If that is the boat I think it is, I have seen it several times in those Haulover videos... so it goes through a lot.

That was the first 47 Apache built and was Ben Kramer’s personal boat. Just went through a full refit and rebuild by JT and crew at TNT. It broke out in the ocean not in the cut and it’s debatable if that’s repairable. I will say, never seen an Apache break like that.

@Tank is there an LCE for these types of boats or should they essentially last forever?

i always thought once laid up they should be good to go. I mean ex race boats that have been beat to shit year after year and get all blown out like a retired prostitute probably have some weakness in em. But this particular boat only ran one race and then Kramer was arrested. Boat was seized by the feds until Lorne leibel (racecar driver) bought it in the 90’s. Then sold it to a guy in jersey and then leibel Bought it back from him after 17 years. Leibel took it directly to Johnny to be restored. It was just competed earlier this year. My point is this boat wasn’t really raced, sat many years and then wasn’t beat on ever. Just random to have it break that gnarly. Only boat ive seen break like that was that Donzi that went off the 20’ wave in northern cal.

I don’t really see why it broke frankly. All of the water I saw that thing runnin in wasnt shit for that big ol resin bucket. And there’s plenty of offshore boats from the 70’s and 80’s still putting the hurt to the ocean swells 40 years later.

Everything has a life span. Be it an air frame, or a boat hull. Years and years of poundi in an offshore environment will take its toll.

You’d think it would break farther forward, where the pounding takes place! I guess with a lot of weight in the rear and a lot of leverage with the boat standing on the props off and on when launching takes a toll

When I first saw that video before the pics of the hull crack I did think to myself, they’re running that thing way to loose. Coming down on the aft too much. Needs to run more tab and let that big ol deck do the work of cutting through the swell. That may have had something to do with it actually.

Drop some tab and bring them drives in a bit. Lay that big ass nose down.

I mean this is what these things were built for to run like this. For years. Specifically built to be beat on like this. Starts getting good at around 3 minutes when ol Ives nearly stuffs it. 😬😬

Thanks for reminding me. Ben still owes me a few hundred bucks for a job I did for him about 35 years ago. Should I turn it over to collection?

That's the first fracture I've ever heard of with ANY Apache. I'll bet this one can and will be repaired. The technological improvements in resins and materials will only make the hull stronger than it originally was. There is a LOT of talent in the South Florida boat building (And repair), community. 👍

There’s a difference in running a boat hard and running a boat stupid, from the videos I’ve watched this boat has been run stupid through the inlet, probably because there are cameras there. When you go through trimmed to the moon on a big day you obviously don’t understand the point of having a 47’ long boat. Sad to see a piece of Offshore history abused like this, my guess is that it will get plated like Nordskogs Fountain.

Most here who ran in the ocean experienced what it's called bow acceleration. At high speed with the bow come up high over a roller and slamming down causing the most stress on the forward section, shuddering the entire hull and bones of the occupants.
Impact pressures on the forward sections can reach 5000 lbs per #foot and 12 G's, making your stored anchor in the bow 13 times heavier. Greatest pressures are 3-5 feet from the bow to the entry door bulkhead to the cabin. Something got to give, running a high speed boat constantly. One time, we had a 25 Warlock busted stringers and cracked hull, coming out from Vancouver harbour during poker run. There some nasty chop coming out under the Lions Gate bridge heading to English Bay when the tide coming in. Only boat ever going fast there was the 42 OL in our group.

Tank, thanks for posting that video - my all time favorite boating video. I’ve never had a chance to do it, but I’d be willing to pay big to go for a ride like that. Had a friend that had a tiger, but I never got a ride. The 47 Apache is latterly world famous - hope the owner has the pockets to fix it

Man that Donzi jump always made my heart stop .... all of our nightmares. But that hull deserved to crack after that landing..... woulda loved to see the hit that cracked this big boy. didn't see anything coming/ going that severe. Dude knows what he's doing. Did look like those outside waters were gnarly though. Woulda been a good day to stay in and watch sports.

Man that term "Shudder" is well used..... couple times my 30' came down and shuddered for sure! Nasty sensation.... I bet the longer boats have even more flex..... whew.

I could almost feel the boat wanting to crack watching him coming into the inlet. That's a ton of heavy nose being flexed in the air like a fulcrum

The boat is a "light" layup supposedly. @ 1:08.
