I am not a basketball fan in general but I did recognize his greatness and demand for performance from himself and others. Has Shaq not been lazy, causing fighting with Kobe, the Lakers could have won 10 championships in a row.

It seems his wife wasn't on board, I hope the kids were home as well.
I would hope they are set for life.

Just saw. What a total bummer! I always admired Kobe. Such a great person.

My favorite player. I feel really bad for his wife and kids. I got to watch him play live a couple of times. Intense dude.

RIP Terrible tragedy

CALABASAS, Calif. – Former NBA superstar Kobe Bryant has died in a helicopter crash in California, Local 10 has confirmed.

Five people were on board when the helicopter went down near Calabasas this morning.

Bryant’s wife Vanessa was reportedly not on the helicopter, according to TMZ. It’s not known who else was aboard the helicopter during the flight, or where it was headed.

Devastating news for my family. We were huge fans of Kobe. [emoji22][emoji22][emoji22]

Same here. I regularly listen to all his old interviews on YouTube while I drive. I always got something out of just hearing him talk. :(

RIP to a Laker great.

One of my favorite Laker memories was the 2000 comeback in game 7 vs. Portland.

Too soon, and I hope his family finds peace.

Fox News via kabc just showed live and the entire tail section appears to be pretty much in one piece sans tail rotor, still smoldering.

Copter dudes It almost looks like they tried
214E6993-2CDB-4EBA-B24F-B354D67DD9C4.jpeg
to auto rotating and I came down nose first as opposed to just going into the side of the mountain in fog. Just an observation.

I guess the next question is who are the unfortunate other four people in the airship the most interesting who was the pilot, which is very often retired law-enforcement with usually in excess of 10,000 hours.

Isn't his Mamba Academy in that area?

I hope some of his kids weren’t with him going to a workout or a weekend tourney there???

ABC's cut away from the pro bowl said that 4 of his daughters were believed to be on the chopper with him but that doesn't make sense with only 5 decreased unless Kobe was a pilot?

Supposedly it was a Sikorsky S-76, thats a very large, Helio with 2 turbines. I want to say the coast guard versions had a 12k# capacity and were like 7k dry.

Surreal...

He was no stranger to helicopters, from what I understand he commuted to their El Segundo practice facility and Staples Center in a chopper.

Flying is probably not any harder than heart surgery. After doing it for years it becomes routine. Until something goes wrong!

from TMZ

12:35 PM PT -- Kobe's daughter Gianna Maria -- aka GiGi -- was also on board the helicopter and died in the crash ... reps for Kobe tell TMZ Sports. She was 13.

We're told they were on their way to the Mamba Academy for a basketball practice when the crash occurred. The Academy is in nearby Thousand Oaks.
