I'm a machinist for Exxon-Mobil Torrance Refinery but i hear nothing but good things about Chevron from the cOntractors that have worked there. My uncle is a electrician there and another buddy is a operator. Both of them don't complain about the place. It's good pay and if you like overtime you'll get it, if you hate overtime you'll still get it. As a operator your shift switch days and night every shift you work. Nights sleep most of the time anyways. The hard part is the normally don't hire operators without experience or without going through the P-tec program at either Harbor College or LA Trade Tech.

One thing to consider is they are going to do a hair folicle drug test this hiring. Asked my brother yesterday as I had friends asking about the hire. My Bro is an operator at chevron El Segundo. It is a great job to have bad exposure and air quality but you get paid for it. There is a reason why they are hiring and If anyone is interested PM me.

The exposure and air quality isn't what it use to be. If it was as bad as you make it sound all California refineries would have been shut down. What's they're reason for hiring? I know the are building a new unit from the ground up and my understanding is they're hiring all crafts.

I worked for Texaco/Wilmington for 21 years in Operations/Project Management/ERT, 1 year at Mobil /Torrance,5 years at Chevron El Segundo.

Operations is a great job ,but shift work REALLY SUCKS. Your social life is non existant because you are either working or sleeping when normal people are doing things. Your body and brain are always screwed up because of the sleep deprivation and constant change in biorythems. 90% of the operators are divorced multiple.

The Security Dept. at Chevron are all ex FBI/Police who run EXTENSIVE background checks and are EXTREMELY thorough. If all your application dates and information are not exact you will be disqualified. (I know this from multiple applicants who failed)

Air quality is fucked either way. For my Bro he lives right across the street from a nother refinery so you breathe it either way in so-cal. Basically if your white dont plan on being hired. They have to hire a percentage of people that live around the refinery neighborhoods. Meaning they need minorities to meet certain state kick backs. Said they dont need more employees its a politics game they call a mercy hire.

As far as scheduling goes. My brother had to master the art of sleeping as he put it. Shifts change so often you dont have a set schedule. Job is not for everyone but has been great for him. Another friend who is head operator at Chevron always looks tired. He gets 4 hours a day sleep if lucky when working nights. You have to be able to put yourself to sleep u want to have a normal life. The tests are hard and I know alot of guy's that failed. Reminds me of 10 years ago everyone I know wanted to be a long shoremen now they all want in at the refinery.

sounds like a great time:rolleyes:

With the economy being shot it is great for some. They get paid well and the last 2 years my brother has been in a much better mood. His live in girlfriend has changed ten fold now that he is there. Guess thats what happens when you make twice as much as Fedex the first year working less ot than fedex. My brother never enjoyed work (he would leave the site after an hour and maybe come back for the last half hour when we werer building full time) hated fed ex here he seems to like it already teaching classes after 2 years. He made more than me the last two years and his pay just keeps going up.

It's pretty much the military asvap test. It's general mechanical, chemical, math, English. A lot of questions not a lot of time. I believe Chevron also does a Cobra test I believe which is just to see how you deal with pressure controlling a unit I believe

The operators test is a pc based control board test with emergency situations and malfunctions built in. It tests your ability to multi-task as well as focus on the big picture and not blow up the refinery...

Most people without experience have a hard time with it.

That's the second half of the test I believe. When I tested for Chevron is was the asvap test and those who passed moved on to the pc test

Same here!:D

Worked out good that I didn't get through their testing because I got on with ExxonMobil as maintenance instead of operations. So I get my 4x10s instead of rotation shifts.

I have been working in a refinery for 24 years and you never get use to working rotating shift work, you can't ask your body to sleep one night and stay awake the next just don't happen. Exposure to chemical is 1000 times better then it was even 5 years ago. Working christmas and thanksgiving sucks ass, but being off for a 4 day weekend once a month is really nice for going to the river. Great job for a single guy, not so great for someone married with a family.

actually, i gotta disagree with you on some points jim.

my sleep pattern, although irregular at times, is pretty normal for the most part. if i gotta work the next day (or night) i adjust when i go to bed. i am more of a night time guy ... i can't stand waking up at 0355am to come in for a day shift.

as far as working on christmas/thanksgiving, i would rather work it because it is a shitload of $$$$:D:thumbsup ... i can still go home and see the family and enjoy in the festivities after i get off.

the long weekends are great, but we get every other weekend off due to our type of schedule, so we are usually at the river every other weekend.

i have been in this industry for over 12 years. 3 of those i was single and yes it was fun.;) but it has had no bearing on my relationship with my wife or kid. sometimes i don't want to go to work because i want to be with them, but then i think i would see them less if i were a monday through friday guy.

no doubt in my mind though that this is a good job and a great opportunity for anyone.:thumbsup

So my son is down there right now taking his tests. 3 different tests each lasting about 45 minutes. I guess now it's just sit back and hope he actually gets a call for an interview or 2nd set of tests. (not sure how this all works) Odds are not good though I'm sure with thousands of applicants.

