keep the 1 in shaft . put a three blade prop and a wake board tower on and have fun with your family boat,( it will never be fast) kinda like building a blown station wagon.

That was peak hp on dyno on pump gas with 8lbs boost.
I only ask about the Aquamet because I have never used one,. I just put a K manel shaft in my Schiada but thats way more hp and was crazy $. Aquamet 22 is less than half of K manel.:grumble:

You currently can't get good K-Monel, the good stuff used to come from Canada but since we have outsourced nearly all of our founding industry the K-Monel now comes from Italy, and as far as i'm concerned it's pure junk, i don't know if they are having a problem with their hardening process or if it's just the physical blend they are using, we got a piece that measured only C28 hardness on the Rockwell tester, it should be about C34-C36. We put one on a customers boat and the shaft bent and it cost the customer about $5k to reset the strut, do some glasswork, and put an Aquamet 22 shaft in it. Aquamet-22 rockwell's out to about C35 and has seemed to hold up pretty well.

The good old K-Monel shafts we liked better than the aquamet, they seemed to hold up to wear better at the strut... but the current ones are shit, go aquamet.

I can quote you on one and order it for you if you give me the length...

If anyone is in need of Aq22 x 1 1/8 diameter give me a shout. I am overstocked and would like to get rid of a few for winter.

I have 14 ft double ended lengths and cut and key or just cut, to order.

1" I can't currently help on, out of stock for the moment.

What material should the 1/4" key at the prop be made of ? What about the coupler to V-drive, should that be case hardened ?
I ask because when I picked up my newly ballanced props they handed me brass key ways. That seems very soft for high HP. Any suggestions ?:blah:

The taper is what holds the prop from turning, the key is basically there just for reverse, and to stop it from initially turning. Once you run the boat the first time that prop has pressed itself pretty hard up the taper, every ounce of forward thrust the boat gets is because that prop is trying to drive itself up the shaft. the key itself doesn't have to be that hard on the prop end, we use standard, non hardened, stainless key stock and have never had a problem, just make sure you grind and shape your key so that the prop is all the way seated on the taper.

If you notice whenever you pull a prop how freaking hard the thing is stuck on the taper, and it's almost never hung up and bound on the key itself. most times the key is loose and you can slide it inside the groove with a pick or small screwdriver while the prop is still on.

If you fit the key properly, nice reference fit, and your split coupler is properly sized to the shaft stainless keys work there as well. That's what we've always used, never had a problem.... Even on big hp turbo stuff

Some guys say use craftsmen standard screwdriver shafts, which are good hardened material, but they will rust, we've never bothered because we've never had issues with the stainless keys. We buy keystock from McMaster for these applications. 316 alloy.

You mean a 4 bolt companion flange instead of a split (pinch) coupler??
