol levels substantially. But I'm really on the gas right now to get down to 170 and lose a total of 50 pounds.. That chart from the first page isn't gonna work for me. I have been in the 140's before, I felt weak and didn't look good. I would be happy to be in the 160's and tone..

I do exercise quite a bit now, but I think eating makes the biggest difference. Sadly no more french fries or Ice cream. When I order a meal I'll get a side salad with it and drink water. Those little changes are huge. I try to sacrifice something at a meal. But my number one adjustment has come from drinking less alcohol.. I'm a beer guy, big time... I love IPA's, Hazy's, Stout's etc.... I was drinking 2 or 3 heavy beers a night and waking up in the morning feeling like shit, that's almost 1000 calories in itself. And the older I get the less I can handle it. I despise waking up with a hangover. So by not drinking during the week really makes a difference. I keep the fridge stocked with Heineken Zero's incase I get the sudden urge to have a midweek beer, I've grown to like them.

… 5 foot 11… 182 pounds… I guess I’m 10 pounds overweight… Do I care… Not in the least… for the most part, I quit drinking alcohol in the early 90s… Last night three chicks came over… My old girlfriend… Her sister, the Porsche Cayenne chick… and neighbor girl… Neighbor girl can’t drink because she is six months pregnant… but I had a glass of red wine with the two sisters… Was it fun… Yes… Did I gain any weight… I don’t know… did I wake up with a hangover… 😳…It brought back memories of the old days… Not just a headache… But my entire body ached like a mofo🤷🏽‍♀️

Stopped here yesterday on a road trip for lunch.

This is my idea of fast food. The turkey and cheese sandwich on homemade sourdough bread was terrific. They had fresh soup and a great little grocery store of real food.

Make food great again. Stop eating corporate death burgers.

No kidding.

All we hear these days is how bad sugar is. Ban sodas for kids because it has sugar. Ban this & that because it has sugar.

Sugar bad!!!

Hell, look at a can of pop. . . there is no sugar in it. Its H F Corn Syrup. Box of cereal, HFCS.
Yesterday, I saw a bag of mini-freeze-dried marshmallows (like the ones in Lucky Charms) for sale. I thought who in the hell thought putting marshmallows in children's breakfast cereal was a good idea? And what parents bought it for their kids. Seriously, think about it. Would you give your kids marshmallows for breakfast?
2% milk is 37% fat
90% lean ground beef is 55% fat.

Can you explain this to me? I grew up drinking raw milk from cows with a very high fat content milk (Guernseys if anyone is familiar with cattle breeds). My mom took the cream off the top and we made butter and whipped cream out of it. Even this high fat milk did not have 37% fat. It was about 25%, straight from the cow. Most of the milk cows in CA are Holsteins, which have a much lower fat production than what we had. Also, I worked in a grocery store when I was younger and watched them grind the beef and use a cooking tool to measure the fat content. It sure didn't look like more than half of it was fat to me. So could you explain this in more detail or offer some evidence? Are we talking about different types of fat? I don't understand.

My kids love Lucky Charms. And I do too. They’re magically delicious.

Those are the percentages of calories FROM the fat in the milk and ground beef. Not the total calories.
Gotcha. That makes sense. 37% of the calories are from fat. That isn't quite the same as saying it is 37% fat, at least in my opinion.

Of course they do! They are full of sugar! What red-blooded American doesn't love sugar? Hence, the subject of this thread.

I ate them occasionally as a teenager when I had my own money because my mom wouldn't buy them for me. I didn't buy them for my kids either, though, but to each his own.

It makes all the sense, because when it comes to nutrition and diet what counts is where you are getting calories from. It does not matter how much the fat weighs, which is totally deceptive.

It's about what that food produces in calories.

Recalling:
The 1 gram of protein or carb = 4 calories
That same 1 gram of fat = 9 calories

In the case of "10% fat" on the ground beef label (10% is the weight).
People may read the label and say hey that's lean, when in reality the 11 grams of fat in the below label times 9 = 99 calories out of the 200 calories per serving are pure fat calories

You have to do the math; few labels tell you the fat calories as a percentage of total calories anymore because it would scare buyers. Best to stay under 20% fat or less.

Sorry it took me awhile but I had to find the Jeep Pics for your Hubby. :)

37% is the calories from fat. 63% of calories are from sugar... lactose. 2% is the fat by volume. Milk is mostly water.

I drink half and half. Very low carbs/sugar.

When I had my heart bypass surgery on Nov 18, 2023, I weighed 217 pounds. As of this morning (May 2, 2024) I am 184 pounds. I walk the dog 2-3 times a day through our community and hit the gym every night to lift weights with my wife. I actually walk to the gym which is 2 miles away. I do this since there is no reason to have an extra car taking up a parking spot and give me more cardio. Takes me 30-35 minutes to walk the 2 miles and then I either walk/jog on the treadmill or ride the elliptical bike until my wife gets there.

I would not have been able to do any of this long distance walking prior to Nov 18, 2023.
