Broguiere's.

One of my earliest childhood memories were the drive up dairies and my mom stopping off at Broguiere's in Montebello in route to Disneyland.

It may be the only drive up dairy left in the Southern Calif area. It survived because of the outstanding milks/creams (plural), eggnog and chocolate milk.

Dates way back and has gone full circle in a few ways. Still uses the Glass Milk bottles and is drive up.

The family still bottles their products right there at the store. The bottles are as big a hit as the quality of their products.

The old man,, great, great grandson of the real old man that started the business, Broguiere had enough with the health inspectors and taxes and govt hassles with petty ordinances and closed the place earlier this year. It all started when they made him move his herd off site some time ago, but that was a quality of life issue for the local residents,,, and customers.

Well,, now he's re-opened it and everyone is relieved.

Americans over-sugar many of their foods. European chocolates seem to have more flavor with less sugar may be a good example but just my humble opinion.

Broguiere's chocolate milk has that nice smooth flavor as does their eggnog without that sugar slap in the taste buds.

I remember they had a hall of shame bulletin board with everyone's name that passed a bad check there. You could read it from 20 meters back. Out of character for such a warm hearted family but as the most recent generation of kids are assuming the business that's gone.

Montebello was so cool to us motorcycle riding kids with the Honda American Headquarters, Yamaha, Suzuki and their fantastic display windows of the cool for those day rides back then.
It was Mecca.

There's a couple drive up dairys still around. I know of La Habra and La Mirada. We used to go to the one by Paramount High School. Longs Dairy.

I remember a long time ago camping at Dumont Dunes.
Two little kids came up to camp at Thanksgiving with a handful of $1's and asked if we could spare some milk, their family forgot to bring any.
I had a 4 pack of Broguiere's milk and 2 bottles of their Egg Nog in the ice chest.
I sent the kids back with a bottle of each.
Their famous grandmother came back the next AM with the empties and insisted she pay us. She was nuts about the glass bottles. It's a BFD to some of us.
Nope, no money, just meeting a star from my childhood was enough, and a shock, and what the hell, it's the holidays.

Inquiring minds want to know, who was their grandmother?

The "sugar slap" is sponsored by yoooore government.

It's all derived from corn. When corn went full blown retard after ww2, it was figured out that there's more derivatives from corn than were ever imaginable.

The drive thru dairy at Varial and Devonshire in the porn capitol had the first Donkey Kong machine me and my 5th grade buddies had seen . I remember the cashier pocketing old silver dollars one of my good friends snagged from his mom's stash in exchange for quarters in his quest to master the game ..... The milk was good too

I recall reading that after the swell of support when they announced they were closing - they decided to stay open???

Did they actually ever close? or did they just stay open?

Very cool story about Broguiere's, thanks for sharing. I grew up on Rockveiw dairy products. They had drive thru dairys all around SoCal particularly in my area. As a matter of fact we had them deliver milk to our house when I was a kid and I kept that going well into my thirty's.
Aw, the good old days when the milkman would bring fresh bottles milk and the Helms man would bring fresh baked goods. Life was better back then.
