My beloved “Money Maker” work truck finally took a dump! It has 242,000 miles been ticking for 2 -3 years.

2005 Chevy 2500 HD contractor body w/ 6.0 gas motor - It was my 1st new car /truck I ever bought November 2004, I paid $31,000 city Chevrolet in San Diego
last week the stock plastic radiator took a dump and I replaced it w/ a metal one, new belt, hoses and all fluids swapped out - Brakes rear diff etc

So today heading in to work - it gave out and shit the bed! I don’t have a hole in the motor and all that new oil is still inside.

School me on a motor swap !! Looking to keep the truck for another 5 - 6 years, transmission was replaced not that long ago, Don’t want a new truck payment

anyone have a hook up? For a GM crate motor

are the Jegs, Jasper reman long blocks any good?

Whats a budget for motor, new bolt ons - starter ,WP, alternator etc and labor, I’m in San Diego area.

Thank you in advance for your input !!

I would buy a NEW (not reman) from GM. Engine swap in your driveway is a weekend job.
Do you think there would be a price difference from buying a new motor Here or in Havasu ?

dunno. GMPartsGiant.com lists it at just under $6K. Walking up the dealer counter you're gonna get hit a lot harder I'd imagine. go there, key in your VIN and find the right part number...then call around and see what you can do as far as pricing.

This place appears to be way cheaper than Scoggin Dickey or the other "go to" online GM parts places, not sure if it's a legit price but worth checking out.
$5100 - GM Reman 6.0, 02-07 LQ9
$5700 - GM Reman 6.0, 02-07 LQ4

Yours went early I have driven 2 of them over 300k. The 05 3500 flatbed went about 335k think oil pump failure killed it. I had it til 330k and in morning I let it warm up til pressure rose to normal next guy had it was brainless. Personally I’d look into getting it rebuilt and upgrade some stuff.

Second one 13 2500hd 8 ft flatbed had around 330k on it when I left company it was still solid no issues. Did have trans changed at 260k and radiator I think 250k.

My personal truck is a 04 has 263k on it. When it comes to engine I may pull and rebuild it. I have the skills to do so and while at it may swap out cam for more torque.

I'd just grab a pullout and check the rockers for play real quick. $1500 vs $6000 unless the tax deduction works in your favor? FYI, your pullout is still worth money unless it's windowed.

Your engine is 24x, any 24x engine will work. So if you want a 5.3 for some reason it will work fine.

Check Craigslist in LA/IE. There is a seller up in the high desert who has a selection of used LS motors. I would give them a look as the pricing is half of what you're considering. I haven't personally bought anything from them, but they've run the ad for quite awhile now, so.....

Especially for a boneyard motor, this is great advice. Everyone wants the 6.0, but the 5.3s are a dime a dozen.

Use the money saved to wake it up with a cam.

Yesterday we were headed to Havasu for the weekend

So before we hit the road I had my mechanic buy the Jasper motor
and
My truck will be back on the road next Friday ….

If I was On the Ball….
I would have asked for guidance before the motor popped and I could have had one sitting and ready to drop in….

Its been ticking for a few years….

While jasper has some bad ones every now and then I've had great luck with their stuff as a DIY person.... back when I was into cars vs boat's I've also made absolutely stupid power with junkyard 6.0's...they love a little boost and are dirt cheap.

I had a 6.2 that locked up at 80k miles. I had Wilson and Bell in Rancho Cucamonga put in a Gm 6.2 replacement about a year ago. I’ve heard nothing but bad things about the Jasper. Jaspers weren’t available at the time anyways.

The GM motor was about 11- 12k installed and came with a 100k mile warranty. It ran great for about 15k miles until the truck was recently rear ended/ totaled.

I do it all over again if I had too. GMC Dealer was about 3k more.

I figured its all thru my mechanic and His shop they have a 3 year 100K warranty on the motor

so if I have any issues I just drop it off and let them handle it

Yup, our 05 service body was stolen in 22 with 318k. I was laughing because of the mileage.
Still miss it...

I don't mean to hijack, but the right people are watching this... I have a 2006 GMC 2500HD 6.0 that I gave to one of the kids a few years back. He rear-ended somebody, but still runs and drives. 280k miles I think. It's with him in West Virginia and need to unload it. What would you do from a distance? Just call LKQ and have them come get it? He's not mechanically inclined or I'd have him part it out.

A lot of people bash Jasper , ALL rebuilders at one time or another have their issues . Jasper has an unlimited mileage and 3 year nationwide warranty . When there is an issue , they , unlike a lot of rebuilders step up to the plate and take care of you . They send a new engine immediately and cover labor at book time , maybe $75/ hr and all ancillary parts / fluids . If you plan to sell , the warranty is a bonus selling point .
