So I have a virus on my puter at work that I got from opening up a fake UPS shipping email. Long story short, I have downloaded AVG free version and it gives me the option of clicking a power user box??? Then I need to pick whether I want to heal or send to vault??? Help!!!!

Thanks

AVG Free works pretty good for clearing up a lot of problems. Is the computer XP or Vista? I've never seen the power user option in AVG, it may be more advanced options being for more advanced users, or perhaps some way to elevate your rights in windows to fix the problem (probably the first). I'd first try to heal the problem, if it fails click move to vault. If both fail restart into safe mode (press F8 prior to the XP splash screen at boot up) and so a hard drive scan in safe mode trying the same options. Viruses can be a pain, keep AVG running and up to date (automatic anyways) and you should be ok.

Trend Micro anti-virus has the best system cleaner.....

Click on the following link and where it says "for non-users of Trend products" download "sysclean.com" to a folder on your computer (make sure you know where you download this file).

http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ%5FSUB721%2EF&VSect=Sn

Then download the latest Trend pattern file at this link (download the Windows pattern file to the same folder as you downloaded the "sysclean.com" file).

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/viruspattern.asp

After you do this, double click on the "sysclean.com" file, and just say "yes" or "run" where it prompts you.

I have cleaned thousands of computers with this free program from Trend Micro....the company that most big corporations use for anti-virus. It will delete the virus and fix any changes to the registry made by the virus.

good luck!

You can also install "Windows Defender", a free anti-spyware program from Microsoft.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en

I don't usually run it all the time, because it will slow your computer slightly.....but once infected, I would install it. Run a "full scan" after installing it and updating it (which it will prompt you for).

Yea, Limewire really loads a bunch of spyware and popups on your computer....it really sucks!

And I agree "Hijack This" is a great program also...........

Limewire has screwed up the kids computer repeatedly, and the little idiots just keep loading it back up after I scrub and re-install system. I quit fixing their computer last time, it has been sitting for months now locked up and I refuse to fix it again until they learn.

I opened a message and got the "Amish Virus". But since the Amish don't use electricity or computers, all it said was this:

You have just received the Amish virus.

Since we have no electricity or computers, you are on the honor system.

Please delete all of your files on your hard drive. Then forward this message to everyone in your address book.

We thank thee.

The fake UPS email came out last week at the end of the week,if you go to UPS's site, you can download the fix from there, or use the antivirus programs that were listed above.

And try to keep the viruses away from your peter from now on.

I don't see a fix......just this:

Attention: Virus Warning

Service Update

We have become aware there is a fraudulent e-mail being sent that says it is coming from UPS and leads the reader to believe that a UPS shipment could not be delivered. The reader is advised to open an attachment reportedly containing a waybill for the shipment to be picked up.

This e-mail attachment contains a virus. We recommend that you do not open the attachment, but delete the e-mail immediately.

UPS may send official notification messages on occasion, but they rarely include attachments. If you receive a notification message that includes an attachment and are in doubt about its authenticity, please contact customerservice@ups.com.

Please note that UPS takes its customer relationships very seriously, but cannot take responsibility for the unauthorized actions of third parties.

Thank you for your attention.

I have a question about the links that you put up. I was able to get the first part but when i tried to get the second part i don't see the windows pattern file. when i tried to run the program i keep getting a message that there is a file missing and it says "spy ware scan will start disabled". I was wandering if you could help me out with a little more direction. Thanks a lot .

same here.

Just ignore the spyware message and say OK...then click on Scan....it works....you might get an initial message that says "no virus found"...that is just a preliminary scan.....let it run.....click on "Scan" you will see a command prompt window (DOS window) as it scans all your files.

Just do it.....it works!

I have fixed thousands of computers with this program....let it run!

And you have to un-zip the pattern file after you download it......

Do I need to come over there...........:hmm

Well, I'm having a big problem now. I have installed the Trend Micro software and see it is picking up a lot of errors. Does it automatically fix these problems? The AVG program read the virus as a trojan horse. Does the Trend Micro deal fix that? Let me know.

I say blow it up and start afresh! Those viruses can be a real pain~you think you're rid of them and they regenerate themselves. Whatever you decide to do, good luck--you're going to need it.

OK i got the second part and i am still getting the window that tells me i am missing a file then i click OK and a second window comes up that i can move and then click on the scan files. When it is done i click on the OK in the message box and everything automatically goes away. All it does is a very fast scan that takes like 30 seconds. is that what it is supposed to do.

I can't get it to work, looks like a good program. There is some .DAS file missing and says the scanner will be disabled but it still opens up and runs. Any ideas?
