So my son is 17 months old. Everything I read is he's too young for a motorcycle helmet due to its weight. Would a bicycle helmet work for just putting around the desert?
He will be strapped into his normal car seat in the back of the rzr. Obviously bicycle helmets are not DOT approved.
He is very tall for his age.

What would you guys do?

I wouldn't put him in there until he was old enough for a helmet....Although you will be just cruizing around the desert...The guy hauling ass next to you would be my concern....

Not too sure what else other then a motorcycle helmet. The problem is in California it needs to be DOT approved.

Might also look at a donut for his neck. Provides a little extra support.

California has a lot of problems and dumb ass rules. I guess one has to decide whether to take a chance on a ticket from the Ranger or deprive your kids from growing up having some fun.

I might suggest looking for a helmet that matches up with a neck brace. All the groms have been wearing them at the bmx tracks for years.

.

Look at skiing/snowboarding helmets. Helmets sold for wake boarding would be good too.

Daytona Helmets makes helmets that are DOT approved. Make them as small as 3XS. I bought a couple for my kids but since I'm in AZ I don't use them. If it's for a short ride I'm sure they'll be fine. But long rides the kids fall asleep and the helmet is too heavy for theyre necks to support.

The new mountain bike and BMX full face helmets are sweet and super lightweight. I would be amazed if someone checked them for a DOT sticker.

Rethink that. In Arizona, helmets are required for all minors (under 18) on Motorcycles, Quads, SxS, etc. Both on and off-road.

This!

BMX full face helmets are also a bit lighter than MX helmets. Even though you can find a MX youth helmet that will fit his head, it will be pretty heavy for him. The donut definately helps support
