the wife and i are kicking around the idea of heading out for maui for our anniversary and my birthday in the middle of july. we were gonna go on a cruise, but we ditched that idea. we will be getting the maui book for some extra help if we decide to go.

i know some boardmembers have been before ... so give me ideas. it'll fit in perfect for the nautical trip. we'll get home and then two weeks later we'll be at the river:champagne:

where to go?

things to see?

places to eat?

how is the wind on the northern section of the island?

for example, on the big island, there is a section in the southwestern area of the island where it is windy all the time. thats just how it is in that area.

North Shore, Paia.

Check out this place

http://www.mamasfishhouse.com/

We stay here and love it. On the road to Hana. Off the beaten path. Not touristy. Bitchen part of the Island.

Mama's is our place to go for lunch every trip. Less money than dinner and WAY more of a view. You can't see the view at night...keep that in mind. :)

Mid-July is going to be BUSY, it's going to be tough to find room at the pools, keep that in mind. If you splurge for some of the more upscale/expensive places, it's not as bad. Remember, school is out.

Your best bet might be renting someone's timeshare. You'll have a kitchen and MUCH more room and usually you have laundry that can come in handy. I know there's a guy here on the boards that rents a place out, he might be able to help you.

Have fun! I'm fricken jealous....that would be a great way to celebrate our 2 year anny of getting married there.....another Maui trip...in July.....maybe I can win the lottery this month.

Kaanapali is nice. We rent a condo at Whaler's Village when we go. Nice area and you can just jump on boats from the beach for tours, diving etc. The Hula Grill is a great spot for drinks - barefoot bar style...:thumbsup:champagne:

Windward is more North Eastern. You'll get a little rain, but usually only passing. If you like the old town feel, Paia is awesome. And Moma's has awesome fresh fish.

love the old town feel:thumbsup

I've only been to Kaanapali and Napili. Kaanapali is nice but too resortish. Napili was awesome. Great beach in a cove and very mellow and relaxing. A couple great restaraunts there too. Both are close to Lahaina which is fun to spend the day at. Lots of bars and places to eat. We also ate at Roy's while we were there. Great food and make sure to order the chocolate dessert thingy. What ever it is its awesome.

Kaanapali and Napili are the best. Mama's is good for a day trip but I wouldn't stay over there....very windy (good for wind surfing).

A day trip to Hana is a beautiful drive....not good if anyone gets car sick....long and winding road, but a beautiful trip.

Going up the volcano is cool!

Some days, just do nothing but sitting on a cool beach and snorkle....

:thumbsup

Napili has a great beach for Snorkeling. Great reef with lots of fish. And the occasional turtle and set of dolphins cruise by. :thumbsup:D

If you pick a resort with the Dolphins and water slides you will pay through the nose. They bend you over, lube you up and in goes a fish hook and razor blade covered broomstick.

Best deals are on nice resorts on the beach without too many gimmicks on the hotel grounds.

We never try and go cheap. Cooking your own can be false economy in Hawaii.
Buying food at the local markets is almost double to triple what you would pay here.

Find a few casual restaurants ya like and hit them a few times each.
Consider fast food instead of cooking your own.

If you choose Napili we loved staying at the Napili kai. Kinda has that old Hawaiian charm to it. They have studio condo rooms all with ocean views. They even have some that are walk out of your room onto the beach rooms but they didn't have a/c so we chose an a/c room. Still a great view and only a couple steps further to the beach. Also we booked the package on Expedia and got a pretty good deal. Flight, 6 nights, and rental car for $1500/person.

I have 8 time shares at the Kaanapali beach club, it's north of lahaina, it used to be the embassy suites over there. It's low on gimmicks, under new ownership, and all rooms are being newly renovated. Look on craigslist, and Ebay for people selling off their time, sometimes people only want their maintenance money back, thats the way to go on the cheap. get your tickets soon, right now is actually the best time to be there, it's whale season, and they go crazy all day.

