I know on most every cat a standoff box will benefit, but on V bottom's benefitting is not always the case.

What are cases when they work well? Size of boat, weight, HP, step (step design), conventional?

Have heard/read of setups that the standoff box hurt handling and performance.

School me on standoff boxes please!

I'm here to LEARN . What has everyone else found when making that kind of change, did it do what you expected, good an/or bad .

But I also want to KNOW WHY, it worked, didn't didn't do what you expected, and what the boat was all about, before during and after the 'box install' .

Often people would come to me AFTER the box was installed, and they asked me why it didn't work . I had to ask WHY they didn't ask me before all the work and spent cash ............

My first step in 'raising the X dimension' is to see if the whole boat can be safely made to ride higher out of the water . Raise the whole boat 4"-6", and that not only raises the X, but also reduces 'wetted surface' and that means less drag . That magic word, strakes .

I'm not sure that's really an answerable question R2R. A lot of that is case by case types of deals.. In some instances where a boat might have a notched transom you already have a sort of "stand off box" without even knowing it.

That said I'm not an expert on it by any means, but I can probably help fill in some of the basics if you have more specific questions.

You are 100 percent right being case by case. I'm not sure what info to provide exactly. Let's say a twin step vented bottom, neutral boxes, bravo drives with sport lowers. 35 ft.

Horsepower being the same boxes vs no boxes.

Any info or experiences you can share Dave would be great! Thank you!

In any circumstance, adding an extension box (neutral) cat or v-bottom, without raising the propshaft accordingly, will get negative results. As George said, strakes and bottom design are also important. In your 35' boat example, if you already had sportmaster lowers and the x-dim was correct to start with, moving the drive back will probably not gain anything if not hurt performance. If you started with a std lower, and put a box and a shorty lower, you would more than likely see a performance increase. Most transoms are at an angle down so when moving the drive back, it not only lowers the propshaft, the angle of the boat will also be a little bow up which increases the lowering of the propshaft even more. Step bottoms typically use less trim, so extension box placement is different than a conventional straight bottom.

This is a subject that could be covered in about 10 pages of writing to fully understand. Dave is correct that it is a case by case decision.

Brian when a new boat is being rigged with boxes the builder should setup everything accordingly right?

I guess by that I mean it should work in combination with hull and power?

Definitely

On a side note... most, but not every cat likes extension boxes.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post this info. So being rigged from the factory with boxes, I shouldn't have any doubts that it will perform fine?

Your welcome. As long as the mfg has experience with that particular hull with boxes... yes. In my opinion, the Mercury sportmaster lower with a box or ITS, is a really good setup.

So long as it's something they have done before.. If you are the guinea pig, then you are just that.. The guinea pig no telling how that story could end.
