Anyone have any pointers?

I am looking to erect a flag pole on our property down by our dock.

There are so many choices (aluminum, fiberglass, one piece, sectional and height).

As to the height, I am looking at either a 20 or 25 foot.....

Does anyone have any experience they'd share with any of this, or places that you've dealt with for the materials?

Thanks in advance.....

You had me at... erect.

:D

Thanks for the recommendations (and keep them coming).

Not sure what the advantage of a telescoping pole would be for me. My plan is to put it up and leave it up. Do those of you with the telescoping ones ever lower them?

The biggest advantage is the reduced cost to manufacture as well as ship it to you......probably why they sell so many of these!!

My Parents have a one piece (or it was a one piece) that either the rope broke or the pully at the top, i dont recall but my dad and i had to cut the pole down towards the bottom in order to fix it. We than fabbed up a sleeve and thru bolted it to repair where we cut it. The telescoping ones sound like the hot ticket.

No except to change the flag or in extreme wind. Telescoping is nice because then there isn't a rope to get weathered and have to change out. Also nice when cementing in your base because you are only getting a 4 or 5 foot pole straight rather than 20 foot.

I made my own with chainlink fence post that I can take apart to service the top pulley and or halyard. I first used quality halyard rope then switched to stainless cable. Put it up Sept 14 2001. Flies 24/7 and stays fully lit at night.
When I changed to the cable the clasps stopped clanging on the pole, what you hear most is the flapping sounds.

I have two telescoping poles from polesandholders.com...
The oldest one (10 years +) was probably bent over 90 degrees from the wind in the desert last weekend.

Ive been considering a 20-25' telescoping one as well. Now that I got rid of the grass in the front yard it might be a good time.

Bought my on amazon, 25 footer i think, googled it and found out, 20 percent needs to be in concrete for high wind areas, set it up that way for Havasu house, hasn't moved an inch and we all know how windy it can gst

Well this project finally made it to the top of my list and I got a flagpole (my wife ordered me one for my birthday back in April).

She went with one of the companies mentioned here. The quality of the flag pole looks good, but their customer service is horrible. She ordered the pole on April 10th. After 2 weeks, she called to see what the delay was. They came up with some excuse and said it would be sent out the next Monday. After a few more weeks and several phone calls (and other excuses), the pole finally showed up on May 14th (1 day short of 5 weeks).... :grumble:

So my project this weekend is to jam this thing in the ground.... I will post pictures when I am done.

Just a heads up, flags that are flown 24/7 have to be illuminated at night by law.
