That's what we are putting in our new boat I'm interested in this thread. All I really know is it's 380hp and replaced the 496. And I think runs on 87 from what I read but I'm not 100% on that

I'm no expert but I hear it's much better than a 496. It's a 502 block with aluminum heads, and actually comes out of Merc Racing, not Mercruiser. Hear it's a great engine as is but has the quality to handle mods, which is usually not recommended for the 496.

Yes 502 block at 4.7x4.0 bore/stroke. 8.75:1 compression... 87 octane.

I think this is going to be a really nice motor

With catalytic converters?? Btw pretty sure carb compliance fucks you on upgrades as well. :(.

The new 496HO is 430 horse and comes out of Mercruiser. You have to bump up to the 520 (or more) for Merc Racing.

There's a link on the bottom of page 1 or top of page 2 of the "Merc 520" thread that breaks some of the engines down.

Those regs didn't seem to stop the performance aftermarket for cars. With no smog checks on boats, I don't think it would be a huge issue?

X2.. Since you don't have to answer to anyone, why should it matter after it's sold new?

If it's anything like the 496HO leave it stock and it will live forever. Turn the key and enjoy.

Exactly what it is.

This engine is nothing like a 496, much better, and although it is a Mercruiser several magazines have stated it is actually built at Merc Racing because it is so similar to 520 and the 525...
Don't get me wrong the 496 is a pretty good engine, it's what I'm running with no problems, but to the best of my knowledge that block was purchased from GM and marinized, never touched inside. This new 502 is assembled by Merc, and a totally different motor.

From what I can tell after first time out in the new boat ,It sounds better than the 496 did.
Haven't really opened it up yet, still breaking it in .

How long has this motor been available. I know makers are using it now since the 496 is no longer available, but how new is this motor. Has it been around for a while?

Been available since 2010 which is the year of the boat we are looking at. Why haven't the builders been using it more over the past couple years. Seems like most boats that have been built in the last 3-4 years have a 496.

Going into the fourth year with ours.
Excellent performance, super reliable.
No cat issues.
Ya can't run them tougher than we do on the ocean.

Their should be no boats with 496 unless the manufacture had some motors in inventory. Or they got some good pricing from Merc. Everything moving forward should have the 8.2. I wouldn't worry about either motor they are very reliable.

Thanks. I know this boat is a 2010 but I have also seen an 11 with a 496 so maybe at the time it was just a personal preference of he person building the boat.

This boat is a 28 conquest top cat 2. Probably about a 65 mph boat? That's all we are really looking for.
