Has anyone shortened a race ski to make it into a play/training ski? What were the results? I have a DC that I bought used and never got bindings on it, ended up buying a complete Maha and skiing on that in the last few Grassroots races.

If I don't sell the DC I was thinking of shortening it to 360 length, figure 68" to 70", to ski on Parker when it's rough and/or the ocean. Thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks!

We used to cut down Magnums before the Vert air was made and I even have a mini mag which was only about 48-50". These were used for a different type of "play' though.

my old ski? thats a shame. ha. i actually considered this before buying my trainer ski, i would only cut off a few inches and try to match a dc trainer. especially for the ocean. i would go 72 or 73 inches. and set the bindings further back then usual. it will be small enough to cut and jump with but hold up better in the rough then a 360.

Yep, your old ski.;) So doing some math it looks like the DC Trainer is 72.8". Any idea if it is a flat bottom or if it is concave?

Mahas making a new 74 so the length everyone is taliking about seems right. I cut down an older Longboard to 72, never got the binding placement right and bought an 88... just sits in the rafters now and will make a good bookshelf someday!!!!!!!!!

Sorry if this is a dumb question but why the need for a trainer ski? Wouldn't it be better to train on the ski you race with?

the smaller ski helps you focus on balance and technique. after a while the race ski begins to feel like a cruiser unless your really pushing your self, which most of the time in practice your not. skiing on a 72 inch ski at 65 is a work out. 65 on a race ski is a cruise in smooth water. you can train on shorter 360s and vertical airs, the smaller the ski the better but for the sake of comfort the 72 feels nice in just about anything.. just my opinion of it makes sense.

In other words the short ski gives you a better workout on technique and strength so when you get on the longboard it will seem easier?

Another very important point is that training on a race ski at racing speeds is a lot more costly. Depending on a skier's ability and water conditions, it might mean using a "race" boat, which also usually means racing gas.

On the other hand, if you train with a shorter ski, and short rope, and constantly cut across the wake, you get a workout that costs less money, still teaches balance and reactions, and is also probably safer on crowded water.

A new racer needs a certain amount of time on a race ski, but I have seen guys trying to "train" at 40 mph or less on a race ski, and not really learn anything,, nor do they get a workout.

As I told you on the phone earlier, I cut down an 81" DC years ago to 70" to race the Nationals at Clear Lake in Pro Social class. I also ended up cutting the sides similar to the Maha race skis so it would not "drag" so badly in the turns when I used it to train. It's a workable trainer, was very stable but heavy. Might have helped with developing leg muscles due to the extra weight. I ended up selling it to a Pro Social skier that I observed for some years later,, he cleaned up with it the year he raced that class!

Justin...DC's trainer is a flat bottom and it is thinner than a race ski...they are a sweet ski that is sure. And you're right 72.8" long
