So after my last tire change, the stock jack broke. It was stuck and would not retract.

Think of getting a 'portable' floor jack for my full-size pick up... and for the boat trailer.

What does everyone use? I saw this a Sears, but most of the reviews are crap. It is a 2 1/4 ton jack. Saw similar items at Home Depot and Lowe's but these portable types with the carrying case just seem cheap.

I can always throw around a regular jack, but like the convenience of putting this under my rear bench seat.

I keep the car-quest or auto zone version of those in all my trucks. They aren't great but sure beat the alternative, and make it easy to jack up the tongues of my boat and dump trailers if I'm picking them up with a different truck / length of drop hitch in relation to whatever block of wood may or may not be under the trailer tongue jack. I always keep a little chock and a couple wood scraps too.

Scissors jack with a 12v (cig lighter plug type) impact wrench. Now you remove the lugs and jack the truck up with ease.:thumbsup

I have that same jack, got it for Christmas about 12 years ago. Always carry it when towing the boat, It's convenient having everything in one case is.

I personally think it's 4,500 lbs rating is a stretch, but I've used it to lift close to 6,000 lbs :yikes. Like you're supposed to do, as soon as I'm able too, I drop the vehicle or trailer on a jack stand, which I also carry. Plus cut down 2x4s, a 2x12, and a rail road tie.

I have had one of these styles of jacks for years. Obviously not intended for big jobs, but gets the job done on the road. Mine didn't come with a carrying case though.:thumbsdown One thing I will warn you is make sure you have it on the best solid ground you can find. Due to its narrow footprint, it will want to do a little 3 wheel motion on you if your not on decent ground.

My last tire change...

I have just a plain ol' stock pick up.

I meant truck size as you would find in a HD pickup. Main reason is they can get real low if your tire is completely flat or blow-out. I like Rabio's idea of adapting a 12 volt impact to operate the screw also.

Gotcha. So what type is this? This is what froze up on me a few weeks back. This is the stock jack. It lifted the truck, but would not come down. I eventually had to rock the truck and hit the jack to push to truck off the pivot :cool

I figure I can buy a better jack for less.

That's the screw style I mentioned, they are crap. You can find the scissor style at most parts outlets or go to a salvage yard. :thumbsup

Way safer to use the one you showed in the first post. I'd get the one w/ the case since you don't have a toolbox on the truck. The impact is cool and I do have one sometimes but a star wrench is easy to store and if you have rims with special lugs I'd have a little breaker bar with the socket on those in that truck. I've had enough flats I throw a spare in the bed of my truck on long tows with the boat so I don't have to un- bolt/lock and drop the spare on the trailer close to traffic. With the spare in the truck bed and that type jack and a star wrench you can change a trailer flat super quick.

This would be my suggestion. There are companies that makes skids for the bottom as well as mounting brackets to its securely mounted in your bed/box/cab floor or wherever.

Lots of options for a couple different Jacks here.

When I'm towing a boat I typically bring by jeep tool bag, bottle jack and a 6x6 piece of wood to drive the trailer onto if I need to change a flat.

I like floor jacks. Versatile and easy to use. Far safer than any OEM or bottle jack with a small footprint. Long handle keeps you back away and safer. Finding a place to store them is the issue.

I bought this for the boat and truck when on the road and keep a chunk of 6x6 with it. I also travel with an electric impact and sockets. Changing a tire on Rice in August should be done as quickly as possible.

Exactly.

Last flat, I had the luxury of pulling way off the 95 to change the tire. Had all the time in the world.

I've been looking for a portable floor jack as well. I looked on Amazon a few months back, there were some good options along with reviews. I still have the rock in my front yard that I found along I40 to assist in the trailer tire change.

A friend of mine has one of these in his auto repair shop that he loans out to customers. It has been used and abused for years and still works good. He was even surprised at how long it has lasted.

I got this one also but the next size down, 49 bucks i throw it in the back of the truck for river trips without a worry of being stole. Nice to have along with a 1/2" cordless impact for a quick Nascar tire change.

There is a Harbor Freight one block from my house. I'll go check it out this week... just want to get something before our next trip in few weeks. Home Depot is not that far away either...

Floor jack for home use.

Bottle jack for road use as they are small and easy to carry.

Yup i carry a 12 ton bottle jack in my truck and when i have my camper on it it takes a heavy duty floor jack to lift it for a tire change the bottle jack does it with ease.Theres also one i keep in the toyhauler too.

I carry an aluminum floor jack and a bottle jack along with several different chunks of wood blocking. but this is the only jack I've ever had to use and it works great. Just stick it under the axle and drive forward. I do use the floor jack as a back up under the axle once the drive on jack has lifted it up.

Once you change the tire, pull out the floor jack and then back up and the drive on jack will fall out.

Last flat, I had the luxury of pulling way off the 95 to change the tire. Had all the time in the world.

Our second or third trip up last year (when it was over 110) we had one go on the trailer half way up 95. I backed up to a wider spot close to where we stopped, and started wrestling with the truck jack and using the stock lug wrench on the trailer spare which had about 3" of useless thread above the nut (rusty and not finger tight), and this guy stops, gets out his floor jack and impact and has the whole thing changed for me in minutes. It was that trip that I had the bright idea to carry a jack, impact, breaker bar, sockets and everything else whether I was towing or not. We offered the guy money, beer, and i damn sure would have taken him out to dinner if we ran into him up there, but he would not accept. I would have gotten it done by myself, but it would have been a sweaty, time consuming pain in the ass.

That's the best around town. None of the hot rods or the wife's car (that originally came with runflats) have a spare or a jack, but I'm not waiting for hours in the middle of the desert to have a flat fixed.
