So yesterday I wasn't paying attention turned around quick in my yard and whacked the trunk of one of our palm trees in the yard. Had a few little prickly things in my hand that I took out, said a few choice words and then I went about my day.

This morning I wake up and my hand feels like a punched a brick wall, and my hand is swelled up.

Wtf?

Poisoning is probably a strong word for that, but a reaction? Yup! Like most things like this watch it closely and expect it to get worse before it gets better. Most of the time you just need to let it run its course. If your really lucky it may abscess a little and push out any remaining spines. Many plants are built to puncture and break off in flesh, this is what follows. In general not too much doctors can do to help assuming it does not get crazy.

I feel your pain.
I had a one of the palm spines stick straight in the palm of my hand last year. Fuck, it hurt and felt like a little whiny bitch complaining about all the time. I couldn't see anything and i dug around at it and couldn't find anything in stuck in my palm. Ended up getting some drawing salve and in about 3-4 days I was able to pull out a spine over a 1/2 long. I was like damn no wonder it hurt so bad. Still took another week or so before it felt better.

Palm Tree Puncture Wound Treatment. The sharp tips of palm frond blades may be toxic. Palm trees can be dangerous if you touch them in the wrong spot. Sharp thorns on their branches, trunks and the undersides or tips of fronds can puncture the skin and cause bacterial or fungal infections.

I thought you wanted to poison the palm tree after all that. :)

I would clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide and apply anti-bacterial ointment after.

I was trimming my date palm and got this one a year and a half ago. It went straight in and took over 3 months of digging with my knives before it came out.
