I never crabbed, but spent time on a 190' dragger/ processor for FCA.
The boat I was on (Alaska Ranger) later sank killing 5.
The fish master was Takahashi when I was on it, but Konno was on it (and died) when it sank.

A friends son does that and has been on the show. Kyle Dyerly.

Me.. never ever ever. I wouldn't even enjoy a boat ride during one of those much less trying to work on one.

I've known a number of commercial fisherman and boat owners through the years......It's as hard as it looks and then some. When the pots/nets are being pulled, there is no time to waste and "slackers" are not tolerated. You ain't got to like those on deck with ya, but you damned sure got to trust them with your life and they're trusting you with theirs.

Whether fishing the Bering Sea, GoM, or any ocean or large body of water, danger lurks and can strike in micro seconds.

When I was in the Diesel repair business, I lost several regulars to crazy accidents. One crusty super cool veteran captain lost his son. 19 years old and he got caught up in the main winch that hauled in the nets. Wound him up and crushed him, nearly cutting the kid in half....Deck hand that saw it go down, ran to the wheelhouse in a crazy frenzy. Cap had go on deck, to back the winch off, pull the kid loose, and then secure the gear before an 8 hour run to port. Kid's body was wrapped in a tarp and laid on deck until the CG met them. Cap wouldn't stop and took her on to his dock.....Poor guy broke down like a bay at the end of it. I'll never forget that sad day.:(

Cap's name was Ernest Lowe and everytime I hear Lynyrd Skynyrd play the song about the old blues guy Curtis Lowe, I think of that tragic day........

I work with guys that have done it, and one of my friends SIL's husband spent years up there crabbing. It's a tough job with a lot of personal sacrifices, but man they make good money. When Capt Phil talked about coming home and blowing his money on hookers and blow, he wasn't making it up. Guys try and do this as a career and have a family, and it doesn't work out well. My buddies SIS took 2 years of wages from her husband, put a restraining order on him and took everything that guy had worked for along with two kids. Guy came home for a month in two years and couldn't go in any of the houses he owned because his wifes boyfriend had shacked up with her and his family was living in the other house.

I doubt there is merit to this -

but earning a living with a family almost demands that you are surrounded by people that would make these kinds of accusations.

This show catches my attention because about twenty years ago I was working with a guy that had been up there and talked about chopping ice for 8 to 12 hours to keep the boat from sinking in a winter storm. Fugg that!

I have seen some ugly stuff, I am most definitely not a medical person. Cutting a glove off a Buddy's hand knowing a finger or two are probably toast is tough, your trying to give some encouraging words but in your heart you knows its bad.

You might surprise yourself, I'm 53 and can still play with the kids.

No crab on the grounds, looks like they have to go damn near to Russia.

Rough year for crab, quotas got chopped and weather was tough....thought about buying a few cases to bring home till I found out what a 30lb. box was going for, even at the Buddy price almost double last year.

I can't tell you how many of these stories are out there, these guy's that are sending their money home to a deadbeat spouse aint too sharp. Worst one for me anyways was the Wife that cleaned out all the accounts, stripped out the house and found a way to have his dog put down then moved in with the guy's best friend, came home to a restraining order on made up accusations.

Those two would never sleep peacefully again, I would nail the doors shut and burn that fucker to the ground.

It sucks as bad as it sounds not to mention you are not making money when your doing it.

The weather this season has been fairly mild in the teens and twenties. Yea busting ice can be brutal.

My dad took me on a salmon charter out of Westport when I was 10 or 12 , oh my! There were 15 or 20 foot swells that day and the boat bobbing around like a cork all day I just wanted to die and get it over with.lol To this day I have no desire to ever do that again. The funny thing was I caught the most fish that day , but as soon as it was in the boat I was sick again and curled up on the fish box.

Yea, we were way north a lot and it was a steady 25-40 wind for like 2 months...test you're sanity. Are you on a trawler?

