I got to thinking more about this while at Starbuck's this morning. My son get's a Naked Mango Juice each morning and I have to pay an additional $.05 on each juice. On the juice it says CA Refund, where do we get that refund? Back when I was growing up I use to return the glass bottles to Alpha Beta and get my refund of a nickle or whatever.

Does anyone know where to get the refund because we all pay this extra fee and aren't we suppose to be able to get our refund?

Just curious!!!

Your local recycling center.

But you bring up a good point, because I just cashed in my aluminum, and plastic this past weekend. The recycling yards pay by the pound, but we get charged at teh stores by the unit (?). It'd take some figuring out, but I wonder if it works out to be even, or in our favor?

I brought 3 thirty gallon barrels of crushed cans, 2 thirty gallon barrels of plastic water bottles, and walked away with $154.00... Not bad, considering most people throw that money away.

I was under the impression that a giant truckload of cans was worth about nine bucks...

Just figured by the pound at the recycler we are not getting the equivalent of a nickle per item. Gonna check the local grocery stores for their centers to recycle at.

Dylan, ah forget it!!!

A buddy of mine started recycling all his beer cans when his grandson was born and put the money in a savings account for college. The kid is 16 now and has over $20K in the account. BTW granpa has more than a few beers a day;)

I buy fresh milk in glass bottles at Henrys and they charge me $1.25 deposit, which they refund when I bring it back. I'm not so sure what their policy is on plastic bottles though... interesting. I might have to look into it. :thumbsup

and to think I used to save my cans (uncrushed) and let my buddy pick them up when he would come by, because I 'thought' they werent worth their weight.

keep in mind that I only cash them in maybe twice a year, and thats about a 36 a week, not including soda cans, etc. this return paid for a nice dinner with my wife.

I'm guessin from the replies the plastic is worth more than the cans?

We pretty much just have plastic at our house. The kids go thru gatorade, like mad.

I think you do lose if paid by the pound. Especially at the grocery store joints. You need to go to a real recycler and use a coupon. If you want to be paid by the container you have to go to the automated ones behind the grocery store. Problem is that they can't be crushed, still have to have labels on and you have to load them one by one and wait about a second in between. Stupid time consuming if you have more than a few.

plastic is worth CRAP, I got $1.00 a pound, and $2.00 a pound for aluminum.

the most inportant part of recycling cans/bottles is finding a place that pays top dollar. the grocery stores places dont pay as much as some of the recycling yards. AND if you check the penny saver, most times they have coupons for extra cents per pound. the going rate for aluminum in my area is $2.00/$2.07 a pound.

i think you are correct. one of the ones we went to were dumped into a big trashcan and weighed. another one has a loader that you insert the can one by one.

Albertsons parking lot at Foothill & Mountain. Normally you have to wait in line to use the automated machine and you wonder why you are wasting your time for such a small amount of money. But its a way to earn money for my 7 year old so I do it with her.

Are you sure about that. I use real recycling places but have gone behind Ralph's a few times over the years for the convenience and that receipt they give you is not for store credit. Walk in and go right up to the register and they will give you cash money. Makes it a bit safer than having a ton of cash out in the alley behind the store.

So let me get this straight...

If your cans are crushed they are worth less than the CA Redemption value of 5 cents and are only worth the per pound price?

That sounds like a bunch of crap (with regard to the program). I have a few barrels of crushed cans just because of space they would take up uncrushed.

If you go behind the grocery stores then yes.

Go to a good recycling yard. You know the ones in the filthy parts of town. Look in the papers for good coupon per pound prices and you are good to go.

Also, get canned drinks in the largest can possible, this gets the weight up for fewer cans. Fosters Oil Cans work great. :D
I think the recycle places got nailed a few years ago because they were not giving close to the equivalent to 5 cents per can, they were only doing the standard alum weight price. The yard by my house now has 2 prices, one for just cans, the other for scrap alum. Pretty close to 5 cents each now.
I remember the days in Oregon where you took all your bottles and cans back to the grocery store and they counted them at the check out and gave you cash. Fun days as kids. We lived right on the border of Cali and Ore, so we would buy lots of sodas while in Cali, before Cali started charging CA refund, and then return them in Oregon for the 5 cents. Profit! :)

It really depends on where you go. The place I take my cans give $2 a pound for aluminum and IIRC .95 a pound for CRV plastic. There's approximately 34 cans in a pound. So, they are paying my roughly .06 a can, not .05. If someplace is ripping you off, go to another place. If you can't be bothered to drive all over town to get .02 more per can, you get what you get.

The minimum values are set by the Kalifornia Guvmint:

http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/BevContainer/Rates/Commingled.htm#Attach2

Centers are required to post these values, and you are allowed to demand actual CRV, but there are quantity restrictions, crushed/not crushed, etc rules.

We just started doing it, and I wonder just how long my ROI is going to be on the $10 trash can and $7 can crusher. LOL

It really hit me a few months ago. Right-Aid had 24 pack Water for $2.00 or something like that. When I got to the counter and realized the CRV added another $1.20 to the case, I about shit myself. You never notice CRV when you are grocery shopping, it just goes on the tab. When you buy something specifically because it was on sale, and then see a 50% increase in price from CRV, it makes you think twice about just throwing those containers in the curbside bin. :bash:

Does it actually say 5cents CA redemption value on a CAN? I know it does on the plastic bottles.

And with the new bottles, that are super light weight, I'm thinkn the 5cents per bottle is way more than just what the weight of that bottle is worth.

You'd be surprised. I don't crush. I just fill up the large black outdoor garbage bags. As I fill them up, I toss them in the bed of my truck. Once I have 5-6 bags, I usually head down to the recycling place. I took 5 bags in last week and I think I got $38 and some change. It's a round of twilight golf somewhere. I don't collect cans, just the ones we drink here at the house. We don't drink a lot of plastic. I usually see somebody at the recycling place and give them 10-15 plastic bottles for their collection.

Totally forgot about Sporting Goods!
Man, that place had everything.

Not quite the only place. You are forgetting about Fedco!!!

I remember the store, and I know we went there once in a while, but I can't remember what they sold. I do know that Fedco served as the model for FEdmart, and later Price Club, which is now Costco. Talk about a bright idea...the Price family is loaded. They're the in-laws of my sister.

Thrifty Pharmacy, just for the ice cream of course, LOL!

Look in the Pennysaver Phil, think the best coupon was $2.05(Aluminum) then I go to the place on Etiwanda S of Foothill. Think I had 6 bags last time and got around $54.00.

Same kinda discount department store with groceries and such like Gemco. Gemco was owned by lucky stores. Fedco was started by a bunch of post office workers and other federal employees as a coop to save some money and it blossomed from there.

We had all the good stuff out here back then too. Gemco right in Chino. It's been many different grocery stores since and is now a Superior and a 1/3 of it is a tire or muffler joint.

Fedco in Ontario right off the 60 next to the poop plant. Ontario police station now.
