I've pieced together a tool kit for the road but I want to buy a new, "complete" kit. Today I found this one - I'm OK with Husky tools - I can return them to Home Depot. This looks to be a legit ½ price deal - anyone got other suggestions before I buy?

270 pieces for $99.00

If you get a box set like that as a road box, put a belt or a strap around it. The latches tend to break if it bounces around to much. I have the typical Craftsman "briefcase", one in each trailer.

Good idea. I read the "drawers" pull completely out so a strap'll be mandatory until I chuck the blow molded case and puttem into a tool box

Thats a legit half price deal. It always bothers me that these "mechanics tool sets" never come with even some of the most basic sets of pliers. Like not even a single set of them....

I have that in my motorhome as a tool kit. The drawers are terrible, but it works

If you can get one on ebay, I’ve always lusted over the military mechanic kits. “GMTK” I know the tools have changed over the years but the Armstrong kit in a Pelican care is bad ass. I’ve seen them complete for a few hundred bucks in the past.

Edit: Just checked and prices have skyrocketed. Any deals would have to be off a gov liquidator site or Craigslist

The Pittsburgh from harbor freight does. Pliers, needle nose, and a small crescent wrench, screwdrivers, allen wrenches and torx bits. I have one in my boat one in my toy hauler and one in my truck.

I have the suitcase version of that one no issues. The only thing is I wish I had the drawer one as the suitcase one doesn’t hold the tools well.

I guess. It's a socket set and some wrenchs from the looks of it.

I learned long ago from my horrible habit if throwing every junk tooI I found (even when having multiple good tools in my box at home.) Into my road box.

The first time I needed ratchet on the side of the road, I pull out some pos. 3/8 ratchet give it a tug and . . Well from that day I keep one of each of what I think I need in SO or MAC in my road box, nothing worse than really needing a tool and it breaks when you have five of them at home.

I have one of those husky kits in each vehicle. I drilled a 1/4” hole straight down thru the drawers and have a rod that slides down, like a latch. The sockets go to 1-1/16”. Has torx, etc.

Otherwise it’s an awesome kit. That and a small bag with a few pliers, slut wrench or two, voltmeter, etc and you’re good to go.

FWIW I have A Husky ratchet set in Havasu, it’s worked fine for working on the boat and SXS for 8 years.

Great idea - I copied you using a wood dowel - works really well.

I really like this Husky kit and may get another 1 or 2

Thats not a bad set I like building my own and stuff it all in a canvas type bag so it doesn’t bounce around driving down the road

I’m pretty happy with Husky tools because Home Depot and they’re not Kobalt or Harbor Freight crap

I've been looking at tool boxes lately. Husky is the worst of the bunch so far. They did have a killer deal on combination end wrenches though. $30 or $40 got a huge set of standard and metrics in 2 or 3 different lengths including stubby's.

The problem with those sets is they're so loaded with shit you'll never use.

I'd build your own kit, and spend a bit more money to have something 10 times more useful and 1/2 the weight.

If I was building another road box...here's what I'd get

1/4" drive set...I have a couple of these and they're awesome - https://www.jbtools.com/e-z-red-mms14-20-piece-1-4-drive-mini-master-set/ $26

3/8" drive deep and shallow sockets from harbor freight...the pittsburg line is good quality here, and cheap

These ratchets...throw the 1/4" one in your home tool box, since you don't need it in the road box. https://www.ebay.com/itm/3937258658...rIiQjvDzv05P4YxFOUjcQzbTpnUfs8jhoCJ4cQAvD_BwE

Most likely the only thing you'll use 1/2" drive stuff for is lug nuts and possibly shackle bolts on your trailer....find the individual sockets you need for those instead of carrying around a full set of 1/2" drive shit you'll never use...along with a breaker bar.

Set of standard and metric wrenches...11mm is the same as 7/16, 13mm is the same as 1/2", 19mm is the same as 3/4"...so you can get rid of 3 wrenches out of your sets to save space and weight.

Harbor freight has decent screwdrivers individually for cheap...get #2 phillips, #1 phillips, whatever the equivelent size flatheads, and the biggest flathead they have (prybar).

Throw it all in a tool bag along with a roll of mechanics wire, electrical tape, zip ties, some small pieces of sand paper, and a couple shop towels to take up extra room and keep things from rattling.

This will make a reliable kit that won't take up nearly as much room as the original kit you posted and be more useful.

A set of water pump pliers, normal pliers, needle nose, and dikes

Big and small crescent wrench

Set of metric and standard long "L" allen wrench sets.

For $100 bucks this set is still a good deal, even if you throw away the shit you will never ever use. There is some junk in this one, but not much.

Was in Costco the other night, and they had a set Very similar to this one.

Everything was in black chrome. Looked sweet!

I don't see it on their website, so you might want to just run by the store. Go late. There was nobody there!

We carry those in the boats most of the time. They have saved a lot of asses for 90 bucks.

I bought it last year for 99. Works well for what it is. I use it for RV and taking my son to the motocross track. I don't think there is a better deal.

I have a tool kit in every vehicle including boats. Most times I have a starting kit and add to it but for the last boat I walked into Harbor Freight and started at zero. Grabbed a bag and built it myself. Not the cheapest but I got everything I wanted and knew what was in the kit and more importantly what wasn't. A tool kit is never complete but this one was close for around $350. A boat kit vs car vs trailer vs RV.... completely different in my opinion.