That Japan deal was something else, beer vendor truck at the gangway every night after work, beer in vending machines on the sidewalks.
We were pretty out of control over there, I was post divorce with an attitude and was pretty wild while I was on that boat, this was before the no visitor rule and I had em coming and going nightly. :champagne:

Always finished the night at the beer truck with a " Happy Cup " of hot Sake, perfect thing before hitting the rack.
In Korea one or two trips to Green St. from Texas St. was the order of business:drink:thumbsup

Back then there was a cook named George on the boat and that boy was a bad influence, we were a terror together, that beer truck was cool as hell, wing truck that would open on both sides with beer on ice and he would set up tables and chairs....so damn cool.

Enjoyed the video. Don't believe any commercial fishery has ever been depleted when using "hook and line".

We are the least obtrusive fishery there is, if I get 5 halibut a day we are on notice....a dragger kills tons of everything...imagine being at the bottom of a 50 ton net.

20 years ago someone would give me 15-40 thousand in cash and say see you in 6 weeks, trust me shit got crazy. Imagine 6 guys together with over 100K in their pockets, we would do 2 days in Dutch, couple in Anchorage then on to Vegas...I would not trade those day's for anything and apologize for nothing...I watch a movie like the Hangover and crack up, that was us....fisherman are generally a little left of center.

Mike,
What you did for me was above and beyond, for the peeps that don't know I sent 55 pieces from my new to me Canyon from Mass to Cali for polish, dude flaked out while I was working the Bering Sea. Mike drove out there and recovered all of my parts and got them shipped back. Shit, I have friends that would let me down on a deal like that.....The pictures you posted were pretty cool, that was a neat deal and a restoration in the faith of humanity....I thank you

Lol, I have done that a couple of times out of Westport. The last time I went out the captain of the charter ( 75' boat) said enough is enough and called it a day. Everyone onboard was sick an hour in, including the deck hands. We spent 9 hours on that boat that everyone of us would gladly like to have back. I drove home to Millcreek (5 hours) and still had a hard time walking, standing stationary made me get sick again. Not fun.

In Osaka there were these cool little cafe type deals on every corner, 4 stools and one guy behind the bar that we would grab a cup of noodles and a shot from, my first one I stopped breathing for over a minute....that shit was like moonshine over there.

That is very cool of Mouzer!

There is another guy on here named "Pat" that has a 24 Spectra. He also works the fisheries up in Alaska. He's a mechanic on one of the boats, but I can't remember which one. He spends some time here in Havasu, some time in Seattle, and the rest in AK. Super cool guy if you ever get a chance to meet him Poncho! He's about as Salty as they come (no shit).

Is that boat at Fisherman's Terminal in Salmon Bay right now? I drive overt the Ballard bridge every night on my way home and it looks like all docks are full with fishing vessels. Also noticed 4 huge trawlers at pier 90 / 91?

Yes it is, my relief is onboard helping rebuild both main engines.

Dave,

My dream was crushed, between buying the boat on a opposite coast and then finding out every hard part was in the wind I was done....Mike brought it back to life, there was no way I was going to buy everything again....he was my hero.

Curious who you're friend is, mechanic is an engineer in the maritime world, I've been one for 20 years and crossed paths with most everyone.

One of my employees has done two summer gigs on a cod boat up there. He says it is just brutally cold as fuck. He spent most of his time below decks processing the fish and loading and stacking them.

All the newbs would puke, it stinks, lots of guys on drugs and everyone pretty miserable. But he'd pull down a grand a week doing it, so a two month stint nets him $8000 to bring home. Hella long hours, cramped conditions....

They pay your plane ticket up there, but if you quit early they deduct it out of your last check.

He isn't going to go this year. He's making decent money down here and has a kid now.

Just asked Stacy what his screen name is and it's nuckigfuts.. the guy posting in this thread (now I feel like an idiot.. lol). Seems like I can remember two of the three.. Screen name, boat or real name, but never all three.

Nuckingfuts is the guy Dave is referring to. I had never met him before until a couple years ago. I had told another forum member in LH that I would send him some old WA state license plates for his collection for free. Never got around to it, just being lazy on my part. When NF sais he was going to DS a couple years ago I asked if he would take the plates and deliver them. I met him at a local establishment, gave him the guys number and the plates and he did the rest. NF did me a solid. Also seems like a guy that would be fun to have a beer or 12 with.

Every one has mellowed, including the town.

Did someone say beer?:)

Any idea what the 3516 went for? Last I saw the high bid was 50k and when I checked a few hours later the bidding was closed.
