Exhaust Question Guys,

My boats tips come out right below the water line at the rear transom. It is approx the 3" tip with the Salisbury Flappers. See Below.
My problem is that when Im idling, the exhaust water is just splashing the complete rear of the boat, including the back deck and rear seat. Its expecially bad if the wind is blowing towards the boat. Is there any way to fix this? Is it the flappers? Would these help? http://www.cpperformance.com/p-16779-angle-cut-exhaust-clamp-on-flap-stainless-steel.aspx Thanks!

Chris

Thanks Kayotk. I already have internal flappers because the damn things clank like crazy in there. So just ditch the external? Is that safe since my boat sets so low in water? Thanks!

This IMO will not help

Yeah, whether the flappers are there or not, the exhaust is still at or below the water line. Not gonna help.

Merc apparently says that the exhaust must exit at or below the crankshaft centerline to minimize the chance of reversion????? (Warranty).. Anyone else understand it that way?

Seems backwards, but the amount of rise in the exhaust is the issue I guess, not where it exits.

Unless your exhaust exits under water, or under a swim step, you are going to get some of that crap spraying on the back.

I've had enough boats with different configurations to know that you pretty much can't stop it. Especially if the wind is at your transom or you are in reverse.

Gibson turn down mufflers would work.

Using s pipes and rerouting your exhaust under water would also do it. That's gonna be expensive.

I had these on my old jet bote, they worked well.. Just keep an eye on them, they're not bullet proof..

http://www.cpperformance.com/p-1257...style-rubber-replacement-exhaust-flapper.aspx

Those things break. They were on my boat along with externals. One of the internal butterflies didn't even make it the first season (brand new boat). Then the problem is to replace them you have to remove the exhaust tips from the transom and clean all the epoxy etc. and put on new stuff when replacing. Total pain in the butt or some good labor hours paid for at the mechanic. I just use the externals.

Other problem is out of sight, out of mind. If you use those then you have to make sure to check that flapper everytime you stop. The external you will just notice without making a point of it.

Mine had those and the externals as well. One of them blew out so I just tore off the other internal one with some channel locks. The metal pin is still mounted in there, but no flapper internally just the outside ones.

Mine throws some nasty spray all over the back of the boat. I've got mufflers with the external flappers right at the water level and its bad. If you're in the back seat you're getting a little wet. My solution is, I don't sit in the back seat. :D

Chris, maybe you might consider moving the exhaust above the water line, right below the white rub rail? That would eliminate that splashing issue and would sound really good too?;)

We have the exhaust above the water line, on a 25 cat. The swim steps do start to discolor over time from the heat, but other than that it looks and sounds great. Had it done at Teague, with switchable mufflers.:)

Thanks Pokey, I wish it was above the water line. There is just not alot of freeboard in the boat and Im sure it was put there for a reason. I would much rather it be up top. :thumbsup

I knew that was coming! :thumbsup It has an Eddie marine one and the drive looks brand new now. That pic was when I bought it. The stupid name is off the transom also. The previous owner just lost interest in the boat I guess towards the end.

Or, if you know a couple of 400 pound women, stick them on the back seat.....tips go under the water line, problem solved....now, wasn't that easy?? All this talk about if the tips are in or out...sheesh..who needs that?? Personally, I think the tips should always be in..wouldn't want to get a little spray in the face, would you?
