A 22 Daytona came up for sale local to me and I’m going to take a look at it this weekend.

Boat info:
22 Daytona
502 Mag MPI
Bravo 1
Roughly 200 hrs
Always stored inside

Seller is the second owner of the boat and has some of the original documentation.

Are there any major problem areas on the 22’s to look out for? Drivetrain is bulletproof from what I’ve heard.

From what I can tell by the pictures, the trailer will need some attention, but otherwise the boat shows very well for its age.

He listed it for $36k
I almost pulled the trigger on one back in 2010ish for 13k, was not that nice but crazy how much they bring now. I think that's a fair price in today's world, so like Chris said- Just do it

My thoughts too. It's inline with the other ones I have seen listed. The others have also been listed for months. Not sure if those people overpaid during covid and don't want to take a loss.

Super fun boats
I had one a few years back
Will run 70 + stock

You will be
surprised how smooth it rides in decent chop

Mine needed more power and another 40 k to make it the way I wanted
So I sold it for around the same price as that beauty

Buy it You will love it !

Dont worry about the hours. Just check maintenance. My old boat a 98 DCB had 200 hours as a second owner as well when I bought it and never had an issue for the couple years I had it. Another member here bought it and hasnt had any issue either, we still keep in touch and their family has enjoyed it! I say go for it!

Fastest I’ve ever been in a boat was a 22 about the same time period with your engine, a centrifugal supercharger, and a Blackhawk Drive.
And on sticky flat Elsinore water.
113 on radar with 3 guys in the boat and minimal fuel.
Dude in the backseat with a laptop dialing in fuel map as we increased throttle.
Felt fine at that speed.
That’s a pretty bullet proof reliable setup you’re looking at. Lots of room to explore speed.

Went and saw the boat today. The top of the deck above the sponsons have a lot of cracking in the gel. They seem to be superficial and age related. Rest of the boat shows as a 170 hour time capsule. Boat wouldn’t fire even with a jump box and a different battery.

Curious what y’all think about the gel issues.

That’s a ton of cracking, was there any mention of it in the ad?

There was not. I was surprised since the rest of the boat was a 8/10

That’s weird I wonder how that happened. I’ve had a couple of old Daytonas, and have never seen any cracks at all on the bow.

I’m probably going to pass on it. Theoretically, could the deck be re-gelled?
Theoretically yes.
Theoretically it would cost you thousands.
Those cracks are a result of 2 things.

All those colors add up to very very thick gelcoat.
In and of itself not horrible.
Unless it gets hammered, wave stuffed, or something to make the boat flex, but the gel won’t flex as much as the glass, (because how thick it is) resulting in what you saw and posted pics of.

It’s not an age thing, the gel is shiny, and looks well cared for considering it’s age.

Damn that's too bad. That entire deck would have to be ground down and re-sprayed. The cost to do that kind of work would be thousands of dollars at the minimum. If the deck is already cracking that badly, it's only a matter of time until the hull itself starts having similar issues. Before you know it, you're redoing the entire boat which makes no sense financially.

Buy it at a premium
Then throw a shit load of money at it
Then sell it for a pennies!
lol like me except I don’t throw alot into things. I just decide to buy at peaks and sell at bottoms.

I wouldn't worry about the small stuff like age cracks tammy fae baker said same thing, motor not starting(who lists a boat that won't start?), you get to roll with an eliminator sticker on back window of your truck, all the other things are small potatoes.

I spoke with a couple fiberglass guys and they said it could be fixed, but it’d be $20k+ and you run the risk of it cracking down the road.

I’m just going to keep looking and waiting for the right boat

At what price point would you guys actually consider getting a boat with gel issues like what that 22 has?

As others have said, that is a gel issue caused by flexing, that boat was run hard. I’d check all the structural wood, seat mounts, motor mounts, etc.

I wonder if it would be cheaper to re-gel the whole boat in a solid color vs trying to replicate the gel on the deck.

I love 22 Daytonas, if you don’t buy it and fix it, I hope someone does.

Figure out how to make more money and get a nicer one. Or buy that and tear it apart like my dumbass did.
I definitely have other options. There’s 4 or so listed on marketplace.

I got a couple quotes and they were $20k plus with the stipulation that it would likely crack again.

Sometimes the cracking can also be in the fiberglass below the gel . If so they have to grind all the fiberglass down till there are no more cracks and reglass it . If not the new gel will definately crack right where the glass cracks are .

There’s a few others for sale that are priced similarly, and based on the photos, are in better shape.

This one is in WA and has a 454 mag, new interior and trailer has been redone.

There’s this one in MI with a 496 HO and has the updated 25 Daytona style deck/dash.

Having restored a few boats....life is short, just buy the boat you want and deserve. Buy once, cry once.

That boat was stuffed really hard...the guys I know that have shops and would deal with the issues would only pay $1500-3500 for it and they have employees on hand to do the work in their downtime.

I think that white one looks clean or kept clean...that trailer looks really nice. The newer deck style is also nice... But I would be happy with either deck. Particularly since they still run the windshield on new 21's and wrap around windshieds on big cats are the current trend; the 22 windshield boats still look modern...
