I just got back from a few days at Bonneville. Bought an older 22 foot travel trailer right before I left for this trip. I pulled it with my 2008 Duramax and it tows just fine. It suited my needs for this trip but is not a long term solution.

I want to be able to haul my '34 Ford with me to events and there is no way to do that and pull the trailer too (also want to tow my Harley with sidecar when we go camping) . I used to just sleep in the back of the truck but I have a girlfriend now and need more room. Plus, got a little spoiled having a bath and shower inside the trailer so that is now a requirement.

I thought about a toy hauler but I don't think the '34 will fit inside one. I need about 14' length. The car weighs a bit over 2K pounds and I don't know if they hold that much weight at the rear?

A slide in camper (Lance type) is an option but my girlfriend thinks it would be too small plus the truck has a 6" lift on 35's so a camper would stick up pretty high and be hard to get in and out of.

Seems like the best solution would be a Class C or a small Class A motorhome. I don't know what kind of towing capacity they have though. They all seem to have huge rear overhangs. I think what I'd really like is a small toterhome but I've only seen the huge ones.

I saw this old converted motorhome at Bonneville and thought it would be perfect. It's the old GMC motorhomes with front wheel drive and the back cut off and converted to a car hauler. My '34 is much shorter than this Pierce Arrow (I think) coupe so the living quarters section could be a little larger. These rigs are pretty hard to find though.

Are there any other options I'm overlooking?

I’m looking at a toy hauler right now that has 5k capacity and 20’ garage 36’ over all. Getting your car up the ramp would be the only challenge.

If you need a 14' length there are many 25' ish toy haulers that will work for you. The car being light at 2000 lbs will be fine. That is the footprint and weight of most 4 seat RZRs, so the market is full of toy haulers that will fit the bill, plus you wont have to worry about the roof height. That will be the cheapest option for you, and your truck will pull it without much issue, but some air bags will help stability.

Drop small travel trailer on longer flat bed frame. Picking up somethin like this is probably the cheapest option with most amenities. That Nomad above would be great if you can deal with the lack of interior amenities and wanted a larger enclosed area for the car.

See....this proves it, the age old debate....
Chick's ruin EVERYTHINGGGGH.....LOL
We bring them into our lives then start doing all kinds of complicated shit to accommodate them etc. Next thing we know, we're doing all kinds of complicated, expensive, exasperating shit just so their "happy". Few yrs later were find ourselves frustrated and lost in this circus thinking how, when did this shit get so complicated???? Where did all the fun go?
Why does everything have to be so much work, so much compromise? What the he'll happened???? Where did I go astray? Lol
I'm just a kidding ya. Good luck with your solution and the relationship....

Have you measured your car? I have a 32' and I seriously doubt it's 14ft long. Width and weight, I don't think you would have any issues. How low is your car? I think the real issue would be getting it up the ramp and into the hauler, but I'm sure there's a solution for that.

Now this is a solution that could work! I like the idea of unlimited head room in the toy area too. I want to do KOH next year and bring my Blazer which would never fit in a toy hauler. I'll have to do some measuring but I think a long flatbed trailer would give me enough room for anything I want to haul and enough living quarters too. Maybe find an old a 14' or so trailer to sit on it.

The only thing it wouldn't work for is taking a boat with me however, I'm looking at 30ish foot boats that have a full cabin and can always just sleep in that instead.

That Nomad looks nice but for $40K, I'd want a bit more comfortable interior.

Thanks!

Yeah, the '34 is just a few inches longer than a Deuce but with front and rear nerf bars, I think I really only need a bit over 12'. It does sit pretty low though. May need to use extra long ramps.

You need to look at Forrest River Work & Plays and or Nomad trailers.. They do exactly what you want!! Electric bed goes into the ceiling.. The rest of it is an enclosed trailer with a bathroom and a kitchen.

I don't understand the point of a tiny enclosed thing like a lance or a crawler hauler etc..

Click this link and explore around a little.. :).

