So FBW, what is the current badge number for a CHP new hire? If I recall correctly, they were approaching 10,000 in 1978.

Just saw one in Valencia. They blend in really good. Can barely see the emblem on the door until right beside it.

AZ has a lot more than that, I’ve seen all brands of truck, Tahoes, Expeditions, Teslas, 4 Runners, Altimas, V6 Chargers, scat pack Chargers, SS Camaros, 5.0 Mustangs, Malibus, and I’m sure I am forgetting some.

These are not the typical CA police package cars with no markings and steel wheels with antennas. They are all unmarked stocking looking with lights hidden in the OEM lights or in the blacked out windows. You would never know it’s a cop until the lights turn on.

P.S. I’ve only been here 9 months, I’m sure there is more.

Ford used the more the powerful engine in the CHP units than a civilian could buy, trouble was Ford coupled them up to a weak transmission.

I back the AZ units all the time, and they have some really cool and VERY sneaky cars. Havasu mostly sees the red Camaro and the blue mustang. No antennas and no external lighting or markings whatsoever.

CA law is in the process of being changed to allow fully *unmarked* units to be used for the purpose of traffic enforcement.

I talked to one of the guys who drives a Scat Pack Charger. He said his whole traffic unit drives them. They are currently in the process of swapping them out for SRT Durangos because of better ground clearance. He said they are trying to get Hellcat Durangos but the budget is looking like standard SRTs are all they can afford lol.

My Grandpa lives up in Prescott Valley and they have an unmarked truck with a lawnmower in the back🤣

When the unmarked law passes, CA peeps are going to be in for a rude awaking if they think a police package Durango with a ghosted emblem is hard to see…

Shit I’d take the truck with the lawnmower in the back. That made me legit lol.

My Next Door neighbor is an OC Sheriff. He told me a couple months back that all the unmarked are likely to get custom wheels, possibly wrapped, zero antennas showing, etc. No "Exempt" on the plate, etc.

I drive a diesel truck and get owned about 10x daily by some aggressive driver. I won't pull my Dump Trailer until 10 am and have it off my hitch by 2:00 pm. and I never used to feel this way about just making a living.

I liked it back in the day when Ca didn’t have radar. Except when they lied and said they paced you lol. Airplane was pretty sneaky then too but after being tagged twice I bought a scanner for in the truck and had all the freqs including car to car. Never got tagged again by the plane in Az or Cali.

Yup. Main problem I can see coming a mile away in Cali is explaining how the person running from you knew you were a cop in the completely unmarked patrol unit. I'm honestly not a huge fan of unmarked being used for Traffic Services... But It's not my deal to begin with so have at it.

The one thing I will say is if any unmarked unit got behind me, I'm not stopping until I've confirmed over 911 that it is a real Police Officer and not some psycho that ordered all the lights off amazon.

I will say it has changed my driving habits somewhat. I’ve already tried to back my California aggression off, but I also like to do a little pull every once in a while, these have now been limited to empty on ramps. Also, leading the pack on the freeway is now an absolute no no for me lol.

Apples and oranges, but my Badge Number at the Sheriff's Office is "11". They're currently issuing numbers in the 5-600s.

I think cars should be marked completely.. I don’t understand how it’s possibly legal that they aren’t?

Do you guys keep it sequential?

Our badge number will stay the same regardless of the rank we achieve. They send your actual badge out and they change the rank banner at the bottom. I know some / most departments issue different badges as you climb the ranks.

I was reacting more to Dave’s post about any markings. Are you saying, though, that the law is being changed in CA? If I remember correctly, it goes back to the 30s or so.

I guess I am too old school. A HUGE part of policing is visibility. Seeing marked units driving around in itself deters people. Departments should be required keep units marked unless surveillance type detail. I tell my wife don’t stop unless vehicle is marked. Move to right lane, hazards on and call 911 to confirm if stop is legit.

How are they supposed to make all that extra revenue if you can see them coming? 😁

Yeah but we aren’t real cops, so it’s fine.

Hot rod cop cars are nothing new. I remember back in 68-69 Downey PD got Galaxies with the 428 PI engine, which was essentially Cobra Jet engine.
I bought a Santa Monica PD unmarked car at a police auction. It was an early ‘70s Dodge Monaco with a 440 Magnum engine. That thing would lay stripes until you let off the gas.
Back in the day there was a rumor that the Sante FE Springs CHP had a “special “ highway interceptor that was capable of 150 mph.

Man if we got *ANY* of the revenue from these things we’d have way cooler cars than v6 explorers and chargers. 😒

I’m still pushing for 5% of any fines to go directly into our personal pockets. Imagine how 🌈safe🌈 the freeways would be…?

But that will be changing soon.
Been watching a lot of Forensic Files lately, the unmarked cruiser thing really makes me uncomfortable..

1969 Dodge Polara 440 mag.
My Dad bought one at the CHP auction. Painted it Lime Green...It was the 70's...
And gave it to my Mom. He had no idea what he had bought...
Are you kidding me...As a High School senior, I Fnn loved it!!!
Hey Mom, got a date tonight, can I borrow the car.
It would lay a Figure 11 down the street....... and........ It had a HUGE back seat.....
Even took it to the Prom.......Good times for sure.........

Hey, some of us have funded at least a month of retirement for some LEO'S. Some donate to starving kids in Africa, others to state and federal employees...one citation at a time ;)

Same here in oregon. Especially on I5. All kinds of crazy unmarked. A guy(sheriff) i built a house for had a challenger hellcat as his unmarked. Said they got it from a drug seizure with like 300mi on it.

Our badge number will stay the same regardless of the rank we achieve. They send your actual badge out and they change the rank banner at the bottom. I know some / most departments issue different badges as you climb the ranks.

When the Dept came out of the stone age and got computers, around 1987-'88, the computer generated new "Badge" (ID) numbers for all employees. The top numbers were, of course, issued to the Sheriff, Under Sheriff, Lieutenants, Sergeants, in that order. They issued the est of the numbers based on shift/unit assignments. Just so happened that the Boating Safety Unit was next on the list., so I ended up with a relatively low number. I kept that number as I advanced from Deputy to Sgt and then Lieutenant. When people are hired and entered, the computer issues their ID #s (civilian) & Badge #s (sworn/DOs).

I don't have my "Deputy" badge, as there was a re-design, due to a lawsuit. The guy who originally designed the Badge and Patch when the County split from Yuma in 1984, gave us license to use it free of charge. But after he passed on, the family copyrighted it and felt they should be paid. We said screw that and just redesigned and reissued everything. But they had to collect and destroy any Badges in the wild.

Then after 20 years, the past three Sheriffs somehow decided that we needed a new badge and patch design. For a department that was always so broke, it seems that throwing around thousands of dollars for redesign and badge/patch replacement every 4 years was a good way to spend funds. Not to mention the employees who had to pay out of pocket to have the old patches removed & new ones sewn on. Just to swell someone's ego.

The Sgt badge, top left, was the 2nd design and the others were the 3rd version. The top right badge was a special one year version to honor the Arizona Centennial (1912-2012).
