Okay, gettin close to rebuilding my 350 tbi that's in my blazer. It's a work in progress with the tahoe interior done, suspension almost done, motor next and paint will be last(Kevin at KMG will be doing the paint).

I'm looking for a good builder here in San Diego that is familiar with the aftermarket fuel injection systems. It's an AZ vehichle so no smog needs. I want something around 350hp to the wheels.

A builder that stands behind their work and does awesome work. Whatcha got!?

Too bad I am not a bit closer, I know I could put together something nice for you. If you are going to an aftermarket injection system, are you going to put a stroker crank in it for more cubic inches?

Yep, I'm planning on using the 350ci that's in it right now. It's a factory motor from 1990 w 178k on it. I was thinking more cubic inches for the torque and towing my daytona a couple times per year. Where are you?

I heard Ed passed away a few years ago, they are still in business I guess? They built a motor for one of my dad's vettes back in the 80's. I remember Ed racing at Cajon speedway in a tux!

Yes Steve, good old Ed did pass away many years ago now. Great guy. Gary was and still is the engine assembler there. He has been there for ever. He is like Ed, just a great guy and awsome to work with. He just did another engine for me last week and will be doing another for me next week. You won't find a easier guy to do business with when doing an engine. Very open and easy to talk to unlike most. You will not be disappointed.

Smiling Ed Hale was how they announced him!

Hey Barry, I got the same motor in my '87 Chevy thats got a ton of miles on it. I'm starting to think I should start putting together parts for a rebuild on it since I know its gonna need it soon. Mine is a smog car though and I plan on keeping the TBI fuel injection. Do you know what I can get away with with the smog guys to get a little more power out of it? I know I'm limited but I'm also not looking for 400hp. I was thinking more like 250-275hp. Stock is a whopping 195hp I believe.

Barry is in Glendora. He rebuilt an engine for me (468 BBC blower motor) and has done many for other board members. Good work at very fair prices. :thumbsup

IMO...don't waste your time with that motor. Making it a 383 with the TBI and stock heads will gain you very little and the custom chip for the TBI is pricey too.

Option 1 - Get a COMPLETE 6.0 out of a newer chevy it puts out 300 HP stock and with a simple off the shelf chip, headers, and air cleaner will go to about 425. Mine is a gas hog but pulls almost as well as my 2005 Dodge/ Cummins. You can get this setup for about $3000.00 and the install is really simple.

Option 2 - If you really want to stick with the old 5.7, get a COMPLETE motor out of a 1997 - 2001 truck or SUV...they are Port Injected with the aluminum Vortech heads and have the modern coil pack ignition. They too put out 300 HP stock and actually get great mileage in stock trim. The downside is this old technology does not have the CHEAP off the shelf chips and other hotrod parts available that the LS motors do. Either of these two options will get you more HP, and better mileage for way less $$$$$ than building a TBI motor into something decent. Just my 2 centavos....good luck with the upgrade!

I was thinking Edlebrock heads and injection, but it is starting to get up there in price! I really don't want to spend 8k on a motor. I like the 6.0 idea out of a new chevy. Maybe I can find a shop around san diego that has done a few of them already.

I know there isn't a ton that can be done,,maybe the Edelbrock manifold and a few other things that I have been thinking about. Got a feeling we could find a few extra hp somewhere.

I have been offered a free 1985 Corvette, less engine, and I haven't gotten too excited since I could not do much of an engine build for it in California.

Many shops in Cali will not do these types of swaps because it is "technically" illegal to modify the emissions system with a motor swap unless you have the shop complete the "approved" swap and take it to the referee....which obviously you do not need being an AZ truck.. Perhaps a shop in Phx or Havasu if you are not willing to tackle it yourself. FWIW I did the edelbrock heads and injection upgrade on a TBI 454 and it was a big disappointment, didn't pull that much better and then burnt the valves out of one cylinder with less than 8000 miles on it. The TBI is known to get lean on occasion during prolonged periods of towing. I would convert to the 6.0 and never look back. I have one with 137K on it and it pulls like a freight train.

I considered a stock rebuild with a mild cam upgrade and Vortech heads then get into some tuning on it but it requires a lot of work to get the egr to work properly with those heads. My other option was the same thing but with the late 80's corvette heads (I believe they're the L98 heads or something like that.) That combination and a good tune on a chassis dyno with a smog legal header should get a 50-60hp gain I would imagine. Like I said, not looking for an extra 100-200hp but just a little more than stock. It's my daily driver and I wanna run 87 octane so I don't have a whole lot of options.