I'm heading to Maui on the 11th for 8 days. Got a good deal also, $1050 for air, condo, car (per person). If you golf there are some really nice courses there that are a "must do" (Kapalua and Wailea). The sunrise, downhill bike cruise is GREAT! It's cold at the top of the volcanoe in the early am, but you end up right on the beach around noon and stop for a good breakfast / brunch along the way. There is a "new" zipline near Napili / Kapalua that is fun also (has a weight limit of 220lbs though). Mama's is normally good, but I had a really bad experience there the last time we went (a couple of years ago). If you go there try the Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi - WOW! There is great snorkeling on Maui - Blackrock, La Pereuse Bay, Napili are some of the best. Hope you have fun!

There's a Costco by the airport for liquor, cereal, etc. Get reservations in advance for the Zip Line. Ditto the 4:00 am morning bike ride down from the volcano. Kihei is always sunny and there's a good beach by the Wailea Marriott and around the bend I always find sea turtles when snorkeling. You may also wish to consider a full day scuba trip to the crater where you can dive 30 feet without certification. Golf is cheaper at Pukilani (sic) in the valley or at Makena and both are decent courses. If renting a Harley or sports car be advised you really can't exceed 50 mph anywhere on the Island and can encounter traffic at any given time. Concur with the Blackrock and road to Hana (intentionally get lost looking for the seven pools if you like to hike and find your own private water falls) suggestions. Aloha!

I really like the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, pricey but they have everything you need there and it is a beautiful resort. Do the Road to Hana the back way from Waliea its a full day with stops. Lahaina is good for a couple of hours very touristy. For a great show and dinner style Luau go to the Old Lahaina Luau or The Feast at Lele separate table seating and better drinks at The Feast but a better show at OLL. Also a very fun day adventure would be a Triology sail over to Lanai and do some snorkeling. I have been on this trip 3 times and never had enough wind to sail but its still fun - O and the cina-buns are awesome.

she has been looking at areas in lahaina.:thumbsup

Try the Royal Lahina, Old shity cottages on the beach. The location is perfect & price is right. One of the best beaches in Maui is about 100 yds. from your door. If your loking for a 5 star room this isn't it as far as rooms , everthing else is nice. If your looking for a pool, tiki bar & awsome beach right out your door check it out.

Wife and I got married on Kaanapauli golf course 16 years ago. Lahaina is touristy but still cool. We were eating breakfast next to the beach and John and Laurie Force came in w/ 3 little girls (back then). Nobody but me knew who they were. Would like to go back, wife wants to go to Kaui, but lottery hasn't hit yet.

I just got back from a week long trip in Maui - The weather was great and it was good to get away fomr things for a while. We had our 18 month old daughter with us, so we had some limitations on what we could do but it was still a great time. We stayed at the Honua Kai condos just on the North end of Kaanapali beach.

For casual meals, check out Aloha Mixed Plate next to Old Lahaina Luau - It's basic meat and rice food, but it's pretty tasty and th elocation is right on the sand. We also thought the food at Maui Tacos was good for a casual place.

For better food, check out Hula Grill, PacificO, or Sansei if you like sushi.

Cheeseburger in Paradise is a good breakfast and lunch spot, and there are a bunch of places on Front St in Lahaina as well.

We took a drive around the Napili coast N Kaanapali and it was pretty cool. The road winds around quite a bit like the road to Hana, but it's not a crowded and there were some great ocean views.

Have a good trip.

I almost forgot - Definitely check out the Maui Brewing Company - Great beer and decent food - The menu is similar to what they server at the Yardhouse.

Maui Brewing Co has a great IPA and Coconut Porter.. If you don't go to the restaurant to get it on tap, at least pick up a few and give them a try. :thumbsup

thats awesome. we like to eat all kinds of different meals. plate lunch is so basic, but it tastes so good. the best plate lunch that i have had was on the big island. that is our favorite island. been there twice, got married there, and we plan on moving there sometime in our lives. my wife has been to maui before but doesn't really remember much of it.

do you have any pics from your trip that you could share?