Dad's still proud and keeping his fingers crossed.

Hey Mr. C,
Remember positive thoughts, get positive results. I don't care if there's 10,000 applicants he has to think he is the only guy for the job. Get out there and getcha some! Good luck!!!

To all those working in the processing, transportation and storage business, I would like to say thanks. People like you help feed people like me and our employees.

OGS,

I have been nothing but positive with him. He sent me a text when he got there saying. Damn dad I am the youngest person here. I told him so what, turn your brain on stay focused and do what you need to do. Your a smart kid and you can do whatever you set your mind to.

And I heard they were expecting about 9k applications. not sure how many passed the actual resume part and were ask in for the first set of testing. He knows of a few people who were sent letters saying they did not qualify to to even take the test.

Depends on position forgot to ask if he is going for Operations or maintenance. He is young which is a good thing. He can learn from the tests if not hired this round. I know several that passed tests and were not hired but told they would be called when needed. Took a while (18 months)but they are in now. Everyone I know working at Chevron is happy with there job. This hiring is a tough one as there are 9,000 testing and 26 or 27 openings. Dont be discouraged if you dont make this one but learn from the tests and prepare for the next . You wont get in unless you try.

When I tested for Operating Engineers years ago I tested with thousands of people. Didn't think I had a chance. Well I ended up scoring in the top 50. Don't know if I was just really smart or there was a whole lot of idiots testing. Probably the latter. Moral of the story, you have no clue of the odds. If hes a sharp kid and takes tests well he'll probably be ok. Fingers crossed for him. Those are good jobs.

i just got some more details as we had some friends test today as well. They are hiring 15 in operations 5 in maintenance and 2 lab techs. 22 in all. The testing has changed and so has the hiring process. The test they took today is alot different than the past. No simulator test and the math is way easier than previous tests. Pretty much everyone passes and it will be a lottery drawing. They will draw say 500 and from there give them a hair folicle drug test and then a background check. Due to lawsuit they have to make it equal oppurtunity for chance of jobs. Anyone who can pass the drug test and background check with the luck of the draw can pass todays test can get in. Nice to know some inexperienced asshat can get the job over someone more qualified. Have heard many horror stories of what some lazyasses will do once they are in since they are backed by the union. The Plant is a big bomb it would be nice to know qualified guy's are running it. Fucking politics.

Hope someone we knows gets the luck of the draw. Not like the Fire dept where they have to hire so many minorities. Today they announced the new black chief of LA county. Remember when I wanted in my whole family 3 generations is in the FD and they told me unless you can change your race theres no way we can get you in.

Rumor here at ExxonMobil is were going to try to get some of their employees instead of hiring off the street.

My uncle worked at mobile for years. He retired in the mid 90's. He loved it. Drove pet coke around. Unfortunately he died of leukemia in '98.

My sister-in-laws husband works there now. Not sure exactly what he does, but I think he's a pencil pusher somewhere there.

There were so many idiots working at Texaco , it was a joke, The kicker was , promotions were based on a minimum of ability and performance. If you had the most seniority you were promoted. Ex Navy officers were the executives and the gov. made sure the refinery was well represented by SETA program losers who could not be fired short of exploding a bomb in the lunch room. And before drug testing it was unbeleivable. When I hired in, and after basic training, I was introduce to 2 operators who regularly dropped acid and pet and talked to 1500hp electric motors like they were labrador retreivers. A lifetime of entertainment.

curiosity is getting to me.

I know my son was told if you didn't get selected you would NOT be notified. Also know it could be anywhere from 2 to 6 months ++ before they make decisions.

Question is...... Anyone who knows someone that applied, have they heard anything back??

From what hear from people that work there and friends that tested, the tested around 1000-2000 people(all minority and females). There were 22 positions and from what I hear 22 dark minorities were being hired. I could be wrong but this is what I have heard.
