I'm not familiar with gelcoat at all. Don't even know where to get it. I'd like to paint the bilge while my motor is out. Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance:thumbsup

gelcoat! it will need a surfacing agent,or the gel will not fully dry on the surface and will be tacky to the touch.call revchem tell em what you want to do and they will set you up. Roc,the key here is prep.it must be cleaned of all oil,gas residue, dirt, etc, and lots of sanding to give the new gel something to "bite" into.

we occasionally use harware store epoxy enamel with good results Tom,

Since I don't really have the time to wait for a delivery of gelcoat, I may give this a try. Yes, prep prep and prep. Thanks

Yeah, it's almost an insult to a guy like gelcoater for me to consider "painting" it. If I do paint it, it'll be done right and look good though. :thumbsup

Gel coat just isn't that difficult in this application. As stated, just be sure to use degreaser and sand, and you'll get decent results. A quart of white should do the job. Prep, spray the gel, spray on some PVA,come back in 24 hours to wash off the PVA, and call it done. If yo want to block it out, color sand, buff, etc; you can, but you won't need to unless you're really bad with a spray gun :)

an insult?not at all Roc,you have many options here.the epoxy idea would work just as well.this Herculiner stuff while iv never heard of it may work just as well.your main concern should be long term durabilityand resistance to oil,gas and most important high resistance to absorbing water.we all know what a little gas on paint will do if not cleaned off fairly quickly,so any kind of automotive base/clear would not be your best bet.in the end its your boat, you have to deal with what may come. prep will be about the same labor input regardless of what finish you choose to use. happy sanding!:)

I would recommend gel the floor for color, and use a Prestec to finish the floor with a shine, this way you dont have to worry about the tackiness of Gel, and the finish will glass off with the prestec! You can brush, roll or spray both materials if you so desire, use all of the cleaning prep that was stated above, just make sure your gel kicks an hr or so before you decide to apply the clear Prestec, it can also be mixed together and used like a single stage, its catalyzed same as Gel
as with any coatings, DO NOT APPLY IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT, you will most likely create a problem that you dont want to deal with.

I buy all of my product from Sher-fab unlimited 562-921-5206
ask for Ron, they are a smaller shop and I personally like to keep the little guys going! (They sell the prestec products!)
If you order a color from Revchem it will take two-three days for anything other than stock (Primary colors), usually they take the two-three for anything other than white black or clear! but then again, i didnt buy 5 gallon pails so the time for pick up could be different!

i have seen the guys in the shop use a cheep assed wood handle chip brush.the gel will somewhat self level.for a realy bitchen finish you should spray the prestec. what kind of gun do you have? the top feed guns generally require thinning to flo.i have a binks 2001 with a 68 tip and puts out mucho, even flake

I bought some gel from a place down in Temecula called multi-tech - I thought he said it was or was like duratech? maybe? he gave me the gel, mekp, and a gloss additive. He said mix them like a single stage and brush roll or shoot. I have a cheap harborfrieght hvlp gun, a older siphon gun and a nicer hvlp gun. I was going to use the HF gun, so I didnt screw up the nice guns- but I like the idea of not having the cloud of shit in my garage floating around- thanks for the help-

I'd think a 1.4 tip would be too small for gel/prestec mixed. You might be able to shoot the prestec with the 1.4 though. When I started doing the gel on my boat, I went with a 1.7 tip. For gel only it was too small, so I upgraded to a 2.2, and it worked well. Again, you could brush the gel, then spray the prestec, but it would kind of defeat the purpose, You would basically put a shine on whatever texture was left over from rolling in the gel. FWIW, I used an HF HVLP gun to do the bottom on my Spectra, and when shooting the prestec/gel mix, it was almost walkaway good.