Don't worry about the prices, you can find used work and plays cheap that will easily haul all of your stuff. I'd guess you'd need a 24'ish W&P.. There is a variety of manufacturers that make these things once you kinda figure out what you are looking at.

I like the FBW models on the work and plays.. This is a 30 which is larger than you'd need.

They also make 28 / 26 / 24.. Find one used, should be 24-26K for a newer used one.

Those cab on the front trailers seem like they wouldn’t tow right unless you had a car on the back.

crawler haulers are for stuff that can't fit inside an enclosed trailer. Most things with 40"+ tires have trouble fitting in things. Crawler haulers are usually setup to carry a lot of weight too. I use a toy hauler for my small crawler now but if I want anything bigger I will probably go crawler hauler or motorhome plus car trailer.

Don’t get stuck on the truck.
An RV with an enclosed trailer is IMHO the best option.

For your needs…just you and the GF, I’d consider building a flatbed with just a small structure at the front with a bathroom/storage (should be able to do this with not much weight in a 4x8 footprint) and put a shell on the truck with a mattress in the bed. That gives you a decent sized bed and a shitter/shower, with room to put a vehicle on the trailer all in a pretty minimalist package. Maybe rig up a soft side awning for the flatbed to stay out of the weather if it gets nasty once the car is off.

Or, just get a 20ft enclosed and add a bathroom and futon to sleep in. Sort of a minimalist toy hauler.

So no black, grey or fresh water tanks? No propane tanks? No fuel tank for the generator?

That there is an abortion that lived! 😁
From what I’ve seen, a majority of these builds retain everything from the original donor. All they do is pull the axles and fab a false axle in between the trailer so that it sits tucked or they keep the axles and fab up mounts for the axles to sit on. Idk….some of those dudes come up with some off the wall shit.

Never seen one, but...

On everything 5th I have seen, the propane tanks are in the front lower part of the trailer, that is now completely unaccessible in the pic you posted! Batteries are usually in there as well.

My "tanks" all hang Way below the bottom of the trailer. So you can get to the dump valves and all that?

I can see the slide in camper thing working out, but the trailer thing? I just don't see how it's possible.

Either way, pretty fugly! 😝

I’m assuming it depends on the trailer. The tanks on my buddy’s and FIL WW 5th are tucked in the trailer and covered flush front to back.
I found this dude that completely re routed his setup.

I agree it’s not the prettiest thing out there but I doubt the dudes that build these to haul their custom crawlers aren’t building them to win worlds prettiest trailer awards lol. They’re super practical and beyond simplistic. Only reason I joined those pages is because I’ve always wanted to build an OG Fleetwood Scorpion before Fleetwood Scorpions were a thing. I don’t need all the fufu shit to go boondock at the dunes or the desert. Give me a Popup, a trailer to haul my Jeep or sxs safely and I’ll call it a day lol

Small Super C and an enclosed trailer. Like an older 6316 Gulfstream on the kodiak, or maybe a 6331 Supernova on the 4200IH, or newer depending on your budget? Then tow an enclosed, boat, whatever you want.

Depending on how big you want to go, there are plenty of 5th wheels that will haul that inside the toy hauler, even with a separate garage. My brother in law will have his carbon for sale soon...fits a 4 door JKU on 40" tires inside the toy hauler.

If you dont mind the car being in the living space you could go much much smaller and it would fit inside.

Having tried it all, motorhome + trailer is our go to, but every scenario has a different answer and none of the answers will do it all.

Let us know what you end up getting!

I'll post an update when I pick something up. I think our preference would be a small class A or C and just pull a trailer. I already have a 20' enclosed and a 20' power tilt flat bed trailer. The motorhome would be able (I hope) to pull either trailer or my Centurion jet bote. Not sure about a 30ish foot twin engine Formlua or similar that I want to get.

The other thing I like about a motorhome is the ability to just get up from the front seats and walk to the back without having to stop and get out. I'm retired but my girl still works but can work remotely (she's been doing so since C-19). We can travel and she can work on her laptop in the back while I drive.
