Barry I am rebuilding a 454. NA about 9.6CR with Promaxx heads. I had the machine shop assemble the rotating assembly.
My question is about block deck surface and head gasket material choices.
I purchased some .040 cometic mls head gaskets and was reading cometics instructions. My block deck is definitely on the rough side. They recommend a 50 RS or smoother surface. The Promaxx surface is nearly like a mirror finish. I was doing some reading about head gasket choices and it seems like a copper head gasket may be the best choice for the two dissimilar surfaces?
I called my machinist about the deck surface and he said to use the Cometics, “we do it all the time”
The information I was reading said the the sealing surface coating can be worn off with abrasive surfaces with thermal expansion and contraction?
Any recommendations on this? Thanks for all the great info you post.
Great question,:)

I would stay away from the solid copper head gaskets if you can. For your type build I would probably go with the correct Fel Pro "Marine" head gaskets that have a stainless core, but if you already have the Cometic they will work. Cometic does not recommend coating their gaskets, but I have found that Gasgacinch goes on real nice and smooth. Use it on both the gasket and metal surfaces.
