Has anyone done this? Pros-cons? Being in ca I still need to get it smoged, a friend said you can get an illegal smog for $200-$250.

With it being just a visual on the smog would they even notice? I need to delete a 2015. Have a smog guy if needed but the guy I use looks it over for 1 minute and passes.

Never thought of it that way. Sure would be nice to get it done.

I did it. Deleted DPF, DEF, and “turned off” the EGR in the tune. 4” downpipe back exhaust. Truck picked up 4mpg running a 70hp tow tune. No more codes, no more DEF, way more power

That seems worth it. What year truck is that on?

You guys have no idea what the Ca BAR will do to a smog tech if caught , and they are stepping up enforcement. Wouldn’t surprise me if they retrieve all customer records and go after them also . They have the resources.

I feel you. I didn’t even think about doing it while it was under warranty but now that is over with it seems worth it however I want to make sure I’m not going to regret it or end up with issues getting it smoged.

So glad I live in a non-smog area. I dld DPF delete (pre-DEF truck) and tune and truck hauls ass and get's 20 MPG on trips at 70MPH.

I think you might be better figuring a way to register the truck in another state. My buddy bought a 2018 truck and used my address. He saved a ton of $ for no sales tax and doesn't need smog. Of course, he's a retired LEO so doesn't have to worry too much about having a CA driver's license and a NV plated truck. If you can get your DL in another state too then you're pretty safe.

In most scenarios BAR will not go after a consumer. When there is a criminal filing however, the DA will often include the customer. There have been cases where vehicles were seized (used in the commission of a felony) and ordered crushed by the judge or donated to automotive educational programs.

In my time at BAR I only had two cases where the customer was prosecuted. One was when a guy had his buddy clean pipe his dual quad, tunnel ram 2002 Camaro. I didn't go after him the first time but when he had it piped by someone else and sold that Camaro to an 18 year old girl who didn't know the difference (and didn't know she could never get it smogged) I included him in the criminal filing also. The guy was a used car salesman at a dealership and DMV revoked his license after he pled guilty to VC 20 (filing false documents). He was also ordered to buy the car back, repair it and have it tested at the referee before he sold it again. For those that think this is an overreach, I sleep real well at night knowing this POS can't rip off another young girl like this. The sad part was that the smog tech who clean piped it had worked for the shop since he was 17 (25 years). They sent him to all his training and bought him his tools. The shop had been in business since the 1930's and had never been in trouble. The tech was selling smog certs out the back door without their knowledge for $200.00 a pop. The shop ended up on probation and surrendered their station license. The owner told me he was more hurt by what the tech did to him than any penalties they had to face. It took him two weeks to fire the guy because he was like family. This is not always a victimless crime.

This is one of many reasons why I've kept my 07 dodge dually (came off the line in Dec of 06) 5.9 Cummins, 6 speed manual, and no extra bullshit other than the catalytic converter.

I've thought about deleting my 18 powerstroke as well but plan on waiting for the powertrain warranty to run out. 5yr/60,000 miles. was thinking about doing it after 10,000 miles. which at my rate will be 5 years. after the initial 2700 mile drive from Iowa i maybe put 2,000 miles on her.

I fully deleted my 2008 duramax, when I sold it o got full value and the buyer flew in and drove it back to Reno NV. I just gave him the stock exhaust components and showed him he had the ability to tune it back to stock and have the exhaust re-installed if he wanted. Just need the right buyer

You don’t need to smog it for 8 years from purchase year. You have plenty of time left.

Is that a true story? I thought it was every 2. That changes things.

My 17 is deleted...but I know a guy that owns EZ Lynk. Your truck might be the last to be able to delete...19 we will see.

Every other year on a Diesel. My 2015s have been smogged twice each already. 5 minutes in and out racket for money. They visual everything and blip the throttle for smoke test.

I was not aware of that. Is that because they are 2500 or 3500? Commercial? Or simply because diesel?

I’m not arguing with you guys, but I don’t even see it calling out diesels on the DMV site. It says “vehicles 6 model years and newer exempt”... they have not even updated their own website to include the new 8 year change.

Sorry for the partial misinformation...

Diesel trucks under certain GVWR. Not sure if a 1500 diesel is same but 3/4 and 1 tons every other year.

Just found it.. diesel before 97 and/or over 14,000 GVRW smog exempt.

Everything else exempt for 8 model years or older than 1975.

Again, sorry for the false hopes..

I was excited for a minute. Then remembered I’ve already had it smoged once.

I would never buy a diesel truck (or any vehicle) that had the factory tuning changed....who knows how much the previous owner had abused that engine.

Don't have the huevos to delete.... sweated a little just to tune it

My 16 GMC first year registration required "first year smog".. every 2 years after the initial test.....

It was just after the VW emissions scam...

Coincidence????

The diesel smog test will focus on a visual inspection of your vehicle's emissions/smog components, a system check of the On Board Diagnostics (OBD II) system, and a smoke check for visible smoke from the PCV system or smoke plume observed 3 to 15 feet from the tailpipe(s) that lingers for more than 3 seconds. Diesel cars and trucks which fail the diesel smog test will have to get their vehicles repaired at a diesel vehicle repair shop before retesting.

Diesel smog inspections are required during a diesel vehicle's initial registration in California and once, every two years, thereafter. The diesel smog check cycle will continue for as long as the vehicle is registered in this State.

What tuner is everyone using? I have the banks automind 2. Its ok everywhere except the increased mpg, might get 1mpg better with it, nothing like it claims. Also when you hand calculate it, it’s off 1mpg better then your actually getting. Also the towing tune doesn’t seam like much.

Are they having a hard time breaking thru the hardware?

Yes...you would not believe what it took to get this done years ago. Now you have the danger of the EPA fines, they basically just change the rules whenever they want. But the bigger issue is terrorism. The encryption has to be extremely complex and constantly changing due to the threat of a terrorist attack. Basically they could hack in and take over control, can you imagine 100,000 trucks accelerating to 100 than making a turn.

I didn’t know that. I thought you could tell it from the history on the on-board vehicle computer.

Possibly but do you check that when you buy a truck or car? If it was removed in the past the key counter would still be high and you could always think it was just a dealer flash etc.

Most everyone with a Duramax is using EFI live. I’m assuming that your not looking for anything crazy so I’d look at Duramax tuner, but they don’t delete trucks anymore due to the risk with the epa. They have great emissions on tuning if your not set on deleting the truck. If you want to delete it, their are many other tuners out their that still allow you too like ppei, moonshine, and motor ops. All personal preference on what you want. If you want to play it safe I’d go with Duramax tuner if you want a little more power go with moonshine and order a fass or airdog lift pump to save the cp4 so it doesn’t blow up.

I am mainly looking for MPG increase. After reading though all of the replies I won’t delete it unless I was able to register it in another state.

Emission on tuning will clog the equipment much faster than stock.

I don't think you are going to see the big MPG increase without the delete. You might get +1mpg. The big gains are from letting the motor breath, the stock exhaust is so restrictive between the DPF, catalytic converter, muffler, and there are a crazy amount of what I will call "turbulators" (little tabs welded on the inside that cause the airflow to tumble, probably to help the DEF mix with the exhaust). Plus the tunes that yield the big MPG increase don't play nice with the DPF filter.
