So back in the early summer, my mom gave me a 2008 Acura TL. Car is pretty cherry with only 200k on the clock so we are planning on keeping it for the kids to drive when ready.

In the mean time, I didn't want the car baking outside at home so threw it in our Havasu garage and now want to get it registered out there so we can have a spare car when in town.

Has anyone done this? Is it something I can handle in a short period of time at the MVD??

I saw the form to fill out on the MVD website. Any other information I should be aware of.

Thank you 👍

Joe when my wife's Ca. renewal came I walked it and the title into the Havasu MVD and walked out with an Az registration with Az title in mail within 5 days. Easy peasy I thought... and the plate came in the mail afew days later.

You will need auto insurance with an Arizona licensed agent. Proof of insurance needs a ADOT # on it.

Walk into MVD with the title either signed or already in your name. It takes 5 mins.

Make sure you have AZ road insurance. They do give you a grace period if you don’t have it at the time of registration.

It is that simple in Havasu.

As said above, very easy and quick. The LHC MVD peeps are really helpful and kind, unlike the DMV folks

Perfect, seems easy enough. Website made it seem like a much more daunting task, hence why I came here for the REAL information. Hooking up with my AZ insurance guy now.

make absolutely sure if you make any policy changes that they update it with the state....went through that one time and it's part of why we have nothing registered in AZ anymore. Took days to get dealt with that screw up suspended registrations etc.

Are you planning to register back in CA when the time comes? I’m wondering what that process is going to look like?

We had to register 8 items at MVD through a few month period as we moved over here. Never got asked about insurance though.

The Az police have a portal into the state Insurance system, speeding ticks and then Insurance are the most written tickets. So make sure you stay current.

you can get a 5 year registration for your car so you don’t have to mess with it

Once it’s in the system you can also use the kiosk w/ a CC and they mail out the stickers

Easy enough, just go to the Quik Stop and then tell your insurance compnay it is registered in AZ, they will report the insurance info to AZ MVD instead of CA and send you a AZ insurance card

Quick stop easy peasy. Just did my dads Honda out there for my around town car. Few minutes in and out. No insurance, got it when mvd sent me notice needing policy. Non resident on an older car cheap.
Just did my new sandrail in havasu, dot inspection, then inside to mvd all same day. Was equally easy
5 years on a non resident registration on a high dollar car, not so cheap. But I can drive the fucker down the freeway plated, Lol
CA would have been considerably less, off highway use only

So let’s say theoretically if someone lives in CA but has family members that are full time Havasu residents, use their address to register the vehicles in AZ?
Asking for a friend.
Correct.

Get pulled over in California with a CA DL and Arizona plates, you will quickly learn that it is not worth the savings.

Have the car registered to a business or spouse, moms name.. shrug and drive away. Break the chain of custody and there is not a lot the cop on the side of the road is gonna do. Write you the ticket for whatever you were doing wrong and move on.

The savings is in the smog requirements.

A friend had his boat trailer towed and impounded for this. It is better not to have matching names on the drivers license and registration.

la paz county you dont need to smog it i think. In maricopa county if the vehicle is 5 years or older bring a new smog cert. with it to register. just found that out yesterday.

What about transferring from AZ to CA? I have a suv in my name that needs to be transferred from AZ to CA if I keep it. Already in my name but imagine I will have to smog to transfer to CA.

Mohave doesn't have it either...nor does Pinal if I remember right. Maricopa County and whatever Tucson does are the main ones that require smog.

They required smog for your area i thought some parts of the county were exempt,

If you operate in the grey area to save a few bucks, don't be surprised when you checked.

Yes, you will need to get it smogged and also take the vehicle to a CA DMV or AAA auto club to get the numbers verified.
