I didn't think it would happen again, but had to change jobs. Today was my last day at PMC. After my dad retired last year, things took a turn and I didn't feel it was appropriate to continue down that path any longer as it was jeopardizing my family's security and health.

I gave my 2 week notice on Monday and at first, they were going to take me up on that. I guess something changed last night and when I got into the office after handling a service issue, I was informed that today was my last day.

I start at the new job on Wednesday so I have some time off to enjoy my unemployment.

The new company's office is in Thousand Oaks for MUCH higher pay and far less commute (25 minutes versus 70 minutes one way). Same role and work but a much larger company so plenty of room to grow and advance.

Bitter sweet day. PMC has been in my life for my entire life and the dream was to someday be an owner, but unfortunately I didn't see a path from A to B without putting my family at risk further.

Congratulations on the next step in life Sir. I am in a similar boat as you, I just left the company I’ve worked at since I was 14 years old for a new company on November 20th. Higher pay, way bigger company with more room to grow, etc. Still scary as shit though.

Be a little careful, uncertain times ahead. Generally last in, first out.

I believe they have to honor the two week notice and pay you out.
We do it all the time. Employee in sales give 2-4 weeks notice, that day they are told today is your last day. They then get paid for the full notice period.

It's commonplace that companies will axe you quickly after you give notice.
Our company walks you out almost immediately as does everyone in the industry. Last time i resigned (25 yrs ago) i had a noon tee time set up. I sat with my box for 4 f’g hours waiting for my exit interview. Still see my old VP and the sales guy that had the tee time. 😁.
PS. My VP that told me i was making a huge mistake left 6 mos later.

Unless you are a value to them.
Axe after giving notice = you mean nothing to them.
Your position makes a difference. Broom pusher vs a top representative, who do think will be walked out on the spot?

I was concerned about that but I am bringing a relatively rare skill set that they have been needing for a while. This is according to the VP I interviewed with. That was echoed by my new director supervisor also.

I'd like to know if that is true because they decided to pay me through tomorrow. I found out that if I worked in December at all, they would have to pay for my health insurance for the entire month so I'm sure that had a big factor as to why they decided to cut me lose now.

I understand that but don’t know the backstory with your dad or what they do or anything else. Good luck with the new job. Change is tough but can be good.
Gotcha. Dad was the former president and owner and just retired at the end of 22. His partner continued on with the guy that took over my dad's portion of ownership.

They are a mechanical contractor in the LA area.

At my place of business it is a policy.
In CA the employer can still go ahead and fire you before the notice period expires, without paying you out. just verified with the CHRO at my wifes company

Worked a UAW job and we were told about 6 weeks in advance about the first round of layoffs. Almost everyone on my shift was gone, me too. So, for those last 6 weeks (fill in the blanks) and it turns out, production did not fall off much. We had time to look into this, not that it was difficult. Everything we did was logged at a minimum of 15 minute intervals.

Last shift, they ask for overtime. Shifts were 3 on 3 off 12 hrs so first night in they ask. Everybody says no, they had to force somebody to work overtime. (no comment needed)

Same company, they were re-aligning the shifts after those lay offs to 8 hr shifts 5 days a week. The foreman that called me hated me and the conversation was short. He tells me that he has good news, (good for who?) the company wants to keep me for maybe 6 months. I turned it down. I already had plans and why stay on a sinking ship? So, the company had to go down to the bottom of the seniority list and deny severance packages to those that declined the offer to stay. It did not reach me, but it was close.

The workforce today is totally different then what I grew up on. A job interview was an address followed with we start at 7 am. Never failed one of those interviews.

And it's almost always the next day, after you give your 2 week notice! 🤣

CA is an "at will" state. Means you can quit anytime and be fired at anytime.

No notice has to be given by Either party.

Congratulations on the move. Gotta do what's best for you and your family. 👍🏼

My last place with the level I was at, I had to give 3 month notice, if I resigned.
Company ended up getting acquired and I got 2 years salary, bonus and full benefits in my package :)

Sounds like you had an actual employment contact.

Big different from an "at will" situation.

Congrats on getting canned! 😁

Nope. It was part of the purchase agreement. Based on job level, we had certain packages.
In my current position, I have a golden parachute. Values are different if I get terminated for cause or not.

Lol I did that at my old company and at the end I still helped keep them going for two years til owner just turned his back to everything. Was a case where son got business and ran into the ground. Some are just to lazy to turn luck into a good thing.

Another I know got dropped into his dads business was a solid deal but turned it into a multi million dollar company guy does it all himself with little help always on the phone and traveling though. Some have it and looks like you do as well !

That’s shitty to read they did that to you. Especially after the life long leadership your family provided for those who were given an opportunity to become owners.

Fuck ‘em. Onward and upward. I’d bury them and take their clients if I were you.

I spoke to the construction manager at the one client you and I were talking about the other week. I have an open invitation down there as soon as I'm ready for it.

While that was nice, I had to go find a new job. Not an easy task, when your family does not want to leave Carlsbad, but all the SVP Audit / Compliance positions I was interviewing for, were located outside of San Diego. It has also taken me 20 years to get to a level where those benefits are offered.

Ended up taking a position at another company that was getting acquired in LA (was commuting weekly and living out of a hotel). At that place, I was only going to be offered 6 months salary/benefits when my position was eliminated, but they wanted me to stay for 12 months post close. Said BS to that and resigned and started at the company I am at now (one of the best decisions I have made for myself and my family).

My last job put me on a retention plan. I needed to hang in there for two additional years to get an $80,000 bonus. It actually worked out well for me because the retention plan matured right at my planned retirement date.

Who in Thousand Oaks are you going to work for? New construction or Service? or both? I work for a smaller GC in Thousand Oaks, also looking for another good Mechanical Subcontractor.

Great to hear. I have a lot of respect for your dad and his knowledge. He built that company and brought most of their clients in. You are no dummy either. Keep in touch, my offer stands.

He has 1 day off this week and 2 next week. He wouldn’t be eligible to collect EDD. 😏

I know this was a tough decision for you kevo. However life is a journey, you explored alot of options and you are just on a path, the fork in the road. You chose the right path, even though it was familiar to come back to pmc. All signs were saying no. It takes a bold step when you have a family to provide for to make a major decision like these. Your in good hands and I'm sure your new employer will be over the moon with what you have to offer. Shoot maybe we can even have some time to get together. Congratulations and much love from the Morehart family
