Looks like the boys returned back to the shop and the Motec guys came over and did a little read.
219.9 MPH . Radar gun are not accurate at all… There has to be a better way…

So with a lack of wheel sensors is it using GPS to get that speed?

The only way to get true MPH from the water is to factor in all existing parameters. Besides actual time between point A and point B, there is also river current speed and direction, plus wind speed and direction. Remember that when speed records are set on the water, a minimum of two passes are required in opposite directions. Throw in sea conditions, as pure glass will lower speeds, compared to mild chop, that will be faster, and then to major chop which will drop it again.

But either way, it was fucking fast.

Even at 215, they weren’t even close to the target speed.

Park the Charger on a Pontoon boat next year

I could get there on the CA side somehow. I’m sure of it.

I’ll pull some strings at the Landing and borrow the Tecopa

There the same chp on 163 every morning with his radar gun squeezed against his eye. Same place. Same time. Same dumb looking squinting one eye position.
He probably has time next year.

Sounds like he needs to switch to the binocular Lidar. So much easier on the eyes.

Bonneville- Two runs, opposite directions with an avg. of the two within a determined time. Measured through timing lights.

And ya 200 on radar or 215 off of GPS is hauling ass. No two ways about it.

We’ll see. But I doubt ever.

1) spirit of Qatar completed the 244 record on a longer course.
2) they were in a mystic. Only offshore cat specifically designed by a naval architect to run over 200 MPH. Skaters are bad ass race boats. They’re not designed to run over 200. There’s endless evidence of this via multiple high speed flips. I know the skater guys won’t like that statement, but it’s true.

Freedom 1 wants to beat 244mph? Buy a mystic, run more power.

Operator or equipment issue. I said it last year too. They need someone who operates radar for a living, and maybe a sponsor to loan the equipment ☺️👀

In the mid-late '90s, Kustom gave us a specialized Falcon Marine Radar unit to test, when they first prototyped them. Kinda' impractical, as the only speed regulated areas we had were "No Wake" zones. We did use it a few times with boats at night, hauling ass in low-no light conditions. While there weren't any "set" speed limits, we used it only to back up testimony, for "Speed greater than reasonable/prudent". Even then, it was only a way to shut up the defense attorney who would ultimately ask "How fast was my client going?" Responding "I recorded him on radar doing 68 MPH" beats responding "I don't know", all day long.

The only thing I ever regularly used it for was checking the speed of the Desert Storm or Jokers Wild boats heading into the first stop at Havasu Springs. They've come a long way since I first recorded speed on one at 130 MPH.

Don’t think they need any more power. Did you see how much it was still pulling at 210?!

Oh yeah, They have gobs of power for sure. But They were at the end of the course at 210, or actually their official speed was 201 at the end of the course. They technically didn’t even beat Gary’s record.

Theyre gonna need more power to get there faster.

Maybe a bigger prop. 😁

The throttle man never "hit it"...he was advancing the throttles until things went wrong. I didn't see the tachs.....but with 4000hp on each side, that's likely to make the transmissions not scatter. That boat was plenty capable of accelerating faster than it did....if the driveline could hang onto it....which it did, so they can push it harder next round.

We’ll see. Looked to me like they nailed it pretty good. I don’t think it’s capable of 245 mph in that short of a course, it would have to accelerate almost as hard as a drag boat. Just my opinion. Not to mention not safe in that boat.

10k HP is a lot. But it wasn’t enough to even beat Gary’s number.

What will it take for American Ethanol to do it without going turbine power?

I don’t know. But they havent come close either with their 12k HP from 4 motors.
221 Google says. I think the record is 244? That seems close to me. But I dont what another 23mph would take as far as power.

Tell us how you really feel tank. 😆

lol

I’m not trying to be a dick. I’m just having a conversation. Sometimes it’s hard to read tone.

I think it’s cool they’re attempting it. I just think it’s a fools errand. And I think they’re lucky to be alive.

I also think the only one who’s really got a shot is Steve Curtis and the dude that just bought spirit of Qatar. They’re modifying the boat, lightening it up and planning on getting more power out of the turbines in that mystic. They are true contenders.

It’s getting there but at those speeds on that course? 24 mph more is HUUUUUUGE.

I’m a big fan of cosker and consider him a friend. He throttles American Ethenol and if there’s anyone I’d like to see break the Qatar record, it’s him. I mean, it is his boat (he built and owns mystic) but it’d be nice to see him in the record boat.

Excuse my lack of research. Been a long night. Was Quatar a longer course and was it a rolling start? Mystics are amazing performers as well as Skaters. Never will be able to own either. Impressed by all the high perforning boats and the incredible engineering and efforts that go into designing them. As well as the balls it takes to run them. At soon to be 54, it hurts when something goes wrong! Being from NE and having met Mike Fiore and his dad and big fan of OL , tragic to see these accidents. i appreciate the passion and drive. I agree though, without some serious efforts, Money and teh science to achieve the 244 in these style boats will stand for a while longer.

They both had rolling starts. It was a mile long course when the record was set. It's now 3/4 of a mile.

I think it will happen. I hope I'm watching when it does..

I can't wait for the first AI boat to challenge the shootout.
