I've got a 2011 Silverado 2500HD with the Duramax engine. I took it in to a well respected diesel shop in Chino and had them replace a leaking water pump. When I picked it up a check engine light was on, I figured because they disconnected the batteries, so I used my Edge Insight to check and clear the codes. I drove home without any issues, but when I got home I shut the truck off and it started to diesel like a gas engine, so I turned it back on. I turned the key off and it continued run and the check engine light kind of glowed. I'm like WTF? So I turned the key on again and turned it off and it sputtered a couple of times then shut off. I turned the key on without starting it up and checked to see if any codes came up again and the same codes that I erased were back:

U0140 - Lost communication with BCM
U0121 - Lost communication with ABS control module
P163C - Unknown
P0650 - Malfunction indicator light control circuit
U0106 - Lost communication with glow plug control module
P0381 - Wait to start controller

I unplugged and replugged in my Edge unit, reinitialized it and cleared the codes again and started the truck. It started and shut off like it should. I took it around the block and shut it off and it worked fine.

Now fast forward to this morning - I get to work and it won't shut off again. After turning the key off and on a few times it finally shuts off after it diesels a few times.

I called the shop and they tell me to bring it back in. That's fine, but everything was running great before I brought it in, and now this.

Has anyone out there had this happen to them before?

I have done a few Duramax water pump replacements. Never have had any of these issues. Have you read and cleared the codes with a scanner? Not the Edge.

Disconnect and reconnect abs module, ecm, and glow plug controller with batteries disconnected. Some guys will disconnect these when doing a water pump as they are slightly in the way.

Possibly they did not reconnect them correctly.

Edge units go bad sometimes. Not saying that is it for sure but I have seen that happen multiple times.

Too coincedental, I think they disconnected something and either didn't seat the connectors back in all the way or reset the computers as was suggested. It sure sounds like something they did. What would really piss me off is they had to know this happened and still gave it back to you.:grumble:

I would drop what your doing and take it right back to the shop, let them be responsible to fix it and dont give them any ammo to rationalize it. If I was a shop looking for an out I might say "you had it for 3 days and tuned it with your edge...I dont know what you've done since u left here...all I did was change a water pump".

You said they are reputable so that probably wouldn't happen but if I was the shop I'd want it back right away also and wouldn't want the customer messing with it so I could retrace my exact steps to figure out the issue.

It's going back this afternoon. I can't get away from work. My Edge is only a monitor, not a tuner, but it can read and clear codes. That's all I've done to it other than unplugging it and trying the truck without it to no avail.

I've talked to them and they asked me to unplug and reconnect those connectors , but I don't have time and I have no idea where these connectors are so it'll have to wait until this afternoon that I can take it back - I'll keep you guys posted.

Got it fixed - the mechanic put the ground wire from the lift pump on the positive battery post. It was back feeding power back to the fuse block and energizing the relays that kept the fuel pump going, thus keeping the engine running.

So nice to have the truck shut off when you turn the key off.

Good to hear they got it fixed and they took care of you. I need to get some RDP stickers. I was there today and we probably crossed paths.
