I'm reading on the Slash X Facebook page how people will miss Brian the owner of the Slash X,, and "They're pulling it all back together".
Seems like Soft ball Jimmy and I were just talking to him.

Any details?

"The owners of the Slash X Ranch Cafe were involved in a head-on collision yesterday on hwy 247. Brian Lynn died and his wife Gail is still in the hospital today.

They were preparing to host a memorial service tomorrow for the people killed at the MDR California 200 offroad race. I've been an occasional visitor there for 20 years, always looked forward to pulling up in front of that old timber building, knowing there was cold beer and a place to rest inside.

Everybody seems to end up there during a weekend in the dezert, it is part of the experience. My condolences to the Lynn family and Vaya Con Dios Brian Lynn.

Slash-X owner, Sacramento man killed in head-on crash
August 12, 2011 2:16 PM
By KAREN JONAS, staff writer
Updated at 2:15 p.m. with additional information.

BARSTOW ? The owner of Slash-X Ranch Cafe and a Sacramento man were both killed Thursday afternoon after a head-on collision between the two men?s vehicles on Highway 247 near Barstow.

According to a report from the San Bernardino County Coroner?s Department, 41-year-old Abdul Formoli (Arab) of Sacramento was driving a Toyota Solara northbound on Highway 247 about five miles from Barstow when he drifted onto the southbound side around 2:25 p.m. Slash-X owner Brian Lynn of Barstow was driving southbound with his wife, Gayle, in his Ford F150 pickup truck.

Formoli?s vehicle struck Brian?s truck head-on at a curve in the road and both vehicles then caught fire, according to the report. Formoli was confirmed dead at the scene and Brian was flown to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he died at 4:38 p.m.

Lucas Hand, a friend of the Lynn family, said Gayle suffered serious injuries in the crash and was airlifted to Loma Linda Medical Center for treatment.

A report from the California Highway Patrol stated that Formoli (Arab) was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision, but neither of the Lynns were wearing seatbelts. The CHP is investigating the incident.

The fatal collision came as the Lynns were preparing to install a memorial for the eight people killed at Mojave Desert Racing?s annual California 200 night race last August in Johnson Valley. A driver of a pick-up truck in the race lost control and drove into spectators ? killing eight people and wounding 22 others.

As a vice president of Fast Aid, the non-profit organizing the memorial, Hand said he was working closely with Brian on Thursday to prepare Slash-X for the race memorial and was good friends with him.

?He was one of those guys who never met a stranger,? said Hand.

Hand said the Lynn family still wanted the memorial to continue on Saturday, although the restaurant will be closed this weekend. Fast Aid still plans to hold the barbecue, with the proceeds going to the Lynn family.

Travis Bonnar, a member of Fast Aid who was injured at the race last year along with his son and daughter, said Brian?s death was a tragedy. He was grateful that the memorial ceremony was continuing despite Brian?s passing.

?I know the victims are very thankful,? said Bonnar. ?It?s very meaningful that (the Lynn family has) been so generous.?

Steve Smith, a local historian and friend of Brian?s, said he admired Brian?s love of Slash-X. Smith said Brian was an off-roader who used to visit the cafe for dinner, and decided to purchase it about 10 years ago when it went up for sale.

?I really admired him because he not only ran Slash X, he tried to keep the history of the place,? said Smith.

Hand said he had not found out about memorial services for Brian yet and said the Lynn family had requested donations to Fast Aid be made in lieu of flowers. Those wishing to donate can visit http://www.fast-aid.org/

I have been going there since the early 80's can't tell how nice they were to us always had good conversation and cold beer after long hard rides. I still remember dropping over that last hill and seeing it in the distance. We used to drink alot of beers there and had many a poker run that ended with a great barbecue. I live in Texas and we have lots of land here but no offroad riding like whats out in the Barstow and Johnson Valley areas its unique and some of the best.
