Congrats making the decision is the hardest part. Where are you heading and what about work? Aren’t your kids still in school?

So wife’s car is due for reg come mid December. We leave like Dec 20th… do I pay the $500+ to renew in CA or run Smokey and the bandit style to the next state for 8 days?

No. Not at all.

Does the new state care about back registration?

Worst case, non op the car if the new state is going to ding you.

You don't need to pay the registration. Don't get a ticket out of town. Montana never asked about my registration when I changed my vehicles over, and neither did Nevada. I didn't need to bring in my current registration. I did, but no one asked for it. We brought in a truck to Nevada that was non-op'd in CA. I registered in NV 3-4 years later. They never once asked about my registration status. They don't care. Other states don't care if you owe CA $$$.

Besides, how will your new state know if you moved Dec 10th or Dec 20th?

Can't you do something online before you leave? Even if you do not get plates or temps you could still have the paperwork that said you registered it. I have driven a few vehicles over state lines without plates because it was a private purchase. Never even been stopped and had police go right past me many times. The one time I but at a dealership they give me a temp sticker the size of a pack of cigarettes and I get pulled over.

Theres a form CA requires you to fill out when you leave along with your "new state" and your dates. I imagined all DMV's talk to each other these days and CA has some system of trying to get whatever money possible from everyone.

What state? I’d just tell CA you’re leaving on expiration day and register with the new state as soon as you can.

Make ‘em work for it.

I didn’t register my truck all through Covid. I got pulled over once, blamed the dipshits at the DMV and their Covid nonsense and then the parking ticket bitch gave me a ticket for it on street sweeping day when I left it on the street. I just paid the ticket and still didn’t register it!! I was behind 3 years when the pricks finally impounded it from in front of my Mom’s house!!! 😆

The fines were worth it. Paid like $1,700.00 to get it current. 😆

And what if you don't fill it out? I remember the form. Nevada has one also. I never filled them out. Now, they may send late notifications to your old address, or email if you do it online. It's none of their business where you are moving to. Absolutely none of their business. You are not required to tell them.

Maybe someone else who moved out will chime in and have had a different experience. @napanutt did you fill out the form?

Or, you could just pay the $500 and don't look back. Consider it an exit tax :)

Would load it with motorcycles, camping stuff and on top sluces, highbankers, all mining crap.To this day I have original owners 83 plates on it, I used to mine! and in az wheeled vehicles and trailers used for agriculture and mining were exempt.

So you could roll smokey and the bandit and not have a problem. Like someone said above the new state wont ask for current registration from CA in order to register the car.

If you don't feel like taking the risk of doing that then pay the registration in CA and when you transfer the title to the new state you can claim a refund from CA for the registration of the car since it was only registered in CA for a month after you re-newed. This happened when we moved to AZ. Paid wife's registration in June in CA. Move to AZ in September and registered the car in AZ that month. We were able to get a refund from CA for the remainder of the registration that wasn't needed. I have never heard of anyone else doing this so not sure if CA honors it or we just got really lucky but i was surprised to Have CA give me money back. Also this happened in 2017 so things might have changed. Doesn't hurt to look into atleast.

Edit just found this online. Hope it helps.

My wife and I moved from CA to AZ in 2017. We never filled out a form in california telling them our cars were leaving the state. When we registered our cars in AZ, the AZ MVD sent a notice telling them that our cars left CA and are now in AZ. I never had to fill out a single form.

I didn’t fill out any freakin form.

They sent me a delinquent registration notice once on the Camry. I can’t remember if I called or did it online, but basically told them no. The car had been registered in AZ almost 2 years at that point. In fact, I changed every registration and my license in the first 3 days I had an AZ address.
My bigger fight was with the CA board of extortion, as I’ve spoken about on here in the past.

I imagine you’ll have a place to move into on the 20th. When will you have an address in the new state? As soon as you have it, start registering. I would imagine the new dmv will give you a paper license and registration on the spot or mail to you which will work until new plates and sticker comes.

What if you even got a P.O. Box in the new state and registered now? I don’t know the law, it’s just an idea.

Where's the RDP residency CA DMV employees at? There’s got to be at least one here. Or are they afraid to come out? 😁

I didn't fill out any form. I never got another registration form from the commie state as far as I know. Does the post office even forward gov docs? If we did get a notice the wife probably threw it away and never mentioned it to me.

I agree with you that it is none of their business where we go.

When I moved to TX they didnt ask for anything. Just took my $85 and handed me a plate. Only thing I made sure I told CA I was done with was my Peterbilt plates. They wanted them back because I was apportioned. I send them back with a little “F U” note 👍

They will fine you up the wazoo but thats their problem. You will never register that car in CA again. The fines & registration will drop out of computer in 10 years.

I filled out none of that when I moved. CA never sent anything either.

I just moved from Texas to Knoxville to get away from all the State border jumpers, oh and the asylum seekers too😁

My vehicle hasn’t been registered since Covid, I have 1 of 4 O2 sensors with some heater sensor fault that makes the computer not finish making ready for Texas State inspection. I did all I could without paying someone else to fix, so I moved😁

I’ll get new plates here, no inspection, no window stickers, no smog just a license plate I think.
Easy peasy.

When I moved from California i did not run right down to NV dmv and i ended up being 3 days past due on the wife's car . NV charged me late fees. I had no idea there is a date of experation i thought it was the full month . On top of it the registration was 200 dollars more then California too. Congratulations on your escape !

Yes.. I think some states care, others don’t. For $10 to non op the car for a week or two you are covered at least.

Just don’t use the CA toll roads 😁

When we left California, we didn't notify them, in fact we registered both cars in AZ. two months before we actually left, that was about 12 years ago.

I had a dirt bike I quit paying, they notified I owed them so I sent in the form to tell them it was gone. This went on until they took some tax refund money to pay for it anyway. It got to be too hard to get less than $30 back I gave up.

I bought a truck in 2011 from a guy moving to Texas and he registered there then decided to sell it before he left California. I still have not registered it just riding dirty, but I only drive it maybe once or twice a month.