I also just got back from 8 days on Maui - had great weather and a lot of fun! We stayed at the Polynesian Shores in Kahana. We took the ferry over to Lanaii and rented a jeep over there. Beat the snot out of us (and the jeep), but some some great beaches and wildlife (turkeys and deer). Golfed at Pukalani and Wailea, fantastic views. Had some of the best snorkeling ever at Honolua Bay. Drove around the north side of the island for the first time - loved that single wide, twisty, blind corners drive - but the views were incredible! Ate some good food at Cheeseburger in Paradise (try their Trouble in Paradise drink!), Maui Brewing Co, Mama's Ribs and Rotisserie, RB's Black Angus (not the chain), Maui Tacos. Met some cool peeps at the condo and one of the guys played guitar and made up songs on the fly - nice to have talent!

I have never been to Hawaii, my son's have a few times and stayed at the Grand Wailea. They both highly recommend eating at Humuhumunukunukuapua'a.
(hoo-moo hoo-moo noo-koo noo-koo ah poo ah ah)

O.K., well they didn't highly recommend it, I just think it's funny to say. They did say it was good though!
(that is the name of the official state fish of Hawaii)

I book vacations to Maui every week and spend 4 to 6 weeks there every year, so I could probably write a book of recommendations. But hey somebody else already did that and did a better job too...It's called called Maui Revealed, by Wizard Publications. You can buy at Amazon for cheap and it should be required reading for all first time visitors to Maui.

Given where you are staying in Lahaina, here are a few specific recommendations...

• As other's have mentioned, the beach is great at Kaanapali. We like to set up near Black Rock (at the Sheraton) because the snorkeling in that area is good and it's fun to watch the cliff jumpers. There is a small public parking garage, right next to the Kaanapali Beach Hotel on the Sheraton side, but there are only a few spots and it's always full so get there early. Otherwise you have a long walk or have to take the shuttle from Lahaina.

• If you go up to beautiful beaches of Kapalua, Slaughterhouse Bay and Honolua Bay it's best to go early. The trade winds (and sometimes trade showers) come up on that side of the island almost every afternoon.

• Don't miss breakfast at the Gazebo Restaurant in Naplili. There's usually a line but everything is good, especially the banana mac nut pancakes.

• As other have mentioned the road to Hana is long and windy, not great if you get carsick, and is a really long day from your side of the island. When we go, here is what we like to do; Get up as early as we can and head straight for Hana without stopping. This beats the traffic and we go straight to Seven Sacred Pools (Oheo Gulch) before anyone else arrives. This is one of the most beautiful places you will ever see - if you get there before the crowds and tour buses arrive. After a nice swim, we head back into Hana Town for lunch, then over to the Red Sand Beach to relax. Now we are rested and ready for the drive home and can make as many stops as we like on the waterfalls, etc along the way at a leisurely place.

• Don't miss the beachs in South Maui in the Wailea Makena area. If you like a scene, Wailea Beach is fun and you can usually spot a celeb or two and the paparazzi out doing their thing. We like Big Beach (Makena) as it is the largest undeveloped, and arguably the nicest, beach on the island. (just watch out for the killer rip tides and shore pound). Little Beach, next door, is Maui's clothing optional beach, and a real scene on Sundays when they have the drum circle and fire dancing. The fire dancing starts around sunset and can be the best free show on the island, depending on who is there that week. Some of the firedancers and hula girls from the luau shows sometimes show up. (warning - if you have a low tolerance for wanna be hippies and patchouli oil, this is not the place for you).

• While in the Makena area, hit up one of the Jawz trucks on the side of the road for fish tacos and a shave ice. (It might not be as good as it used to be, but it's still a Maui tradition!)

Have a great time...Maui No ka Oi!!
