Hey everyone, on cold start and full throttle load of my 2012 F150 Ecoboost, it sounds like there is a pissed off cricket under the hood with some weird boost characteristics. Some digging on F150 forums indicated that warped exhaust manifolds are common on these trucks and would exhibit the exact same symptoms that I was experiencing.

After talking to the local stealership and getting quotes for $1400 to replace the manifold, has anyone done a manifold job on a vehicle with a turbo bolted directly to the manifold? Anything I should be prepared for or worried about?

Are there aftermarket exhausts available for these? I'd look to a performance add if I had to replace factory items.

I have the exact same truck, dont have the issue you have however if you are going to attempt the work yourself you might also want to change the cooler lines that go to each turbo. Over a period of time the O rings go out and coolant starts to leak out of them.

Can you explain the problem further. What is it doing under full throttle load?

I am pretty knowledgeable about these engines. I doubt it?s the manifold but I need to know the systems.

Also 3.5 or 2.7 and year?

2012 3.5

Cold start gets a real high pitched squeal and ticking that I have isolated to the driver side. Still getting a clean whistle from passenger side. Once it warms up it goes away until I do full throttle pulls then the weird ticking and squealing is back. Myself and passengers have both noticed that it seems to be coming from the driver side during that as well. Then, if I set the cruise at 2200ish RPM which is like 75% boost, I can feel it surging underneath me where it builds boost and then loses pressure over and over again.

Sounds exactly like these videos (warning to headphone users turn it down before you play)

Symtoms sound like the cariable vain turbo is getting stuck. Not twisting the blades. The high pitch sound is cuz the turbo vain is stuck in one position & the airflow is making noise. The surging is the computer adding fuel cuz it is talking to the turbo that is giving false reading. Could be totally wrong but Ive had 2 of my peterbilts do this same thing because the VVT computer was done! Just my $.02

I had a 2011 with the 3.5 eco boost and had similar sounds. Sounded like the waist gate on the turbo wouldn?t open. It surged under a load. It ended up being the coil packs. There was 2 bad at the same time. Then later more went out. There not that much. I really noticed it when I tried to tow my trailer. I was almost certain my turbo was broke.

I'd say that the problem was driving the vehicle, even if it is a Ford ...........

Right? 12k miles out of warranty. Thankfully, if it is just the manifold it'll be less than $100 in parts

By 12K out of warranty miles, I hope you mean an extended one :eek I've only got 36K miles on my 2012 3.5 EB, was hoping I'd get a few more while I'm waiting for the Raptor supply and demand to catch up a bit :D

A good friend of mine had 2 engines replaced under warranty. Was back in the shop and they said it needed another engine. Ford did a leomn law on it and he bought a new Ecoboost Raptor.

Holy shit talk about strange luck of the draw :eek But that's the spirit, jump right back on that Ford horse and get an EB Raptor

Unless it's your friend of course :D My first wife could damn near kill a car by just being around it, never seen anything like it :(

I told him he was a glutton for punishment. I was really surprised he bought another Ecoboost since he did complain about the reliability and the mileage of the ecoboost. I think what kills them is that he was always in boost with his huge 37 inch tires.

If you continue to "hammer it when cool or cold" the exhaust manifolds will always have problems on a turbo motor .

You need to drive it "with care" (off boost and under 2000 RPMs) when first started and run, along with when the motor is COOL . (below running temps)

When any piece of (iron, stainless, steel, even inconel) goes from "ambient temps" to 1200/1500 (F) quickly, and often, the metal will fail and crack .

Driver error is not a design flaw ........... even on a Ford .

Sounds like exhaust leak / broken stud / blown gasket etc . When you pull the turbos and manifolds , replace cooling hoses and o rings at same time .

Very good point on the tire size, I'm surprised Ford didn't use that as an excuse, unless of course he swapped back to OEM, I would have :rolleyes

Especially if he wasn't at least running the 3:55 ratio, I know the Raptor is 4:10 to better accommodate the taller tires. Oh yeah, his MPG will surely improve with the Raptor, especially considering how addicting "Sports Mode" is :)eek) :champagne: ( Test drives only at this point, but the kid who co-inhabits this aging body, really wants one :thumbsup )

I seriously doubt he changed tire sizes when he took it in for warranty work.

Interesting they didn't try to fault the over 5" difference in diameter tires, that's not a little by any means. Of course I don't know the circumstances of his engine failures, but that many in succession is just plain nuts.
So far in over five years and (only) 36K miles, mine's been flawless --- finger's crossed -- :D

But I'm older, don't abuse my rides, don't drive it like I stole it ( I reserve that for test rides :D), doesn't tow much weight far. In well over a half century of driving work trucks and my own, I've only blown up one --- my very first car, 57' Ford Wagon and that was the tranny :eek After dad made me R&R it, I drove it better after :rolleyes

Based off the symptoms, it sounds like it?s the gasket between the manifold and turbo. I was thinking perhaps it was missing. But it sounds like (from the video) you have a boost leak. Did you have a cel come on?

No CEL, going to spray some soapy water around the manifold and turbo and see where I get bubbles from.

Want to clear up my symptoms, I get the squealing and ticking on cold start, when it warms up the noise goes away at idle. However, after it is warm, and I do full throttle pulls the noise comes back.

Thanks for any help guys
