I've been looking for a vintage Sansui receiver for a while now. There are a few listed in the Reno CL but are all located in CA. No big deal to drive over there to look at them but every single ad has email only, no phone number. All of these ads have been up for several months. I have sent an email through CL but did not get any replies. Anyone know what the deal is with these?

Here is an example.

I'm willing to buy this unit (if it works as stated) but am a little leery of the ad. Like if I send my phone number I'm going to immediately get a hundred phone calls about my car's extended warranty.🤣

I hate to admit this to anyone.
I have been using CL alot less, due to the sheer volume of scammers.

I have had more success using FB Marketplace. Noting one key thing. I only use FB for Marketplace.
I have bought several things in the last 6 months. Even sold a 2021 Chevy 1500 4x4, it technically sold in 6 hours, but banks where close, so I had to meet the buyer their credit union the following day.

My advice, as much as it sucks to be part of FB, it does have a place… as in the new Craigslist. LOL.

That ad looks legit, but at 29 days old it may be sold and he just forgot to take the ad down.

If you sent an email including your phone number with no response just move on.

I’ve found the same disappointment from Craigslist, and progressively worse over the recent years.

Offer-up is trash, and I’m still not willing to join the Facespace.

To sum it up, I’m paying retail for things I need and not spending money on things I don’t.

There is actually some guy advertising vintage receivers on FB, forget if he is in Havasu or possibly Kingman.

Going a step further, I plugged Sansui 9090db into the Marketplace search and came up with a whole handfull of them, many in Southern California, one in Vegas.

The scam is simply collecting active email addresses and phone numbers. The person bundles them up and sells them to spam companies. I think they are usually 50 emails/phone numbers to a bundle on average

I buy a fair amount of vintage stereo stuff.

OfferUp and FB always seem to have better deals. I troll old ads for bargains.

And on OfferUp - if you don't see anything good - it's usually because the piece was already sold and the buyer asked the seller to take the ad down (that way, other buyers don't see the ad and offer the seller more money. ) It really is a right place at the right time deal.

Another thing I've learned with stereo equipment sellers - read the ad carefully. Often times, just like reading a statute/law, every word may have meaning.

Or more commonly, watch out for omissions disguised by phrases like ''powers on". "But does it play music from each channel" is what you need to ask them.

Factor in the cost of servicing an older piece if the piece does not have a solid history of performing for decades without issue. Sometimes the service cost is the deal killer.

Use a google voice phone number if you are worried about giving your phone number out. It forwards calls from the new number to your real number and the person never knows your real number. You can make calls from the new number from the app.

I have never had any luck getting a response from Craigslist by using the reply button.
These guys repaired my old garage stereo that have had since high school and had lots of really cool older equipment for sale.

Yup, you can also use them to text. GV numbers are awesome.

Looks like a real ad.
If it said "hope to hear from you" it'd be fake 🤣
