The color I found is an automotive paint. I don't think that will hold up good on the boat trailer with salt water user. So wanting to see if I can get it in imron.

Isnt imron still available as long as it isn't for automotive use?

I believe Acrylic urethane is similar in properties.

In my opinion the new Urethanes are more durable than Imron
I agree.
I haven't heard talk about Imron on cars since the '90's, back when the big deal was about it being used on aircraft.
I remember the big downfall to it being so hard it flaked off when(not if) it got chipped.

Powder coat, if it's stripped down. Maybe a galvanize dip for salt.
I originally was going to do that. But if powder coat chips, you can't fix it.

If it’s going in the salt don’t waste your time. Been down that road except mine was worse I had a tube trailer. Sell yours and get a custom galvanized heavy duty one for $7000 with triple axles. I used salt away every time I launched and washed the trailer really good. Still didn’t help. Having one built with electric brakes just like this one but all galvanized and no tubes.

Powder coat is paint sans the solvents. It can be touched up like any other paint, color sanded and buffed or painted on top of. You can even top coat powder with another color or clear. So, chipping is no problem.

Used to love imron / Deltron. The stuff laid down like lacquer.
Do you have a tube trailer? If you do you're already screwed.
I do salt with a channel trailer under my doc banger. Salt away and rinse all the time. Still can't beat the salt. I might pull my axle and springs and spring hardware and get them galvanized. Hollow tube axle needs to be dealt with on the inside also.

It's all channel. I do have square tube axles though. Cheap and easy to replace.

It's old technology and it's brittle, urethane is your friend
So your saying it will crack and flake off? Even the new marine stuff?

I'm just saying I've been a painter for 35 years and have shot gallons and gallons of Imron and I wouldn't use it on anything I own.

I shot my boat with urethane twenty something years ago and it has held up great. Is it bullet proof? No, but it has held up better than Imron would have.

Would you use it on a trailer that goes in salt water?

Seriously what makes it better than imron? I'm old and that was the shit when I was young. It pretty much held up to anything.

I'm no pro painter, but I've done a few boats and cars. Why in the hell would you need 2 gallons for a boat trailer? You'd have extra starting with a quart.

Big trailer. Plus gonna do the bilge in same color.

I can paint my 1100 sq. ft. house with 5 gallons. You don't need 2 gallons, you need a quart.

Ok. So I can do 1 gallon. I guess I should have asked what the coverage is. Have bought any yet, just priced it. So 1 gallon would do a 38 ft trailer plus a bilge?

No, you'll likely need a quart....and you'll have plenty left over.

If I gave a shit about my trailer, I'd paint it with por15...but I have a channel trailer. If I had a tube trailer, I'd build a new one out of channel and then paint it.

They only sell it by the gallon. Por15 is not in the color I want.

8-Tracks were the shit when you were young too!

What part of "Not as durable" are you struggling with Chief?

And a quart won't do shit, you'll need AT LEAST a gallon to do your trailer and bilge

That's what I'm after, more durable as in how. I've seen 20 year old imron on cars that are just know needing some chip repair. Boats aren't getting the road abuse a car does so I can see lasting longer on a boat. But a trailer gets submerged, it get the rocks and sandblast from the road. What are some of the differences that make urethane a more durable paint. Not scientific shit.

Hell even cassette tapes are starting to come back. :)

Not being argumentative here but why are you painting your bilge instead of using something like bilge coat. Are you looking for the color?

Last I checked Long Beach was in CA:rolleyes:

That is not a bad price really. I payed $450 gal for off white & $900 gal for yellow when I painted my dump truck. Took almost 15 gal total

Urethanes are more flexible (some of them you don't even have to add flex agent to when painting rubber bumpers)
Imron is brittle as fuck, it might take a little more of an impact to make it chip, but when it does, it pops off the size of a nickle instead of the size of a pinhead

Will the urethane hold up to the salt?

I would think so, they salt the fuck out of the roads here in the winter and I've never had any issues as a result.

Etching primer and a good sealer are your friend....

Just depends on what paint line you go with, most are a "dedicated system", so you would use the same brand of sealer as you do paint
