Putting my new to me Hallet 270 back together with my carbureted 540 in place of the mercruiser package. Using a lot if not all of the factory brackets, but sounds like a sea strainer is a good idea too.

I see a few different versions, is there a benefit to taller versions other than it holds more trash?

Also, looks like some install external pickups. Is that necessary or can I just plumb direct from drive, through strainer and into raw water pump? If external is necessary, would I just plumb into a secondary in let and let the drive And external pickups supply water?

Thanks for any advice!

I run the Teague. Cant believe I never had one prior. The amount of crap that thing catches is alarming. I ran a through hole pickup and blocked off the drive.

Are you using the pickup through the drive or a transom style?
It's my understanding that the pickup through the drive almost acts like its own strainer and doesn't produce a lot of trash. Its the transom mounted pickups that collect a ton of junk.

Either way heres some of my thoughts.

Mount it above the water line or place a valve to shut the supply. This is so you can clean it without flooding the boat. I prefer above the water line that way there's no valve to forget.

Adding a hose connection is nice, but it's also another connection that can have issues.

The taller ones are for more collection capacity.

Also get one with a few additional ports and plug them. Never know what you might need or want in the future

The taller ones are not really made for collecting more. There is still only so much screen surface area that once clogged needs to be cleared. The taller ones are for more water capacity for boats they fly out of the water often so they dont starve the engine for water. Hardin marine one is easiest to open and clean and has plenty of ports.

Agree, I chose the Hardin just for that reason, unscrew the top and clean out, I wouldn’t want to fiddle with a bunch of wingnuts.

this is how my fountain was plumbed. line from port side of gate valve came from the outdrive and then went to the sea strainer. the small hose and shutoff above gate valve went to a garden hose fitting on the lip of the engine cover. so you close the gate valve open yellow shutoff and run engine, then just move everything back when done. I did forget to open the gate valve once(only once) that is when I found out how good the stainless water pumps are, just opened it and everything was good until I sold the boat.

I pick up water off from the bottom of the boat and run right to the strainer, as mentioned above I was floored with how much crap was in it the first time out. mine is below water level so when I open it water floods in the boat, I have a -12 AN plug that I screw in the water pick up line to stop everything if I need to clean. I went with a Teague because they offered the right port combination I was looking for. The link below will show the mount I made to place the strainer, go to post 483 on this page. Good luck and they are a good investment in my opinion.

Thanks all. I'm guessing it's necessary to run a shutoff If I plumb the teague water hose setup through the strainer too? Guessing if I don't it will flow out the external intake/drive depending on how I set it up?

I have 2, one for the motor and one for the intercooler. The one for the motor just comes straight from the drive then to the water pump. That’s how I would set up your 270. As said, if it’s below the water line, install a shut off valve. Teague sells the stainless ball valves and get their quick release lid too, it just unscrews.

I got one for you guys, this appeared in my strainer after running it on the hose. My guess is it was hiding inside the hose, which meant it went thru the IMCO pickup, thru the drive, and into the strainer. So the strainers do work...lol

Are you taking about their flush setup where you can just screw the garden hose on? Yes, you’ll have the block off the hose coming from the drive otherwise the water will take path of least resistance and run out the drive instead of into the water pump.

I've run Teaque strainers on all my boats for many years with no issues. My Sanger with a Intercooled, Blown 392 Hemi in it has never had an issue but sure has collected a heap of crap in the strainers due to it being fresh water cooled. My Sleekcraft Ambassador has a Intercooled Blown 468 chevy in it and while the engine is cooled by a heat exchanger system the fresh water coming in for both the heat exchanger and the Intercooler is protected by Teague strainers. Lastly my F40 Fastlane has dual 502 MPI motors (no Intercooler) and each one is protected by a Teague strainer. In fact before l bought a Myco 40' trailer a couple of years ago to get the boat onto a trailer and out of the water, my strainers used to collect little fish in them that swam up the hoses into the strainers. Of course l always did the right thing and got them out before starting the motors up.;) Note, l still have all my boats.:D

Strainers work. We ran the Catalina Polar Bear fun run on Saturday and with the rain Friday night the LA River was a mess especially in the launch ramp area. Yep that's an orange peel in there, this is on my buddy's 23 Howard. I have two of the Teague strainers on the Fountain with thru hull fittings. I put stainless tee's in the water lines on the outlet side of the strainers for flushing the motors. Works great and I can back flush the strainers to get most debris out without removing the lid. Too much crud in the photo below so it's gotta come apart.
