Are there camping spots in between blythe and Yuma or even any hotels? I
assuming the further you go the more shallow it gets. I've been to Blythe and I remember it not being very deep. I just never hear anyone talking about that stretch of river. Is it because there is no boating there?
Please educate me

that woulds be the lower river. Correct me if I'm wrong, but after blythe you have a few spots , then Walter's Camp (Dirt Road, kinda a shithole...) then McIntyre park (Same deal, trailers on etc.) then nothing for a little while (30 mins), then Martinez and Fishers landing (Ehh..) then hidden shores (nice park but lots o' rules)...

It takes about an hour to get from hidden shores (at the dam) to walters camp. If I remember right, its a fair ways up to blythe from walters, and there is a bunch of logs and crap in the water.

Just what I remember, which is fogged by booze right now LOL

It's a good stretch of river for a weekend trip. Most camping is primitive other than walter's and anything in the picacho state rec area which I would definitely recommend. I've done the trek in canoes several times(60 miles or so) but haven't made it down in a boat yet. There is also a really nice camping spot between blythe and mcyntire. Its on the arizona side, easy launch(4wd recommended) large beach, protected place to anchor the boats(except friday mornings) Check out this map Here

McIntyre has a nice campground for those that want to tent camp it.

A buddy and myself are going to take my seadoos and do the trip since I'm not familar with that part of the river what so ever. Going next Monday so it will be empty on the water. I'll take pics along the way and post them if people are interested.

The Palo Verde ( Hippie hole) area is a nice stretch of river to Walters Camp. The area up around Picacho is my favorite part of the river.

When we did the Reverse River Run last October (Fishers to Blythe and back), the Hippie Hole was inaccessible from the water. We beached on the river side and walked in and could not believe ALL the trash and dog crap all over the place. Freekin pigs had been camping there......

Picacho is awesome!

That suck about the hippie hole. Was the water to low to get in or was the enterance grown over. He had some great weekend parties there years ago.

Did that bridge ever get rebuilt after the fire many many years ago ? I think I was there 5 or 6 yrs after the fire and it was still not rebuilt.

The only way to get in there last October would have been with a Kayak. Not sure about the bridge. There were server bridges that we went under on our way up and down to Blythe.

From Walters to Martinez is very primitive. There are a few boat in campsites that have toilets but that's it, you can get to Picacho via road but it is about 15miles of dirt rutted road that I wouldn't tow a bayliner across. Picacho by water is the best, they do have a store and primitive camping. The river around Picacho is awesome, this is where we head just about every time we are on the water, it's a good 30 minute boat ride from Fishers.

I have heard folks say the first time that they visit the lower river that it is the most beautiful stretch of river they have ever been on, I am obviously a little biased but you really can't beat how awesome it is...

BTW, don't listen to OCMerrill, he's skeered to come play where the water is low and the drinks are strong... LOL

Barry,

Store at Picacho??? Did they open a new one? The old one that used to be there was purchased by the Knowltons about 5 years ago and moved over to their camp (the name of which escapes me now) and never reopened..... Just remembered the name..... "Norton's Landing"........

What about gas in the areas from Blythe down? Thats my only concern. Thinking of strapping some 5 gal jugs on the back for safety.

There's gas at the KOA in Blythe, and then at Walters and then at Martinez and Fishers......

Oh yeah, and at Hidden Shores if you get all the way down to the dam...

12 minutes in a fast jet boat with plenty of gas to spare as long as we stay under 4,200. :D

That's because you guys are going to tell me "Your plenty deep over there, go for it".

And then laugh at me, roost me, throw your gang signs, tag my stuff, as it sits high and dry on a sand bar. :D

My OD is still off my boat from my little trip last October to Laughlin. Years ago I ran my V-Drive Laughlin to Needles all the time. No issues.

I made it down no problem this time as well but coming back was bad times.:grumble:

But I'm not owning a "J" word, ever. :D

Haha, we pushed two people off the sandbars last weekend. One guy said he has been going there for years, just bought a new to him Kayot Deckboat, he was in shin deep water. You'll never guess what he gave up for his deckboat???........................................ An Ultra Jet... LOL

I would never point a lower river virgin in the wrong direction their first trip out, but after the first trip when you're all addicted and shit, you're on your own... LOL :D

No, sorry to say. They were super cool, both maybe mid 40's? They were Hidden Shores folks I believe. Yellow Kayot deckboat???

Had to push that heavy ass boat 15 maybe 20 feet before the water was thigh high and it started to float...

All in all, the river karma was flying last weekend... :thumbsup

I don't have any on my computer, maybe Ultrababe will stumble in here and post some up. She is the official Lower River phot-genius... :thumbsup

Ive been out for the last several weekends at my new (to me) place in Ehrenberg (AZ side across from Blythe)

Only went north though so as to feel confident in getting back to camp if there was a problem with the ski. It was pretty neat, really shallow.. There was a sand bar in the middle of the river, probably 50 x 30 yards across. Beached the ski and walked around on it for a bit. I sure as hell would not have run my Nautique down here, though I have seen several I/O boats and a couple of V drives. They must really know that stretch of river..

I have ALOT more scouting to do before I am comfortable. I'll grab some pics this weekend when I go out again. I'll have both skis running by then so I'll feel better about going down stream.
