So my RV generator is now flashing a 47 code. It starts and runs for sometimes 20minutes or maybe 5 minutes. When it shuts off and I check the code it comes up 47. Pretty much everything I see on the interwebs is telling me ignition. Some say it could be the magnito, some say brushes, some say board in the control panel. Has anybody here experienced the same? I have checked all the basics, battery charged, no loose wires, getting fuel etc... also it doesn’t matter if it has a load on it or not. Do you think the magnito could go in and out like that? My experience kind of tells me once it’s bad it doesn’t fix it self to run. Maybe could be dirty or corroded? Most likely going to Cummins Southwest this week to fix it, but i would like to have some ideas about it. Some of the things I saw on the net said a lot of places just start throwing pars at it until it works. I have had good luck with Cummins S/W in the past. Any ideas?

That’s the first thing that popped up in n my search, pretty much tried everything they said. Have a feeling it’s the magnito, even though the ohm test normal.
Yeah when ya do all ya can and the issue is still there then is off to Cummins.
We have a Onan repair shop here run by a challenging-to-deal-with Sweed.
I"ll go to Cummins if I come across a difficult to solve issues.

One of our Yamahas had that issue and we got a tip to clean all the ground wires connections. That did it.

Ya, I got a place close that everybody raves about, but my experience is they just throw parts at it until it works, that can get expensive fast.

Did you ever find out the cause of the random shut downs? Mines doing the same with Fault Code 47. Thinking it's the Control Circuit Board???

Mine was setting a few codes and would shut down after 10-20 minutes. Turned out the oil level was low.....and i'm an idiot for not checking it! Oil is full and it runs well now. I hear they will shut down if they have too-much oil also, not sure if its a sensor thing but my buddy swears they will if overfull.

I bought a new circuit board, but not an Onan. It’s aftermarket and it deletes some of the stupid codes that causes them to shut down. It hasn’t shut down since. They say it keeps the fail safe codes like overheating and low oil. I will look and see what brand it is, but I just found it when I googled the part number from the factory board.

Let us know I want to keep one as a spare.

Flight Systems .com makes great boards and supplies awesome tech service for Onans. If that board was an old original it should be replaced any way. Fuels pumps are common “take a shit items” too but I’m not saying this is the cause of the 47 code. How many hours and how old is this 5500.

Everything else gets a Dinosaur board (furnace, water heater, refer)
